i love it when you read multiple works from a writer and you start being able to pick out the things that stick with them. like the themes they keep thinking about, that can’t be satisfied with just one poem or novel or story. or the motifs they like to reuse and recycle throughout their works like an extradiagetic thread. it’s like drawing a map through a writer’s collection of all the things that keep them up at night

Now that I think about it, Shinji's comment about falling for Orihime may have had some weight to it. From his time in the Society he didn't seem to harbor any feelings towards anyone, barring an intense annoyance towards Hiyori for flattening his face every chance she got.
And although he's laid back, his emotions do seem to be rather intense, be it his anger towards Ichigo, hatred for Aizen or his annoyance to Hiyori, so it's very possible when his spark happened for Orihime, it sparked heavy.
Plus he never said that about a woman before, not even from his century with Lisa or Mashiro either. So it'd seem kinda big for him to just come out and say it.
