not commenting either way on tom’s hit but i think it’s important to point out that tom didn’t end Ľubomír Višňovský’s career bc spreading misinformation is Bad

just a quick google search shows that yeah he didn’t play again in the nhl after that season BUT it’s because he left the islanders as a free agent that summer and wasn’t signed by the hawks after being given a tryout. he went back and signed a one year deal in the KHL before retiring. so have whatever opinion you want of him but that article is incredibly misleading !!

This is technically correct, but I don’t think it paints a full picture--  Višňovský did sign a one-year contract with Slovan, but he only played nine games with them, and in his retirement announcement he was pretty clear about the fact that he was retiring because he felt that continuing to play would negatively affect his future quality of life. I don’t know if you can say that the hit from Wilson definitively ended his career, but it was absolutely a turning point.

And more generally, I don’t think the fact that a player makes a couple attempts to keep playing means that something wasn’t a career-ending hit in the big-picture sense; sometimes a player really does need to explore all options and experience some real ice time in order to know for sure that their career can’t continue, and I think that’s really what Višňovský’s brief 2015 stint in the KHL was.
