You spend the night with him again cause he seems to love attention and cuddles. And then he crashes. And you’ve not only spent days and nights here fighting with him, for him. You’ve made a note that if he makes it, you’ll adopt him yourself. You see him as a grown up dog, in your house, he’ll be fine. And then he dies. And then you’re there. And you’ve lost someone you care(d) about. You’ve spent days on the floor with him on top of you cause that’s how he liked to eat. You’ve promised him a home. And you’re powerless. Nature is both too powerful and not powerful enough. And while we can try to sway it one way most days. Some days we just lose.

9yo Yorkshire Terrier intact female comes in for bloodwork because - and I cannot stress enough that this was the ONLY complaint - she started whining when she was dreaming in her sleep and the owner wanted to make sure there wasn’t any pathological basis.

Bloodwork comes back with SKY HIGH - and I cannot stress that enough either - kidney values. Complete and severe azotemia. So, she comes in for fluid therapy and ultrasound. We ultrasound a GIGANTIC pus filled uterus.  The dog had been happy, eating, drinking normally, for the last years. Never any sort of complaint except for the whining when she slept.

We took out a 600gr uterus from a 4kg dog. Filled to the brim with chocolate-y pus. WTF. also spay your dogs
