PEDRO PASCAL & SABRINA CARPENTER SNL's 50th Anniversary Episode

RIP Joann, now what?

I wanted to make a post I could copy and paste and or link when I see folks asking where to buy fabrics when Joann is gone. I sew a lot, generally between 100-200 items a year and I don't do it on a big budget. Stores are not in a particular order.

Notions:

Wawak.com - start here, mostly stay here. Wawak is a supplier for professional sewing businesses and have the prices that show it. I will not pay for gutermann Mara 100 anywhere else. I buy buttons, tools, thread, and most elastic here.

Stitch Love Studio - this is where I buy lingerie supplies https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchLoveStudio?ref=yr_purchases

Fabric:

Fabric Mart - this is one where you want to sign up for emails and never buy unless its on sale. They run different sales every day and they rotate. Mostly deadstock fabrics but I buy more from here than anywhere else. Fantastic customer service and if you watch you can get things like $6 wool suiting or $4 cotton jersey. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/

Fabrics-Store - again, buy the sales not the full price. Sign up for the emails but redirect them to a folder because it is TOO MANY. They stock linen or good but not amazing quality. https://www.fabrics-store.com/

Purple Seamstress - This is where I buy my solid cotton lycra jersey. They have other things, but the jersey is what I'm here for. Inexpensive and very good quality. If you ask she will mail you a swatch card for the solids. https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/

LA Finch - deadstock fabrics with a fantastic remnant selection https://lafinchfabrics.myshopify.com/

Califabrics - mix of deadstock and big brands, easy to navigate and always seem to have good denim in stock. https://califabrics.com/

Boho Fabrics - good variety, nice bundles. I have also gotten some really great trims from here. https://www.bohofabrics.com/

Firecracker Fabrics - garment and quilting fabrics, really nice selection and great sale section. I've bought $5 yard quilting cottons here several times. https://www.firecrackerfabrics.com/

Hancock's of Paducah - Quilting fabric and some limited garment fabric. AMAZING sale section. Do not sleep on the sale section. This is my first stop when buying quilting fabrics. Usually the last stop too. Not particularly speedy shipping. https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/

Itokri - This is something a little different. Itokri is an Indian business with incredible traditional fabrics. Shipping to the US is expensive, but the fabric is so inexpensive it evens out. I generally end up paying like $30 for shipping. Beautiful ikat and block prints. https://itokri.com/

Miss Matatabi - this is a little treat. This isn't where you go to save money, but there are so many beautiful things in this shop. Ships from Japan incredibly quickly. https://shop.missmatatabi.com/

Lucky Deluxe - Craft thrift store, always has an incredible selection and fantastic customer service. I need to close the tab fast because I never go to this website without finding something I need. https://www.luckydeluxefabrics.com/

Swanson's - the OG of online craft thrift stores, but I find their website harder to navigate. https://www.swansonsfabrics.com

Honorary Mentions: I haven't shopped at these places yet but I have had them recommended and likely will at some point.

A Thrifty Notion - https://athriftynotion.com/

Creative Closeouts - https://creativecloseoutsfabric.com/ being rebranded to sewsnip.com on March 1 - quilting deadstock

Hawthorne Supply Co. - I just got this rec and I think I need to not look too closely or I'm going to slip with my debit card. https://www.hawthornesupplyco.com/

This is not an exhaustive list of everywhere you can buy fabric, or even a full list of where I shop. There are SO many options out there in the world. You also need to think outside the fabric store box. I thrift men's shirt fabrics for quilts and sheets for backing fabric. I don't do a ton of in person thrifting and my local stores don't get a lot of craft materials but every thrift store is its own universe and reflects the community it is in. Go out and find something cool.

Oh and final note: Don't shop at Hobby Lobby.

been stewing on an analytical approach to fiction which I call "is this book afraid of me?" and in order to answer this question you determine how hard the book is trying to make sure you don't come after the writer on twitter

Please keep making art. Please make it for yourself. Please don’t let everything become even more of the same flat general appeal nonsense that doesn’t seem to have anything to say

If you want an author who doesn't pull any punches, you need to read Chuck Tingle and I'm so serious

He's not the "haha funny sex meme" guy, he's an incredibly talented writer who does hold back at all

Go read his horror novella "Straight", where once a year, straight people turn into violent zombies with the only goal of killing as many queer people as possible. And if you think this is a heavy-handed metaphor? Nah, he doesn't do metaphors. The actual message is explained in the text multiple times

Read "Camp Damascus", about Rose, a victim of her religious parents and a conversion camp, who starts fighting back against it whole losing her faith in the process

Read "Bury Your Gays", about Misha, a gay screenwriter who is tasked with killing off his beloved lesbian characters, and refusing, leading him to uncover the biggest conspiracy in the industry and having to face his own anxieties about coming out (Misha will sound familiar when he's described, and that's on purpose)

In conclusion: if you're sick and tired of this sanitized "don't be mad at me" shit, read Chuck Tingle, a queer neurodivergent author

Adapt. Evolve. Become.: The Genderqueer Fandom of NBC's Hannibal - SECOND EDITION!

In 2023 we released a fan-led volume of fanworks by and about trans non-binary, genderqueer and otherwise non-cis Fannibals. Now we're back by popular demand, to create a second edition and YOU can be involved!

We've extended submissions! You can now submit until February 28th 2025!

We'd especially love to see more:

  • Essays
  • non-fiction
  • personal pieces
  • memes
  • cosplay
  • fanart

We're still open to fanfic but as we have quite a lot on that front, we'd love to see other types of submissions.

NBC's Hannibal has resonated with many queer fans, and we know that being in the Hannibal, Hannigram and Hannibal Extended Universe fandom, and the support of Fannibals, has been part of many people's gender identity journeys. We want to capture that in a fandom led volume of non-fiction, featuring essays, creative nonfiction, personal accounts and art.

IF YOU WISH TO SUBMIT WE URGE YOU TO READ THE EXISTING EDITION FIRST! You can read or download free here!

WHO should submit: Please ONLY SUBMIT IF:

  • you are aged 18 or over. For the sake of legalities, we are only accepting submissions from those legally considered adults in the region of publication - UK.
  • you are transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.
  • OR you have a close relationship (sibling, partner etc) with someone who is transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.

NB: The reason for the edition of cis creators is as a result of the feedback on the first edition regarding how much it spoke to people who had trans relatives or a trans partner and how it resonated with them and their (often) non-fandom partner/relative. We wanted to give them a chance to voice the impact of the show and fandom on their lives as people with close relationships with trans people.

WHAT submissions do we want:

  • Fanfiction (100 to 5000 words)
  • Fanart (including comics)
  • Personal piece / statement / testimony (pref. under 3000 words)
  • Creative non-fiction (up to 5000 words)
  • Essay (up to 5000 words)
  • Cosplay (photos of yourself in cosplay and/or instructions/tips on how to make trans friendly cosplay)
  • Other (any form of art, photography or writing not covered here including crafts, memes, playlists???)

Theme:  Via one of the above mediums, we want you to share with us in as much or little detail as you’d like, your journey as a non-cis Fannibal in the Hannibal fandom, and/or the impact NBCs Hannibal has had on your gender journey.

A few points for consideration you may wish to explore:

  • Has the show and/or being part of the fandom helped you explore your gender, or made you feel more confident in expressing it - even if only online.
  • Has the fandom helped you with your transition and/or medical needs, such as donating for trans-clothing or surgeries?
  • Do you want to write an essay exploring the connection between NBCs Hannibal and non-cis fans? Or explore the trans-coding of Francis Dolarhyde?
  • Do you want to submit fic or art of Hannibal, Will or another character that expresses how you feel about your own gender identity?

PLEASE NOTE: if your submission is successful you are welcome to use your real name or an online handle for authorship, but you will have the option to publish anonymously or under a pseudonym if you would prefer.

YOU CAN submit multiple works. We may publish up to two pieces from each person if they are different types, e.g. one fanart AND one essay.

Timeline:

  • Submission period: ENDS 28 February 2025
  • Editing: March 2025
  • Final edited copies for proof by 31st May 2025
  • Publication: July 2025

Compensation: As a fan-led project we do not have any funding and so cannot offer monetary compensation. All contributors will receive at the least an e-copy of the collection. If we are able to establish funding (potentially via Kickstarter) we may be able to send each contributor a print copy, but will not be able to confirm until further in the process and cannot guarantee this.

If funding is not available, we will be able to offer contributors reduced cost print copies by charging only cost price. However, given the quality of the art printing of the print copies, this will still be a significant cost.

Content Restrictions:

  • Contributors must be transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis, OR in a close relationship with someone who is transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.
  • Contributions must relate to NBCs Hannibal, HEU and/or the fandom
  • The contribution must be original. Previously published works may be considered, such as existing fanfic and fanart.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO GENERATIVE AI.
  • Explicit works welcome, but please give details in the sign up form, especially for any visual media.
  • It should go without saying, but we will not accept bigotry and hate speech: We may consider works that feature these things but do not glorify them. For example, we will consider works that discuss transphobia but not works that are transphobic.

FAQ under the cut!

Want to be involved but you're not a writer or artist?

Submit anything that reflects the impact of Hannibal or the fandom on your gender journey e.g.:

  • cosplay
  • crafts
  • photography
  • memes
  • tattoos
  • edits
  • Even screenshots of social media posts you've made that you feel are poignant

We really want to capture a snapshot of the trans / nonbinary / genderqueer Fannibal community.

Here are a couple of examples of things we'll be including:

Not a fic writer but have something to say? We also welcome personal pieces, testimonials or even creative non-fiction about how Hannibal and/or the fandom has intersected with your gender journey.

And remember! You can submit fanfic and fanart that has already been published on AO3 / social media. It doesn't have to be a new piece, it can be one that you posted years ago, or yesterday - as long as it fits the remit.

Two weeks left to submit!

Tagging a few more folk who may be eligible to submit and might be interested!

(apologies to anyone we've tagged that have already submitted, been tagged elsewhere, aren't interested or this doesn't apply to 💖)

Hannibal (2013-2015)

One of the crew members said it took six people holding the door up on the other side to keep Mads from breaking it down
