Hi Ashaya, I've been an admirer of your gifs for a while now and I've finally worked up the courage to ask if you could do a tutorial on coloring (mainly background). I'm an amateur at coloring gifs and i would really appreciate your help! :)

Thank you so much @spookyskatic! It’s my pleasure, so here is my attempt to show how I make my colorporn gifsets (examples under this tag). This tutorial is aimed at people who know the basics of giffing using Photoshop already. This is a little long, but I’ve included images throughout, an Imgur album in case the images are hard to read, and the actual PSD (dl link). Here is the before/after for the gif, from my Legion gifset (x):

First of all, I don’t always use layer masks, but I usually choose scenes assuming I might need to use one to get the effect I want, and so I pick scenes without a ton of movement. Sometimes I know I want to make something a certain color when I start, sometimes I don’t decide until the end. With this gif, I knew that any color other than yellow would look super unnatural, as I did not want Syd to have color significantly different than her hair color in the show. So we are aiming for yellow background and hair, but not a yellow Syd!

Yeah, my pleasure, but it’s a pretty rough coloring where I ended up using a bunch of color masks to do the red, so some of it might not be very useful to you. I put those layers into a group for easy toggling off, though!
