I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.

It also almost always comes down to poor research.

Rather than research the ways subversive women really acted, what they really said, what they actually cared about, the very specific ways in which women used to be treated, dismissed, infantilised etc, we get books and TV shows in which modern words, modern concerns and modern ways of being “a strong woman” are awkwardly squeezed into eras in which they make no sense.

It’s a disservice to the real feminists of that time, to the real women who lived and survived in a system of continuous misogynistic oppression, and the real journey we have travelled to get to where we are, and the long long way we still have to go. Worse, it feeds into the ignorance that breeds that complacency which then leads to a lot of the gains we have made being taken away from us.

So I go to the dentist and the appointment I had was not the appointment that I thought I was going to have (normal maintenance vs deep clean) so i warned the dentist "hey heads up I burn through dental anesthetics super quick and also I'd like to use as little as possible because putting the dental anesthetics in my body is the most painful part of the process unless I'm having a root canal or something" and she's like "Hmm. Okay. Is it just the injection site?" and I was like "no, it will feel like burning on the opposite side of my face and in my nose and eyes and stuff." And she was like "Hmm. Do you turn really red when this happens?" And I was like "I don't know, I can't really see myself when it happens." And she was like "are you willing to experiment with this a little?" And I was like "sure, no worries" and she injected me with one anesthetic and it hurt like a motherfucker and she and the assistant both went "OOOH" and she was like "Yeah you got really red right away let's try the other," and it was the same thing and then she was like "okay I think this is the one that will work" and it hurt a little bit but it was fucking NOTHING compared to the comprehensive full stabbing burning facial pain from the others and long story short the dentist was like "You're reacting to the epinephrine in these other anesthetics," which I guess is fairly common for people who have autoimmune disorders.

So I guess this is to say: If you get spreading, burning, stabbing pain when you are being injected with local anesthetics it's not supposed to do that and you should say something.

I sent a letter today - something I haven’t done for years

It’s full of plastic bread clips

It’s for Science

At the risk of loosing some mystery, I think I should add some context:

There’s this website-I mean, scientific organization called the Holotypic Occlupanid Reasurch Group.

They are a group of abiologists who study and classify Bread clips.

I found a species that has not yet been described:

Yay for citizen science 👍

wtf?

Apparently HORG is widely appreciated by pediatricians since knowing exactly what kind of Occlupanid a child may have swallowed makes removing it safely much easier

IIRC this is actually part of the reason HORG was started. A man swallowed a breadclip and the clip closed around part of his tissue linings (in his intestines I think?). The specific shape and flexibility of the clip were significant determining factors in the removal process, as some bread clips have spikes and prongs that would have made extraction more complicated. They started the taxonomy so they could work out extraction techniques for each type.

a few reminders because i’m tired and angry

  • fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism
  • adult women aren’t inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes
  • the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships aren’t incest supporters or pedophiles, actually
  • liking a m/f ship doesn’t make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space
  • preferring gay ships doesn’t make you ‘’woke’’ and good
  • no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villain’s actions are evil and that they don’t condone those actions irl
  • liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and you’re a fucking idiot if you believe that
  • just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesn’t mean she’s promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women can’t tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogyny
  • some rando’s a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have
  • no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems
  • abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships
  • y’all need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that don’t actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people
  • fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

feel free to add more

hey fellow strugglers, i wanted to share a low cost mexican bean recipe (frijoles charros) with you. it makes a lot and freezes really well. it's gotten me through some rough financial times and i hope it can do the same for others. it looks complicated but i promise it really isn't. to make it simpler, my coworkers have had success making these in a slow cooker and pressure cooker but i've never tried it myself and usually just do stovetop.

4 cups dry pinto beans

2 to 6 garlic cloves

1 yellow onion

1-4 whole jalapeños or serranos (for flavor; beans aren't meant to be spicy)

1 ham hock (or other ham bone)

sugar

salt & pepper

epazote (optional)

cilantro (optional)

1. rinse and sort beans

2. add beans to stock pot and cover with water. optional: soak overnight first (see note)

3. smash garlic cloves and very roughly chop the onion. keep peppers whole but cut a couple of slits along the sides. add these to pot with sugar and ham bone. you can add fresh tomato here too if you want. bring to a boil, then lower heat to medium low

4. simmer on medium low 2-3 hrs, covered but with lid vented. i usually watch tv or clean while it's cooking and stir every once in a while. add water when needed. add salt halfway through. be cautious with the salt because the beans can soak up a lot. you will salt to taste at the end.

5. check beans. they should be soft and silky, falling apart a little. the water should be stew like, not like refried beans, but thickened from the bean insides. personally i like to mash with a potato masher a couple of times to make the water more gravy-like.

6. remove ham bone and salt and pepper to taste.

8. add epazote for the last few minutes of cooking if using.

7. serve topped with cilantro. goes well with rice or some jiffy cornbread.

8. freeze extras up to a couple of months

note: i highly recommend soaking beans beforehand. this gets rid of some of the oligosaccharides that cause gas and bloating. bring beans to a boil, removd from heat, and then let soak overnight or throughout the day. drain and rinse again, then follow recipe from there.

note: adding epazote for the last few minutes of cooking also helps with gas. but it can taste licorice-y, so if you hate anise don't use it.

note: you can add diced fresh tomato with the other veggies if you want. it's popular to add goodies like fried crispy bacon, chicharrones, or chorizo at the end, too, including some of the cooked off fat. you could add more seasoning too, like cumin or ancho, but my family traditonally makes our beans simple and tomato-free
