Paul at 80:

Paul McCartney, thank you so much for everything you have given to me. You are my favorite Beatle, and favorite artist of all time. Thank you for making music that helps me when I’m sad, or makes me want to dance. You have changed the lives of mine and many other fans. Have the happiest of birthdays Paul and I hope there will be many more to come. Love you!

Paul performing Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally’ in 1963 and 2014.

Long Tall Sally was the song the Beatles closed their last public concert with at Candlestick Park, in 1966, and it was also one of the final songs to be played by Paul at the stadium’s last scheduled event, before its demolition in 2014.

ROLLING STONE: How do you think the Beatles did with [covering Long Tall Sally]? RICHARD: Fantastic. I think the Beatles did one of the best versions of “Long Tall Sally” I’ve ever heard. RS: You toured with them in England before they broke over here, didn’t you? […] Did you see potential in them? RICHARD: I saw it in Paul McCartney. Paul was the one who was so crazy about me. Paul and George. I believe they had it – they were gifted.
PAUL: From ‘Tutti Frutti’ to 'Long Tall Sally’ to 'Good Golly, Miss Molly’ to 'Lucille’, Little Richard came screaming into my life when I was a teenager. I owe a lot of what I do to Little Richard and his style; and he knew it. He would say, “I taught Paul everything he knows”. I had to admit he was right. In the early days of The Beatles we played with Richard in Hamburg and got to know him. He would let us hang out in his dressing room and we were witness to his pre-show rituals, with his head under a towel over a bowl of steaming hot water he would suddenly lift his head up to the mirror and say, “I can’t help it cos I’m so beautiful”. And he was. A great man with a lovely sense of humour and someone who will be missed by the rock and roll community and many more. I thank him for all he taught me and the kindness he showed by letting me be his friend. Goodbye Richard and a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop.
RICHARD: Paul was the closest to me. Paul was like my blood brother. I believe if I was hungry Paul would feed me. We’re that tight. Paul is a humanitarian.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL MCCARTNEY! ↬  June 18th, 1942, Liverpool

It’s a mystery how all this happened. People stop me in the street, and they can get very emotional. They say, ‘Your music changed my life,’ and I know what they mean – that The Beatles brought something very important to their lives. But it’s still a mystery, and I don’t mind ending up being a mystery.
