y’all ever think about how Katara and Aang are both genocide survivors and how they both are the ones who bring an end to the war by defeating Azula and Ozai because I do

like how Azula comes from around that pillar and she’s talking about how Katara is a “peasant” and how Katara is going to die because Azula obviously views her race and her culture as inferior to the Fire Nation paralleled to Aang hiding from Ozai who says “You’re weak, just like the rest of your people. They did not deserve to exist in this world, in my world.”

I’m thinking about them. OTP 🏃🏻‍♂️

Not to hijack your post OP but can we talk about how when Katara decided not to kill Yon Rah her decision is generally viewed as powerful and the right choice, or at least a choice ppl can empathize with, but when Aang decided not to kill Ozai it was viewed as pathetic and weak?

Katara and Aang are both victims of genocide, and a lot of people tend to forget that for Aang the genocide of the airbenders is just as recent as the genocide of the waterbenders is for Katara. Aang's pain and anger is often diminished because for the other characters the airbender genocide was ancient history, but he only just found out. And while Aang is not in direct contact with the man who enacted said genocide, he is in contact with his offspring, with a man who symbolizes this violence and supremacy. Deciding to take away what Ozai thinks makes him superior, and not to end his life, deciding to end the cycle of violence and hatred, it's probably the bravest and most powerful thing Aang has done in the show.

And by doing this, Aang honors his culture, his pacifist upbringing. He chooses to conform to the peaceful ways of his people, with a man that doesn't deserve it. It's essentially a giant middle finger towards the fire nation and everything they stand for. It's showing how their attempt to eradicate the airnomads didn't work. Because here is Aang, a descendant of the airnomads, prepared to bring his culture back to life, and the first step to doing this is to show the firelord of all people mercy.
