I had the opportunity of designing a book cover last year for Inciting Incidents, and it wasn't until I got the hard copy in the mail and read through it that I realized just how remarkably similar my story is with, contributing author and friend, Blaine Hogan's. I've known Blaine for a few years and have worked with him on a number of occasions, but this past September we sat together over lunch reveling in the similarities of our stories.

An Evening With Tycho

I remember years ago a friend of mine introduced me to the artwork of ISO50 (Scott Hansen), and I remember wondering how anyone could be as expressive and as resonant with my being as this dude was with his artwork. Then I discovered that Scott also made music under the name Tycho. After years of never being available when Scott would play shows in Austin, I was finally able to get the chance to see him in Houston during his tour with The Album Leaf. Here are a few of those photographs:

I was spotlighted by my friends, Visual Supply Co, yesterday here. I decided to dig up one of my favorite photos and reedit it with their Film 02 Pack. Initially, I hesitated grabbing it because it didn't seem to me as strong as its predecessor, but after working with it a while, I've discovered that it really stands on its own. We're All In This Together (A House Show)

Some buddies of mine used to live in a home named Carry Me Home after the title of their second album. From the first time I visited their place, I knew it'd be a great place for a house show. The problem was that it wasn't my place to host said house show, and I wasn't about to conjure up some crazy event(s) at someone else's place. That was until February…

In late February, I got a message from my buddy, Andy Zipf, saying he was looking to play a house show in Houston a few weeks away on his way home from SXSW. After tossing the idea to Neil Sandoz (who lived at Carry Me Home), we decided the timing was right and that we had to do a house show. Since the house was Neil's and he played in Gatlin Elms, it was only fitting to get Gatlin Elms to open up for Andy. Two artists down, we wanted someone else on the bill to really bring the night to a close — Aaron Hale. Between Andy's unique way of involving his audience no matter the size, to Gatlin Elms' way of captivating an audience through lush soundscape, to Aaron's lighthearted nature, we knew it was going to be a fun night.

There was one thing that Andy kept saying leading up to the show: he wanted folks to make sure they brought their cell phones for a surprise. Little did we know that he'd actually use the crowd's cellphones as musical instruments during his set. Halfway through his set, he unplugged, stepped off stage, had folks take out their phones and load up a series of pre-recorded tones that they could select at random, and then proceeded to play to the accompaniment of the phones. After the first song of the unplugged set, Andy proceeded to lead folks on a journey from the stage to the garage where he lit candles and had everyone do the same. Lastly, Andy concluded his set by having everyone follow him yet again to another outdoor area just under a huge flood light. The kind of interaction and engagement Andy was able to give was astounding, and I know my words fail to describe. This is why I took photos.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out that night. A very special thanks to the Sandozes and the dudes at Carry Me Home for providing everything that made this event something great. And many thanks to Andy for trusting us to provide a warm environment for his music.
