Probably going to be seeing a variety of styles and genre’s this year on my end as I push ahead. I will be back to painting this year

"Turning" 10" by 8" brush and Ink wash on Fabriano acquarello watercolour paper. 20 minute pose with the model Jasmine The dA Center for the Arts in Pomona Cal. When Jasmine took the pose I immediately loved the way the light was falling on the shoulder and the face going into the dark but still being readable. No prelim just went straight to the face and laid it in while keeping everything else just the white of the paper with the black of the line. By this point I knew I wanted a solemn feeling to it but as with the previous one I posted, having currents of thought and emotion underneath. I came back into the back and put a heavy wash of water on the back and then dropped ink into it and watched it spread out on its own accord. This was a tad nerve wracking as I had no control over it. Did this a couple of more times on the back and the same above the head. When I looked at it I thought I had ruined it for sure. I just kept working the lines here, wash's there. It was not until I came back and defined the lines on the body and added the splatter that it all came together. Trying to find that play between energy and solid drawing that works for me sometimes means that it looks like I failed until almost the end.

MomsDay. 10" by 5" Watercolor and gouache on Cottonwood Arts illustration sketchbook. Not sure of the time I spent on this but probably around 30 minutes. This was done at Laguna Beach California. This was the last day before my mother went in for surgery to remove cancer from her lung, which she came through great. My sister and I took her out for multiple all day events and went to places we use to go with her. The thing is, my sister and I are 20 years apart in age, with her be younger. We had gone to these place with her separately but never all together so we had different memories of these places. In fact past my sister first couple of years I do not think the three of us were together that often other than holidays and when my wife and I would pick up or drop off my sister when she would stay with us. For me nothing will solidify a moment in my memory better than painting or drawing the place I am at. Looking at this I am taken back and I can feel the sand beneath my feet, the cool air blowing on me and the sounds of the people all around. More Homework for Online Drawing Workshop by Steve Ahn This was for the Fourth week. Full skeletons, Muscles and a character. Ended up doing DareDevil just because I was rewatching the first season. Also studies of hands and feet. All done in a clean line style which for me is HHHHHHHAAAARRRDD. No rendering just lines and shapes. The hands and feet were kind of fun for me to just focus on in there. The turns arounds were a different story. I got lock into a set pose with the skeleton and everything had to follow from there so be the time I came to DD I was hating that pose for a figure, since it is just a dead pose. But was damn good at getting me to focus. In just the couple of weeks since then I think I would do a much better job on DD now, the rest I am happy with. I think it is great to be pushed, at least when you are ready for it

This was the final 20 minute pose for the day and while I was not overwhelmed by the pose I really liked the light on the face and decided to just focus on that. Do not do that many drawings that are just of the face anymore. Miss doing them. Unhappy with how I draw figures from my imagination. Decided to take Online Drawing Workshop by Steve Ahn to reinforce some of the things I already know and to get my butt kick in the others I am not as good as I want them to be. Anatomy I feel comfortable with but drawing in a clean line way and from my imagination is not something I am as good as I want. Part of the reason I started doing my figure drawing when I go to a workshop in just Ink and line is to make myself get better at drawing with just line instead of form and value which is more my natural way of drawing. Here is some of the homework of drawing skulls and the skeleton. The skulls were first and I got lost in having fun drawing them so on the skeleton I just kept my lines super clean

Sketchbook page from back in October. Quick studies while out and about with the family. They shopped and I drew. Pentel brush pen on Cottonwood Arts 8" by 5" recycled sketch book. Love these sketchbooks. These were done out in Claremont CA during a family get together so did not really have time to really make sure these were super accurate but just draw super quick. The main building was done in about 10 minutes. The small building study is from the Claremont colleges and then the flower was from there as well since time was limited just focused on the blacking the plant except for the lower flower to pop it out.

20 min study at the The dA Center for the Arts from a couple of saturdays ago. Roughly 8" by 5" on Strathmore Artist Papers 400 plate paper. This one was work and luck. Was focused on nailing the angle of the head so that took up most of my time. The model had a robe on the chair (because why would you not if you were a model sitting on a strange chair) but the time had ended and she got up and took her robe with her. So I just stayed where I was and drew in the chair and started liking how it created the contrast between the model and the chair. It seemed to give her a more contemplated feel and the chair patterns more of an emotional feel to them. At least that was what I was playing with in my mind while I was putting the pattern in and why I did not go more detailed or more fully rendered with the pattern on the chair.
