He was done with politics and intrigue. He loved her, and no empire, no king, and no earthly fear would keep him from her. No, if they tried to take her from him, he’d rip the world apart with his bare hands. And for some reason, that didn’t terrify him.

Dorian fought like hell against the guards now pinning his arms, trying to drag up any ounce of power as his father brought the collar of Wyrdstone toward his neck.      No—no.      He was screaming it—screaming it because he’d seen that creature in the catacombs, and heard what was being done to Roland and Kaltain. He had seen what a mere ring could do. This was   a n   e n t i r e   c o l l a r ,   with no visible keyhole …      The breath was sucked from his chest, and his ribs groaned in agony, but there was nothing Dorian could do to stop it.

“Is there something the matter?” she asked. Cautiously; curiously. As if she cared.     “You must hate me,” he murmured. “Hate me and my court for our frivolity and mindlessness when so many horrible things are going onoutside of this city. I heard about those butchered rebels, and I—I’m ashamed,” he said, leaning his head against the window. “I undestand  why you have such ease when killing my kind. And I don’t blame you for it.”      “Dorian,” she said gently.      “You won’t believe me. But … I don’t want to be a part of that. I can’t call myself a man when I allow my father to encourage such unforgivable atrocities. Yet even if I pleaded for clemency on behalf of the conquered kingdoms, he wouldn’t listen. Not in this world. This is the world where I only picked you to be my Champion because I knew it would annoy my father. But if I had refused to sponsor a Champion, my father would have seen it as a sign of dissent, and I’m not yet enough of a man to stand against him like that. So I chose Adarlan’s Assassin to be my Champion, because the choice of my Champion was the only choice I had.”      Yes, it was all clear now. “Life shouldn’t be like this,” he said, their eyes meeting as he gestured at the room. “And … and the world shouldn’t be like this.”      The assassin was silent, listening to the throbbing of her heart before she spoke. “I don’t hate you,” she said in little more than a whisper. He seemed remarkably lonely. “And I don’t think you’re like them. I’m—I’m sorry if I’ve hurt you. I’m joking most of the time.”

Happy Birthday, Demi

“One sign, Dorian,” she said. “Just give me one sign that you’re in there.” The Valg prince laughed low and harsh, that beautiful face twisted with ancient brutality. His sapphire eyes were empty as he said, “I am going to destroy everything you love.”

He held out his hand, inclining his head. ‘Dance with me?’. Was there music playing? She’d forgotten. The world had shrunk into nothing, dissolved by the golden glow of candles. But there were her feet, and here was her arm, and her neck, and her mouth. She smiled and took his hand, still keeping one eye on the ball around them. He was lost - lost in a world of which he’d always dreamed. Her body was warm beneath his hand, and her fingers were soft around his. He spun her and led her about the floor, waltzing as smoothly as he could. She didn’t falter a single step, nor did she seem to care about many angry female faces that watched as dance after dance passed and they didn’t switch partners.

biblio club challenge: a song/lyric that you can relate to an otp or friendship → long live and doraelin  [insp]

I said remember this moment in the back of my mind The time we stood with our shaking hands The crowds in stands went wild We were the Kings and the Queens And they read off our names The night you danced like you knew our lives Would never be the same You held your head like a hero On a history book page It was the end of a decade But the start of an age

that thing called fate

(aka why doraelin is totally endgame)

once is chance; the first time they meet is at her home. she is fireheart and he is the son of a king who scares her. she has a flame burning in her veins and he seems fragile and what if she breaks him? but he looks nice and most of all he looks lonely and so she asks him to be her friend. he says he already has one and she lets it go. and then things happen, terrible things, and she doesn’t have the time to think about what could’ve been.

twice is coincidence; the second time it’s at a party. he’s masked and so is she. but hers is a different kind of mask, one made of flesh and bones that are not her own. she’s no one and he’s no one, too. and she could be anyone and he could be anyone, too. and time is against them and slips away, but for a while the music belongs only to them, and they belong only to each other. and then they’re gone different ways, to be shaped into different people.

third time is a pattern; when they meet again is at place she hates and dreams to leave every day. a place so cold even the sun is frozen, those rare times she sees it. and it’s like they have never met before, but they have. she is adarlan’s greatest assassin, and he’s adarlan’s crown prince. and his eyes are the color of that ice she hates but she can’t hate them because they shine like that sun she so longs for. and he gives her a chance and she takes it, because what else can she do? and so they’re under the same glass roof for a while, until they’re not. she leaves and this time he’s the one who has to let her go and it hurts but he believes her when she says that she’ll come back for him.

and she does.

fourth time is fate;  the last time they meet for the first time it’s his home they’re in, or hell, or somewhere in between, at the end of the world. and glass is shattering and flames are battling ice. and light is shining through the darkness. a door opens somewhere and finally she is aelin again and he is dorian again. and they’re not scared and they’re not running and nothing can defeat them because now they’re together and that makes them more powerful than the gods that have long abandoned their world. she’s a queen and he’s a king and they will win the war and bring the peace their land needs and rule it with justice. and stories will be told of them until the end of time.
