PSA: bot comments are taking over ao3

The above examples have been provided with the authors' permission to demonstrate what these look like.

Basic rundown:

  • They are all 3 sentences long
  • Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
  • Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
  • No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
  • The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post

Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly

There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

I am curious, bc I just ran across one of those, 'everyone remembers where they were when 9/11 happened!' things so-

This isn't meant to be a commentary on the event, just whether or not you remember where you were/what you were doing when the news hit.

As an example, I was home sick, doing dishes, when mom yelled for me to get in the living room RIGHT NOW.

[Video description: Brennan Lee Mulligan, outside on the concrete, speaking into a microphone, surrounded by people and picket signs. Caption: Brennan Lee Mulligan DMing on the universal picket line.

"-if I told you this was not the first time I've played D&D on curb next to a parking lot!

Long you have journeyed through the mythic realms, through forests deep, caverns old, to arrive at the Valley of the Sun! (people laugh) LOL, big LOL. |It is in the dead of night, dawn has not yet come, and from an ancient sarcophagus lines with runes, you see rising from the mist, the vampiric form of John Strahd! (people laugh) CEO of Ravenloft Studios. (people boo)

He arises, (gasps), and you see behind him the vast collected treasures, artifacts, and magical items, all taken from the fine hands of your fellow wizards, bards, artificers. A massive horn like that of an ancient dragon!

He stands, "Ahh, adventurers brave. Defeating you will be a cruel, but necessary evil!" (everyone boos)

see i think what people get caught up in is going "oh this and that are fetish art......hey did you know x thing is a fetish...pretty crazy right.....this piece of art is actually a fetish for the artist........" and like. see the problem is thinking that devalues the art. i don't think something being a fetish or sexual in nature or whatever actually detracts from any meaning or emotional weight something could have. i don't think "horny" is a worthless or meaningless emotion and i don't see why exploring it in art is any different from "sadness" or "happiness" or "anger". does that make sense? im just sayin we should examine why we view sexuality as inherently detracting/meaning less in art than other things
