oh so when the final boss‘s phase transitions, gamers love it, but when I, a trans woman,
I support every trans woman's right to have their health bar dramatically refill accompanied by flashy VFX and the name above the hp bar changing.

Me, crying, broken: the suckers can leave hickies also they taste with their suckers 😭😭😭😭
I - look, I'm not generally into tentacles so much in a sexy way because I associate them with octopi, which are about as sexy as a puppy or a chicken to me, but like, as animal interactions go, I wouldn't describe holding an octopus as "gross and weird." It beats getting licked in the face by a dog. I guess they're not as much fun to pet as a cat or a snake or a sea hare? But normally people don't, like, pick up an octopus and go "ew" unless they already found the concept of octopi to be scary or gross.
in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.
for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.
so how can you help?
and finally…
cannot stress enough that donating to the internet archive to help them appeal this without going broke is the most important thing you can do right now. my day job revolves around fulfilling digital article and book scan requests at an academic library and a huge part of that is borrowing from other libraries that do controlled digital lending (incl. the internet archive!). copyright law is already hugely restrictive on what we can and can't lend, and we absolutely don't have the option to pirate anything for our patrons due to being a large academic institution. it's difficult to overstate just how bad this ruling could end up being for libraries that have digital lending programs, esp ones that rely on CDR for old/archival/hard-to-find texts.
I'm incredibly fucking disappointed at the bootlickers in the comments claiming that the IA steals from small creators. Eliminating a valuable research, academic and cultural resource because you've bought into the fiction that "potential sales" are lost sales is exactly what these big corporations want. You aren't saving small creators by swatting down a non-profit, you're allowing ginormous publishing monopolies to consolidate even further while they smile a snake's smile over independent creators.
The Internet Archive is absolutely vital for my work and research. Without it, a good chunk of Welsh LGBTQ+ history would be inaccessible. The Welsh books hosted on IA are indexed and searchable, meaning any Welsh LGBTQ+ terminology can be searched for. Otherwise, me sitting down to read every. single. Welsh book ever published *just in case* it contains one of the terms in my data is an impossible task (Welsh books have been published since 1546) . In fact, this is something I refer to in my methodology for this very reason.
I'm also broke as hell rn but when I get the chance I'm gonna donate. Without IA, you can kiss goodbye to a *massive* chunk of academia. My lecturers use IA. So not just like, undergrads and PhD students, but seasoned academics will lose access to a major resource if IA stopped existing.
The argument of "potential sales lost" also makes no sense from an author's perspective. Published authors are usually paid an advance before publication. After that point, they would have to sell an obscene amount of books to qualify for extra pay from those sales, so many authors are unbothered by someone reading their book for free. Libraries allow people to read books for free and IA is essentially one giant library. It even has a feature where if you're reading a book and "check it out" for an hour, no-one else can read the book your reading until the time runs out. Just like a normal library. Potential sales lost to the company is just like when companies claim to have lost millions at a start of the year when they haven't actually lost any money at all. They just didn't earn as much money as they were predicting.
IA provides a vital service and we should be fighting to ensure it isn't lost.
Seconding all of the above -- Since the IA lost its case, I've noticed a number of books have rapidly become inaccessible for me. The negative impact this has had on my work can't be understated, as I've been left without a crucial resource for my research. I. don't believe there's a single article I've written that hasn't been impacted by this, with me often having to scrambling to get access to sources that are rare and/or our of print. I have the advantage of a well-stocked uni library that is good at ILLs, but this is a taste of what's going to come if this isn't resolved in the Archive's favor.
We need shittable cities (actively maintained public restrooms).
A city without well-maintained restrooms is a city where many of the chronically ill cannot leave their homes, and where the homeless are criminalized for bodily functions. If I had a nickel for every day I haven’t gone somewhere with friends because I didn’t know the bathroom situation, I’d have enough to put in a sock and beat a couple of billionaires to death.
This is thanks to yet another bigoted political tactic called the Urinary Leash. If there is nowhere for you to pee but at home, you stay home, out of sight and out of mind. It was used against women for a long time, used against Black people for longer, and used against trans, poor, disabled, and homeless people today as a way of keeping deviants out of society.
And it fucking sucks
This is all true, but also, a city without well-maintained public restrooms is a city with piss on its streets, which seems like a thing that even smug rich people with no empathy for the poor shouldn't want
anti-wasp sentiment is going to turn me into the joker. "oh i hate wasps >:(((((((( but i love bees!!!!!" L + ratio + bees are wasps + name more five species of bee + honeybees are an ecological nightmare even within their native range + the overwhelming majority of wasps are non-stinging parasitoids + the majority of insects might be non-stinging parasitoid wasps? any hymenopterologists/coleopterologists/biostatisticians know how realistic this paper is? (https://doi.org/10.1186/s12898-018-0176-x) + have you ever actually been stung by a wasp?
anyway heres a whimsical ichneumonid
You need to look up red cornetfish

I refuse to reblog callout posts because I'm a prison abolitionist
In all my years in this website, and I've been here a long time, I can't recall a single instance of a callout post leading to actual restitution for the victims of the alleged harm the person was accused of. Even in cases where the accusations were true. Even in cases where there was legitimate harm done to another person.
Remember the sixpencee child slave thing? What happened there, exactly? Was the kid freed? No? They were just run off the website? OK so what good exactly did that do?
Remember the bone stealing witch? What exactly did that witchhunt accomplish? The person got arrested, oh that's great, the american justice system surely rectified the situation
And again, those are instances where the accusations were true and involved real substantive harm to another person. We used to joke on here how callout posts were shit like "receipts below: [several paragraphs of petty fandom drama] [three paragraphs of petty interpersonal drama involving cheating on partners or stealing food out of the fridge or something] [fabricated evidence that the person is responsible for the murder of JonBenét Ramsey]"
And that was back in the 2010s. The meta has changed. Callouts used to be a tool people used to point out actual harm a person had done, rarely, and more commonly were used as a means of bullying somebody over petty drama. Nowadays they're used to manufacture outrage and harassment against marginalized populations. They are a weapon bigots use to turn us against each other. A few manufactured accusations here, some out of context or clipped screenshots there, and people who should be standing in solidarity with each other against white supremacy, patriarchy, cisheteronormativity, are instead devouring each other.
It's sinister as shit, dude, and people will still share these accusations without a second thought. So, why? What is the point? What's the best case scenario here? Raising "awareness?" what the fuck is that supposed to accomplish? Will we get the oh-so-trustworthy authorities involved? Are we hoping for an arrest? A conviction? Throwing a queer or poc person in prison so they can be abused and assaulted and humiliated behind bars? Is that who we are?
Callouts and the like don't serve any real good in the world. At a macro scale they divide us when we should be standing together, and at a micro scale they result in deeply traumatic never-ending harassment and threats and doxxing and worse to a person who almost definitely does not deserve it. And again, for what? A sense of "justice?" this is not justice. This is retribution. It is punishment.
It's fucking cop behavior, and I'm not gonna participate in it.
I think about this a lot.
OP makes great points and I have no quarrel with them, but I do think there can be some value to some callout posts. Obviously, there is no scenario in which a Tumblr callout post results in justice of any kind via punishment. That's just not going to happen, either nothing is going to happen to them or they're going to get a mob of people telling them to kill themselves, neither of which is good.
But I think the 'raising awareness' part can have real, direct positive consequences, in certain limited situations. When you're in a small, niche hobby community like a fandom space, it's really easy for one creep to burn through the whole community if no one is talking to each other.
I can think of two specific instances of callouts I've participated in and that I'll stand by. One is for fandom-based cult-leader Andy Thanfiction. This guy is a confessed rapist, known abuser, and recurrent cult leader, and he has a pattern of recruiting people out of fandom & using fandom culture to trap people in his bizarre belief systems. Short of someone publishing his home address, I'm always going to reblog his callout posts. If he gets harassed, I'm not psyched about that, but I do really think people need to know about this guy before they get in too deep to listen.
The other example was on a much smaller scale: it was in the Marvel roleplay community here on Tumblr. There was one user who had a zillion accounts, all with a very recognizable theme, and this guy was 1) an open white supremacist, and 2) secretly a sexual harasser. I couldn't vouch for #2, but I'd seen #1 with my own eyes, and that was bad enough. This was a pretty small community, but it wasn't closely knit and we had no central discord server or any other private method of all communicating with each other. He would pop up and add people randomly, sometimes repeatedly, so if you weren't aware of his tactics you'd just think "Oh, a new Wolverine roleplayer, lemme befriend them."
I think callout posts are useful in these types of very specific situations, but because they are, frankly, easy and can have a devastating effect on an individual, people apply them to every situation where someone did something wrong. And there is a distinct tendency to apply only that standard to callout posts: "Is what he did wrong?" Sometimes, if you're lucky, people think to also ask "Is this true?" But they keep forgetting to ask "Is this response in any way proportionate to the wrong committed here?"
Like, it's bad that some random tumblr user I've never heard of is drawing really racist fanart of Finn from Star Wars, and maybe you can get her to stop with a callout post, but is the benefit of "slightly less racist Star Wars fanart" really worth destroying some random asshole's life? There is so, so much star wars related racism out there, why bring the full force of harassment down on one rando rather than focus on either 1) individuals with actual power or 2) a general discussion about r

thinking once again about Renarin’s screaming Shardblade as a representation of disability
“Wait, your Shardblade was SCREAMING the entire time you used it? And you used it anyway??”
“Well yeah, I thought that was normal”
I really wanted to make a gif of this video (cw: snail gets eaten) so that I can use it as a reaction.
