‘Cause all of the downs and the uppers

They’d been secretly sneaking off to the rooftop or into the gardens late at night to have platonic meetings whilst the rest of the school slept, and for months.. that was it. It was not all he wanted, but it was all he had the courage for. Trying for more by speaking up to define what it is they were doing might cause its break, and the last thing he wanted to do after somehow finding his way back into her world was to ruin it. So he didn’t say anything about the feelings that re-emerged or the fact that it was just so easy and natural to open up to her or that often the best part of his days were not while the sun was up at all.

Not being able to sleep had some...drawbacks, of course. But it was more tolerable than it used to be. Most nights she didn’t even need to text him. She’d leave her room, abandoning her attempts at sleep, and start through the mansion just to find him already gathering blankets for them. It was often her favorite part of her day.

She couldn’t wait for the Olympics to start again this year. She loved the idea behind the games, the nations of the world setting aside the conflict to come together and compete. Kitty encouraged other students to celebrate as well, putting up flags of the nations different students called their home. While she had conflicting feelings about the metal count, she did help some enthusiastic students make a bulletin board where they put up medal winners from their countries.

Kitty was one of the more involved spectators when, she wasn’t completely exhausted. As the swimmers fought for gold, she was one of those yelling at the screen, as though she could somehow make them swim faster. She barely took note of the hand entwining with hers, but she gave it a squeeze as she cheered the athletes on.

Once the race is done, she leaned back again, a deep breath escaping. Then, their locked fingers finally registered. She looked up to find him already waiting for approval. She gave him a small grin, and another slight squeeze of his hand.

“What event are they showing next?”

He, too, sometimes felt entrapped within the mansion’s walls.. for many reasons. He had all but mapped the wilderness surrounding the upstate estate, though it was rarely of value to be in the know.

But helping Katya feel free and relaxed? That was of value. And he had just the thing, in the form of two different pairs of footwear, with.. wheels attached. The first set (which just so happened to be twice the size of the other) were a plain black-and-grey set of rollerskates. The second was a little bit more colorful, a bright yellow trimmed with equally bright colors supporting. They weren’t the exact pair (those were never in his possession, and he wasn’t sure if they’d survived the mansion’s.. remodeling over the years), but they were a replica of flattering imitation.

He handed her the pair meant for her with a playful smirk reserved only for her and a downward lean to offer up a chaste kiss, “Do you remember to skate?” He sat down on the steps beside her to put on his own rollerskates, hoping that she actually did know and could teach him because he’d never learned.

Seeing the skates, comically colorful in his large hands, Kitty broke into a fit of laughter. She doubled over, clutching her stomach as her shoulders shook. When she finally regained her breath, she accepted the skates with a grin. “Piotr, you...this is great. Thank you.”

She accepted the kiss with a slight flush to her keeps, her brown eyes shining with happiness. Few people could make her feel so happy so instantly. She took a seat, tossing her shoes and strapping on the nostalgic skates.

“Of course I remember!” She stands on the wheels, never wavering, and does a couple tight circles in front of him. “Will you need help?” She stops in front of him, offering a hand to help him up. Cute, really, considering the vast difference between them in size. Sometimes, around Piotr, she forgot about that. She was so comfortable around him, she didn’t consider that she should be all that aware of those differences.
