Star Trek Beyond (2016) Review

Star Trek Beyond is the third movie in the newly Star Trek Universe reboot by J.J. Abrams in 2009. The movie is directed by Justin Lin and stars returning cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and new additions Idris Elba as the main villain and Sofia Boutella.

Now I know real Star Trek fans don’t really hold these movies in the highest regard. The original series was more philosophic and slow-paced while this new series is more action heavy and fast-paced. Now I’m not a huge fan of the original series, I’ve seen some random episodes and also the first two movies and I really enjoyed them. Having said that, I really enjoy these new movies also. They are pure sci-fi action adventures and in my opinion, they’re done really well.

What’s so great about Star Trek Beyond is that it takes place during the crew’s five year mission. The first movie was an origin story and well, the second, was more of a Wrath of Khan remake. This is a whole new adventure, an original story with a great script written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. This movie is dynamic, with some great action scenes and special effects, but also compelling characters.

The tone of a movie fits more of a survival-type movie. The Enterprise is attacked and it crash-lands on the planet Altamid, thus sepparating the crew. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is together with Chekov (Anton Yelchin), thus emphasising the teacher-mentor relationship, Bones (Karl Urban) is stuck with Spock (Zachary Quinto), this resulting in delightful funny dialogue exchange between the two and Scotty (Simon Pegg) meets a new alien female called Jaylah (Sofia Boutella).

The new additions to the cast are really wonderful, Idris Elba is a menacing villain with an interesting backstory, but Sofia Boutella really shines in this role as Jaylah. After seeing her in Kingsman, I was a little worried, I mean her acting was decent but she was more of a hencheman with not many lines. In Star Trek Beyond she really proves she’s a good actress.

Star Trek Beyond is a really great sci-fi adventure, equal if not better than the 2009 version, with Into Darkness being the weakest in the franchise so far. Great action, beautiful cinematography and special effects, interesting characters and a kick-ass scene involving the Beastie Boys (you will get goosebumps). Star Trek Beyond deserves an 8 out of 10.
