when i came out as trans i had an old friend from my church days message me to congratulate me and ask me for my name and pronouns. and i was shocked tbh cause he was such a head-deep-up-the-church’s ass kind of guy so i was super wary.

and after digging a little deeper i found out that he was very supportive of transness, saying that trans men are men and trans women are women

BUT

he also believed in the church’s gender roles meaning that trans women had to marry men and be submissive wives and trans men had to marry women and be strong christian husbands.

which is like ????

the weirdest and most surreal form of trans inclusive misogyny i’ve ever seen.

I have a friend who was not out at his job. He didn't bind at work because he was afraid of that being the action that outed him. He worked at a small place run by a very conservative and trump loving family.

His coworkers were awful to him and treated him horribly.

Once he decided to start testosterone and started binding he told them his name, and that he was expecting people to use he/him when addressing him. Everything changed.

He suddenly had so much respect. They turned to him when things needed to be decided or fixed and asked his opinions on company based decisions. He even got a pay bump out of nowhere. They only mentioned his transition once to say "trans people are awful but that makes sense that you want to be the superior gender so it's fine."

He was livid. It breaks both of our brains to unpack it.

this is why we talk about the intersection between misogyny and transphobia btw. It's not always simply transphobia or simply misogyny, it comes in all combinations and peoples experiences are shaped transphobia and misogyny according to where they sit within the gender empire. transitioning is an act which changes both of these things and it's important to recognize and talk about our relationships to misogyny may grow or change as we do

Hey, hot take, but if a company decides they no longer want to distribute a piece of media they own the rights to, then they should be legally required to sign the rights back over to the creator.

They shouldn't be allowed to just sit on the IP for the rest of time, especially if they have no intention of ever releasing it again.

(No one go harass this person I just want to explain)

As an ex dolphin (gatcha term for someone who blows too much real money on anime jpgs but not 1k usd and up like whales do. Think sub 500$ a year) I can explain. You could argue it is a type of chemical addiction but definitely not on the same level of drug addiction.

It’s the dopamine baby. It’s no coincidence that this anime jpg gambling addiction coincidence with times in my life that I was extremely isolated, depressed and lonely. The gamble made me feel excited and happy when I finally got the rare 5*. You get addicted to the thrill the “hit” of getting the rare character you were gambling for.

As a side note: I also had…. I can’t think of a better term for it? I’ll call it a parasocial relationship with the anime jpgs. Back to being isolated and alone, the anime jpgs made me feel less lonely. They were your friends and they love you! They have voice lines like you’re “chatting” with them.

So for me it was a mix of a lot of unhealthy behaviors being exploited by gatcha games.

Labelling addiction as something simply chemical or biological is a disservice to addicts. It goes beyond that and if we are going to see addiction as a disease it's best to think of it as a Symptom rather than a disease itself.

Addictions are generally linked to some deeper depression, loneliness, stress or some other mental issue. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, gaming, all can numb that feeling or distract you from it. If you don't find healthy ways to deal with the underlying issue escaping an addiction can be impossible.

A big part of the reason why so many addicts relapse is because when they experience the negative emotion that leads to the addiction in the first place their Vice is the only coping mechanism they have.

You can't simply 'stop'

It's incredible how people have been protesting pants and skirts not having pockets but not a single peep is heard over the fact that skirts no longer have underskirts by default. Underskirts (or lining) was a thing when I was a child, no skirt would be made without lining, you didn't have to think and check if your whole ass is visible in a skirt because lining was a thing!!!! Now most skirts don't and it's simply because it's cheaper, fuck the fact that a customer doesn't want their panties shown in broad daylight, it saves a couple of cents on material.

okay so this has definitely breached containment and I want to point something out:

  • Yes slips are a thing but that's beyond the point. It's not just about skirts, it's the fact that garments have lost any quality they used to have and it's only getting worse.
  • Also, telling people to just buy a slip??? We don't tell women to buy a purse if she don't have pockets on her jeans?? Slips are an additional cost we should not be shouldering. They are often expensive, not size inclusive and unlike a lining that's made SPECIFICALLY for the skirt it's sewn onto, a slip might be too long or too short or just not look right.
  • as someone pointed out in the tags even coats and other garments have started to be sewn without lining and the purpose of lining is more than to hide your underwear.
  • The purpose of a lining is to add to the comfort of the wearer; preserve the shape of a garment or add body to it; and conceal construction details and raw edges of fabric, thus giving a finished appearance to the inside of the garment. A neatly applied lining usually adds to a garment quality.
  • I own a wool coat from an Austrian company that no longer exists (thanks thrifting), and it is in impeccable state. It has no tears, not one pulled thread and the shape still holds despite it being probably around 80 years old. Meanwhile another coat I had bought recently at a store already has a gaping hole where the stitches started unraveling. this ISN'T NORMAL!
  • Our clothes should last us, we should stop being ok with the absolute fuckery that is fast fashion and demand garments that will not break apart after two months.

It should be a bigger scandal that J.K. Rowling is threatening to sue small accounts for accurately calling her a Holocaust denier. So glad the Streisand effect exists. Now we can all rebuke her reprehensible views more than ever.

Every discord I’ve ever been in has had a pets channel. I like that about humans. Our companions will never understand this form of affection, yet we still love them so much that we make space for them even in a virtual communities. We care regardless of whether it can be understood or returned.

idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com

this post went from 600 to 2400 notes in the time it took me to write 3 emails. i’m already terrified for what’s going to happen in there

k but also, as an addendum, the reason we study literary analysis is because everything an author writes has meaning, whether it was intentional or not, and their biases and agendas are often reflected in their choice of language and literary devices and so forth! and that ties directly into being able to identify, for example, the racist and antisemitic dogwhistles often employed by the right wing, or the subconscious word choices that can unintentionally illustrate someone’s bias or blind spot. LANGUAGE HAS WEIGHT AND MEANING! the way we communicate is a reflection of our inner selves, and that’s true regardless of whether it’s a short story or a novel or a blog post or a tweet. instead of taking a piece of writing at face value and stopping there, assuming that there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the words on the page, ask yourself these two questions instead:

1. what is the author trying to say? 2. what does the author maybe not realize they’re saying?

because the most interesting reading of any piece of literature, imho, usually occupies the space in between those questions.

Also, sometimes it has hidden meaning relating to how art was funded.  For example, Dickens never met an adjective he didn’t like because he was paid by the word.  Dumas included long and pointless dialogue because he was paid by the line.  Even stuff that was purposely included for dumbass reasons can teach us about the world the author lived in.
