“Oh, you look quite nice from this angle, brother.”

A CROOKED GRIN LINGERED ON THE DAI’S LIPS AS THE POINT OF HIS SWORD carefully poked the tip of his friend’s nose. After all the endless trainings, he was finally showing some real improvement; the fact that Rauf lying on the floor was a solid proof of that, and he was forever grateful to them for not giving up on him even for a single second. Truly, he had no idea as to how he should repay their kindness. Other than endless words of gratitude, unfortunately he didn’t have much to offer. Not to mention, he was sure they were getting tired of hearing a million thanks at the end of each session.. So.. How about something else this time then?

  “Come here.”

Just like his words, he was well aware that a hug was not enough. However, as he pulled them up, he couldn’t help pulling them close and wrapping his arm around their frame.

“I am sure you don’t want to hear this but, thank you, Rauf. Tell me, how can I repay your kindness?

From behind his face-guard, Rauf was grinning. But surely Malik could see the crinkle of his eyes, how wide with shock they bore back into his own, how they seemed to glimmer with pride. Never had he been more pleased to be taken down.

With a little chuckle, Rauf stood once the blade was safely away. “You should be very proud, brother! Your form was excellent and you are only getting --”

He stopped abruptly as Malik pulled him closer, the words caught in his throat as he inhaled sharply. As much as he admittedly adored the attention, he was stiff in his embrace--eyes were everywhere after all. But at the same time, he trusted that Malik would never compromise him and act so carelessly and to be so close to the him...

Rauf swallowed thickly as he slowly relaxed. “--stronger.” He finished quietly, with a little shy laugh. “Do not thank me, brother. After all, you are the one who has put in the work, the practice, you are the one who has shown discipline and determination.” His hands clasped Malik’s forearms, a show of brotherhood, but then his grip relaxed as his calloused hands seemed to take a more tender hold. Rauf’s voice dropped quieter. “Although I can think of a few ways you could repay me, if you are so...insistent.”

Tell us all about your first leap of faith. Was it scary? Did you just go for it? Did you breaks anything?

“It was– exciting.. and ‘life-changing’, in  a way. And I was nervous, of course. I had seen other novices fail before and while confidence may be a positive trait, too much can  be fatal. Sometimes deadly even. But nervous or not, when I stood on the platform I didn’t hesitate. I wanted to do it, so I did. That moment I will never forget, with my feet off the ground and my whole body in the air, the thrill that seeped deep into my bones.

It was all over in a matter of seconds and I hit the hay. My legs felt numb at first, and it took me a moment or two to gather my bearings and stand. It turned out I had sprained one of my ankles. But it wasn’t anything serious  and I didn’t care. I looked back up the tower I had just jumped off and in that very moment I felt like I could do anything.”

This much, Rauf knew to be true. His face was almost entirely covered, apart from his eyes which showed the faintest signs of a smile.

“The bare minimum? In desperation, perhaps. But in terms of our Creed, survival has a much more broader meaning. Be prudent, brother. But do not let your guard down. Templar influence, I’m afraid, continues to grow.”

raufofmasyaf ( Merman AU )

Shay had a good haul today but it’s now what one may think. It was nothing like fish, or anything important to the merfolk but more of trinkets he had gathered from clueless passing vessels and their sleeping land dwellers on deck. He packed them in a sling he had made himself from the cloth he gathered from one of his ventures in the past right before diving back into the deep sea. He did not exactly reside within the deep itself but simply dove in back to visit a man who had taken him in as a young orphan. Rauf, one of the elder merfolk, who had lived in times when stories of the brutal land dwellers were reality and not just mere oral tradition passed on to future generations. Even if the elder was one who did not take a liking to the matters of land, and that was putting it lightly, Shay still found him as someone who would be more willing to open up to these things than those of his group. He doubted that Liam would even bothered to entertain this “childish fascination.” Still, having no one to talk to about interests no matter how odd they may be was a pain and so he took a risk with this one. “Rauf!” Shay darted towards the other’s direction the moment he caught sight of him. “Guess what I got?”

Rauf had just returned from a hunt, having already eaten his prey, when he felt Shay approaching him. He smiled. It was nice to be visited by his ward every once in a while. Though he could already anticipate the merman’s reasons for visiting. Still, he could only hope that Shay’s fascination with the land creatures would fade--entertaining him had already long grown tiresome. However, he was patient and his hope was that soon Shay would realize, hopefully not the hard way, how dangerous land dwellers could be.

“Safety and peace, Shay.” Rauf was already swimming in his direction and he had met him half way. He continued swimming, motioning with a slight movement of his head for him to follow. Although he didn’t particularly like swimming near the surface, he was willing to move closer--for Shay’s sake.

“Hmm,” Rauf hummed as he pretended to put a lot of thought into his response. His makeshift cloth bag of unknown things did not esape his notice. “Let me see--what sort of recklessness could you have gotten into today...”

Outrage, distress, confusion coursed through the collective vein of the Brotherhood with their former master’s ashes hardly cool, and for what he had wrought with their minds ere an end was put to him. Now they flocked to their brother, the one who had wielded his blade against his mentor, to bring him their anger, their questions.

But as Altaïr stood in Al Mualim’s place he had few answers for them, few that convinced the others easily of his reasons, few that explained the Old Man’s final madness—for, though he himself had witnessed it, how to convey what he had seen in the garden? Yet, the chaos here was almost harder to bear. ‘{ You must let me speak, if you wish for answers! }’ he appealed to the crowd in the courtyard, by now civilians and assassins alike. ‘{ You shall have all that I can give. }’

Rauf could hear the confusion among the crowd, those who wept for the Mentor, those who demanded Altaïr speak, those who demanded he be silenced for his treachery. There were few in the crowd who sided with Altaïr, who beseeched those who would listen to allow the man to speak. How he yearned to be among them, to stand tall beside his brother. But how could he, in good conscious, do so? After killing their mentor? After burning his corpse?

But at Altaïr’s words, that which commanded to be heeded, the crowd was able to quiet somewhat. There were still murmurs, whispers. Rauf could hardly stand it. He pushed through the card, to move closer to Altaïr, that he might hear him speak, that the fire might be quenched. That there could be no more doubt.

“Then speak, Altaïr,” Rauf spoke up when the crowd had quieted, his voice travelling but he did not seem to attack the man. His tone was distant and neutral. Level. As if Rauf were speaking to an intruder, a stranger. Someone undeserving of his trust.

When Rauf moved to leave, so did Darim. Though he wouldn’t do so without a last glance over his shoulder, back to the dead man. A burial for the man who had attempted to kill him wasn’t exactly the first thought weighing on his mind. But he knew the traditions and rituals. The boy fell into step with his mentor, not losing another word.

It was just a short walk for them until the gates of Masyaf came into view. And once they passed them, thankfully, without facing another attacker, Darim almost stopped in his tracks. A thought occurred to him. And even though he kept walking and his mouth remained shut, his gaze was lifted to find the older Assassin walking beside him. His father- They would’ve to tell him what had happened. And he would learn that they had left the city. Without his permission.

Besides the shock over his first murder, now the worry over his father’s ire displayed itself on the face of the youth. His brows knit together in concern as he climbed the path up the mountain beside Rauf.

He could feel the younger man’s gaze on him as they made their way through the village toward the fortress. The worry was evident there on his face. Rauf could empathize. He too wasn’t excited to tell the Mentor that he took his son outside of the city limits without permission. Even if it was with the intent to help Darim practice his bowmanship.

But this matter was of great importance and Rauf was not one to allow petty shame to compromise the brotherhood. Still, he understood Darim’s hesitation and worry. He patted the young man on the shoulder.

“Do not worry, Darim,” The corner’s of Rauf’s eyes crinkled from his smile, his voice reassuring. “I am certain the Mentor will not be that harsh with us.”
