Tumblr Slang Survey!

Hi! I’m writing my BA thesis about the language of Tumblr and for that I really need you to fill in THIS SURVEY. It shouldn’t take you much time and it’d help me a lot, so if you filled it in, I’d be very grateful! Please note that you shouldn’t look up any of the words meanings of which you are asked to give; also the last question is rather important, so try to elaborate :). If you have any questions, please send me an ask. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

(and please reblog and spread the word? thank you thank you thank you <3)

short clip about sign language in Nicaragua and how in the aftermath of the 1979 revolution deaf children who had been largely neglected were joined together in special schools. Initially the program emphasized teaching spoken spanish and lipreading which had little success and communication between the teachers and students remained problematic. however the students themselves gradually began inventing their own gestures to interact with each other. As numbers grew and older students passed  on their methods to younger students, the language evolved to contain complex grammar conventions similar to most languages in the world and is now used by over 3000 people throughout the country.

"German’s not hard, it only has four cases, you should try Russian or Finnish!"

but if you’re not doing Russian or Finnish and German is the first exposure you’ve ever had to cases then… yes, it can be hard.

How about we stop shaming people for stuff they struggle with or going for the linguistic one-upmanship and just accept that everybody’s language journey is an individual experience?

Every 2 weeks, the last native speaker of an endangered language passes on. The Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages is dedicated to preserving and documenting these languages through "linguist-aided, community-driven" initiatives around the world.
The Linguists Against Humanity community would like to adopt an endangered language for the holiday season! Your donation will go straight to Living Tongues, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and their Adopt-A-Language program, making the following resources possible:
  • "Multi-media educational materials such as videos and talking dictionaries,
  • Digital databases containing maps, recordings of oral history and endangered knowledge systems,
  • Scientific reference grammars,
  • Traditional pedagogical materials such as ABC books, childrens readers and translated texts,
  • Informational videos and booklets,
  • Fieldtrips for linguists to work with local language activists,
  • Language Technology Kits for endangered language speakers"
**VOTE for which language the LAH community should adopt HERE!** These languages have as few as 40 speakers and really need our help! Let's do something awesome together!

GUYZ we launched the fundraiser!  LET'S ADOPT AN ENDANGERED LANGUAGE!! :)

I don't know if you'd buy textbooks or anything, but there's one called Deutsch, Na Klar! that has a lot of info and 200 pages of exercises. Here's the edition I used. And here's the workbook. And there's a lab book for listening too and all of it should be online.
