Culture, Power & Politics  Tuesdays, 2 October - 27 November, 6:30-8:30pm

Ridley Road Market Bar, 49 Ridley Road, Dalston, London, E8 2NP What is the connection between culture and power? How do the ideas we have about what is ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ influence our decisions? How did Brexit happen? What is gender? Cultural theory makes use of techniques from philosophy, history, sociology, human geography, anthropology and political and critical theory to examine these questions in the context of contemporary popular cultures. If you’ve never been to university, have been but miss the critical debates or are curious about who decides what counts as knowledge in the first place, this introductory course is for you.

The Black Paper behind the Mirror:  A 9 minute meditation.

This new work by Ken Flaherty explores the world we live in where conflict is our primary condition, toying with the notion of the moment of death do beliefs become meaningless.     A world where there is No Right and Wrong.

Created especially for the closing of Doomed Gallery this is an experiential, immersive, experience using sound and vision as a weapon to assault the senses, de-stabilising the mind and body. Projected Vection illusions bring participants to a sense of weightlessness and hypersensitivity.

"original noise track composed by Ken Flaherty in collaboration with Andy Rowe (the slate pipe banjo draggers), inspired by humanity’s deep desire to re-connect with the void where only consciousness exists.

The title drawn directly from a Captain Beefheart song featured on his seminal album Trout mask replica this multi disciplinary installation attempts to explore the possibility of looking beyond the mirror.

As Indicated the piece lasts 9 minutes we only allow small groups in at a time. You will have sign a waiver beforehand.

There are No guarantees that you will be transformed. This is not a passive show if experience nausea, vertigo are epilepsy this is not for.

The Show be on 30th August from 6pm

Perplexed Meanderer, refers to my constant wandering without really knowing where I am going, finding unique opportunities to photograph my experiences. I find that the best creative moments for me personally happen when I’m in my own little world, wandering the streets and areas of far-flung places. When I’m wandering, I’m lost in my own world and the moments I capture are these beautiful unexpected situations that I feel I’ve experienced with my subjects; just them and I together. I am incredibly influenced by artists such as Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Wim Wenders whom inspire in me the importance of capturing those precise moments and the structure and meaning of shape and colour.

GET OUT OF MY GALLERY : 10/08/18 - 12/08/18  Nicky Carvell & Holly Birtles  Opening Night  09/08/18, 6-9 pm

‘I’M SCARED OF NO-ONE’ Since 1990 Phil Mitchell has been ruling Albert Square, which is based on Fassett Square in Dalston, with his big fists and bald red head.

As one of the final shows at Doomed Gallery, Nicky Carvell and Holly Birtles will pay a twisted tribute to him also referencing the critical point at which Ken chucks everyone out of his gallery at the end of the night.

Using photography, blow ups, cut outs and naff graphics, this show is an irreverent honouring of the ending of an East End era.

Nicky’s dad looks a bit like him too

IT WILL FIND YOU : 27/ 07/18  is an exploration into the nature and effects of Fear. With the subject of anxiety, looming geopolitical and ideological conflict, decision fatigue, and a host of other societal causes being brought to the spotlight, the personification of Fear has become a tenet of the modern condition. It is an inescapable aspect of existence, defining the reality of the individual and their respective environments on both conscious and subconscious levels.

The exhibited works present a personal and multi-faceted view of this omni-present current of the psyche from the artists perspective, addressing points of stigma within their respective geographies.

COCKFIGHT   Opens 16th and 18/19th Aug

Artist and photographer Kevin Berry’s debut solo exhibition simply titled ‘Cockfight’ delves into themurky world of cockfighting, an ancient bloodsport that has been banned in most countries yet is still hugely popular and widely practised in some parts of the world.Whilst in the Caribbean, the artist met individuals who raise and train gamecocks to fight to the death. In their culture, cockfighting is a way of life, it is normalised. It’s a way to earn extra income, it’s something that brings communities together. It is something to be proud of when you don’t have much to go on. Allowing Kevin full access to freely document and witness the pre-season training regimes that go into raising prize-winning gamecocks, the exhibition offers an impartial insight into the grey world of a nowlargely illegal spectator bloodsport; an activity that dates back some 6,000 years and was once distinctly popular in both British and European culture. In an editorial photography style Kevin presents what he was invited to see. Opening night times 6-9pm and weekend times 12-7pm.

NOTO_NEXUS is a multi-dimensional showcase of work by recent graduates from the University for the Creative Arts (Epsom) BA Fashion Promotion & Imaging course. The exhibition examines and re-presents a variety of critical issues at the forefront of the arts, culture and society at large. A collection of fashion and documentary photography, experimental graphic design and abstract film, NOTO_NEXUS is focused on the exploration of ‘content’ within contemporary contexts. The opening night will introduce sound and music too, encouraging wider reflection on the cultural value of the gallery space and how it can be used.

OBCURA | Stealing Frames Collective | 12th  and 14th July

We created stealing frames as a way to channel our artistic ideas and impulses into a visual form, particularly photography. we wanted to challenge ourselves by finding ways to mesh all our diverse backgrounds (i.e. illustration, motion graphics, videography, music production)—including our personal processes and techniques—into a cohesive union of art, which itself made up of separate interpretations of the same subject and environment in each given session. stealing frames had its beginnings in the summer of ‘17 as a 5-member photography collective. through mutual connections, we originally gathered for a single session meant to [test/explore/etc] how we work together. what could easily have been a discordant clash of styles and vision turned out to be a harmonious path of collaboration and creativity, waiting to be explored. since then, working with one another in some shape or form has solidified how we inspire, influence, and evolve within the collective and within the realm of art. not a year later, we’ve invited new members to stealing frames, in the hopes of growing our collective and allowing the abstractions of our work to be manifested in physical form,
