I tell my daughter she is kind first I say it to remind her that kindness is a virtue she should not lose I tell her that she is smart second I say it so she can infuse her being with knowledge, knowledge is power and women rarely have power I tell my daughter she is funny third I say it so she’ll spend her days laughing, daughters of immigrants rarely laugh I tell her that she is beautiful fourth, I say that last because I want her to know that her beauty is real but not as important as all the bits and pieces that make up her being. Her beauty is real but I want her to know it’s not for the consumption of others. Her beauty is raw but I want her to know that there will be days she will not see that. And on the days she doesn’t see her beauty I hope she remembers: she is kind she is smart she is funny & that kind of beauty is everlasting.
