Hot fandom discourse take but framing dark content as only being acceptable if its a vehicle for exploring personal trauma is just giving ground to the puritan segments of fandom.

Simply liking dark content for its own sake is perfectly fine.

It also opens the door for random strangers to interrogate people about their trauma to determine if they're "allowed" to write dark content, only to then most likely turn around and use that sensitive information against them anyways.

if a character means enough to me i will truly never stop thinking about them. i just retire them into a little back room in my brain and periodically bring them out to stare at them under a little light

Me in 2020: obsessed with a character in a musical with a pink colour palette, a flirty personality, the best number in her show, and hides her trauma behind her hypersexuality and a catchy pop song

no woman is required to “respect” cultural practices which are inherently degrading to them or religious beliefs which devalue them as human beings. we are not required to adhere to a state of patriarchal reverence whether we’re observing our own society or others, and we’re free to both criticize and reject any ideology that views female human beings as innately inferior or born for subservience.

I categorically reject cultural relativism, especially as it relates to supporting the fundamental human rights of women and girls. I don't give a goddamn what country you're from or your personal beliefs.

In order to fully invest in cultural relativism you have to believe that some women are more or less human depending on when they're born. Cultural relativists rarely apply the same to human rights violations against men.

Cultural practices that treat women are subservient didn't come about completely organically or spring fully formed from the ground, they were created and shaped by men in order to justify and uphold male ownership over women. Culture isn't entirely collaborative and equally agreed upon by everyone within it, some people (men) have disproportionate power over it and use it deliberately.
