West African Inventor Makes a $100 3D Printer From E-Waste

Kodjo Afate Gnikou, a resourceful inventor from Togo in West Africa, has made a $100 3D printer which he constructed from parts he scrounged from broken scanners, computers, printers and other e-waste. The fully functional DIY printer cost a fraction of those currently on the market, and saves environmentally damaging waste from reaching landfill sites.

Discarded electronic equipment is one of the world’s fastest-growing sources of waste, as consumers frequently replace “old” models that become more obsolete each year. However instead of letting e-waste sit them on the scrap pile or head to the landfill, Kodjo Afate Gnikou decided to utilize spare parts in order to create a cheap, DIY 3D printer.

Gnikou is part of WoeLab, a hackerspace in the city of Lomé, and has big plans for his recycling project. According to his crowd funding page, he is working with FacLab-France in the WAFATE to Mars project, which aims to make machines from recycled e-waste to prepare for missions on Mars. Systems like the 3D printer could become a crucial part of missions on the Red Planet should they ever go ahead.

Gnikou’s 3D printer was mostly made from materials he obtained from a junk yard in Lomé, though he did have to buy a few parts. The entire system cost about $100 which is a bargain considering current models on the market can cost thousands of dollars.

According to his fund raising page, Gnikou aims that with his project, he will “put technology into needy hands and give Africa the opportunity to not only be a spectator but to play the first role in a more virtuous industrial revolution.”

Daniel Radcliffe talking about his old stunt double, David Holmes, who was severely injured during a stunt on the HP films

i didn’t know about this…

David’s story is actually one I haven’t seen mentioned often and it really should be:

David Holmes was Daniel’s stunt double for the first six Harry Potter movies, and he was set to be his stunt double for the final two movies, but while testing out a flying stunt (famous for being a very dangerous stunt in itself) for Deathly Hallows Part I, he was thrown against a wall, and fractured his neck. The incident left him paralysed for life from the chest down, with only limited movement within his arms and hands. Basically, he never let his disability affect his life, and he’s become an Appeal Ambassador for RNOH, the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and he launched Ripple Production company with two friends who are also tetraplegic, specifically releasing several podcasts aimed at people who have suffered similar injuries and allowing them to cope.

For your education.

Active libido doesn’t negate asexuality. Pass it on.

You can be asexual and masturbate. Pass it on.

You can be asexual and have/enjoy sex. Pass it on.

Asexuality means you don’t experience sexual attraction. Pass it on.

Seriously, reblog the crap out of this because there is someone gatekeeping asexuality and upsetting aces who do have libido/masturbate/have sex.

Trans Uterus

The recent CBS story regarding nine Swedish women who received uterus transplants undoubtedly caught the attention of transgender women throughout the world. Anyone, with even the slightest awareness of the advancement of medical science, understands that eventually there will be few things left in the realm of impossible. The idea that a transgender woman will one day be able to carry a child in her womb is no longer just an idea. It is a reality of the future.

Another story in the Dallas Voice is evidence to this fact as Sarah Luiz has positioned herself as a candidate to become the first transgender woman to potentially give birth. Anyone, with even the slightest awareness of society’s obsession with sex and gender, understands that the word controversy applies to this situation in the same way the word skirmish applies to World War II.

“There are two things that I will never experience as a female human being. I will never be a three-year-old girl shopping with my mom for a beautiful dress, spinning and twirling down the aisles of the store, perfectly engaged in absolutely nothing other than being a three-year-old girl. And I will never know what it feels like to carry a child in my womb… Neither of these things makes me less of a female human being. I am, I have always been, a female human being… I am 56 years old. I won’t be the first transgender woman to receive a uterus and experience pregnancy. But I will probably live to see it happen. And that makes me feel like I am spinning and twirling down the aisle, perfectly engaged in being nothing other than a three-year-old girl. How much more simple could it be?”

     -(excerpt from this article)

It’s an exciting time to be a trans womanDo you ever remember dreaming about having a little baby in your stomach? A lot of little trans girls dreams were crushed when they were told they couldn’t do that.

This is a lifechanging thing that’s going to bring to life those young girls dreams.

Cis women have given birth with a transplanted uterus, which I find the most promising, and fertile Ovarian transplants and lab-grown vaginas are no longer futuristic.

I personally am not going to go through this, I’ve always believed firmly in adoption or if my future partner wanted to carry it. But just the idea of it makes my heart flutter. Something I want to see is a trans woman who has dreamt of kids her entire life, find out she’s pregnant.

To me, that’s better than being a three year old girl dancing in the aisles, and I know it will change the lives of a lot of girls like us.

On a related, and equally exciting, note is the progress being made with 3D bioprinting, to generate organs made from the donor’s own cells (and so they’ll have no risk of rejection).  So a trans woman could have a uterus made for her that was made from her, and a trans man could have a penis grown from his own cells!  It blows my mind just how awesome that is.

These are some VERY exciting developments right here!

The goo that science can do is truly amazing…and it makes me even happier that I’m getting to see stuff like this being developed in my lifetime <3

friendly reminder that, while uterus transplants and the like are a viable option now for trans women, were they to go down the pregnancy road, they would most likely need to get a C-section when it’s time to give birth, as their pelvis isn’t wide enough for the baby to fit through

Probably, though I’m hoping medical tech can eventually address that issue as well.

#notproud of Auckland Pride Parade 2015. Keep talking about this, keep challenging the prison industrial complex, the police as an institution that serves and protects power and property instead of people, pinkwashing of capitalist exploitation, Israeli apartheid and state violence against indigenous people. Keep up the queer-powered resistance against this interconnected festering yuck that is All Oppression.

A really good summary of what happened to us (and me bc i’m the one in this comic getting my ass kicked) at Auckland Pride 2015

I’ve been acting like an extrovert since I can’t even remember, and it’s become a part of my personality I can’t give up. Still, I remain introverted, so always I end up completely devouring my own energy to a point where I’m just simply not able to talk to anyone.

I kinda feel like Schrödinger‘s introvert or something.

Omg, something that I actually relate to.

Yes this I feel 😔

Tweet 1: I can see a lot of people either avoiding Plan B & ending up pregnant or attempting to take multiple doses & getting sick.

Tweet 2: anyone w a credit card (not everyone, I know) can/should use ella ella-rx.com they’ll ship it overnight $45

SIGNAL BOOST. Ella is another form of emergency contraception/the morning-after pill. It’s more effective than Plan B and can be taken up to FIVE DAYS after your mishap, rather than three days. Please spread this around; with all of the anti-choice legislation flying about and how difficult it can be for some people to get Plan B even OTC (like minors, people living in small towns, etc.), this might be the only way a lot of people can get their hands on the morning-after pill.

I’ve also read that Ella is more effective for plus size people.

This is important. Ella works for everyone. Plan B is not effective for people over 176 pounds. Protect yourself

Everyone?

Boosting the shit outta this.

Plan B is not effective for people over 176 pounds.

“Nichelle Nichols has had both a CAT scan and an MRI today. The CAT scan came back negative and we are awaiting the results from the MRI. Currently she is awake, eating, in good spirits and able to have full conversations. Her right side has shown minor signs or mobility loss but she is not showing any signs of paralyses.

We greatly appreciate all of the love and support her fans are showing at this time.”  -Zach McGinnis
