Her forgetting about the bag was fine with Evan. He didn’t want her hurting herself or messing up her back or anything. So he was cool taking the bag for her for sure.
He had to stop himself from making some sort of ridiculous and not well thought out comment about how had she really not ever made a snowman before? That would have been kind of stupid of him, he knew what things were like with Matilda for the most part, she didn’t do or didn’t get to do kid stuff very often.
“Well, I mean I, I thought it was fun.” Or it had been as a kid, he hadn’t had the urge to make one in a while. But… “We could make one if you wanted. You could see for yourself if you think it’s something fun to do.”

For the most part - the snow was an excuse for her family not to go out and do things. Matilda’s brother enjoyed sledging every now and then, but even he would only be outside for ten minutes before getting mored and reverting back to the telly. Or in the case of this morning, five minutes - long enough to break Matilda’s pull-along wagon.

But the more she thought about it, the more Matilda realised that she would quite like to play properly, even if it’s only for a little while. And a snowman seemed a good place to start, particularly if Evan was good at making them.

So, she stopped jumping, and turned to face her friend. I’d like that. Are you sure you’re not too busy? She both looks and sounds rather hopeful that he won’t be.

Evan smiled and nodded as he took the bag from her. “Deal,” he agreed. Of course he could very easily hold on to the bag for longer than she intended him too if he felt like he should. But would that mean he was lying and breaking a deal with Matilda? Of course he did lie a lot anyway. But Matilda was one person who had absolute faith and trust in him.
Shut up the overthinking and just worry about it if she asks for the bag back.
Naturally it didn’t feel as heavy to a 17-year-old boy as it did to a five-year-old girl, but it was still surprisingly hefty. How much did she have in here and how long was she planning on making it last?
Before he could ask, though, Matilda was off jumping into snow. He’d always been almost afraid to mess up the perfect, undisturbed patches, enjoying they way they seemed so fresh and picturesque, but she obviously had no such qualms.  That was good.
“Yeah. I used to love building snowmen.”

There were a truly surprising amount of books in that bag. If, by some chance, this snow lasted - Matilda was not willing to even risk being trapped indoors with her parents with nothing to read. And her plan B was to use the books to barricade her door should she need the privacy, or a good five minute break from her parents shouting.

She continued to giggle with each jump into fresh snow. There was the occasional wobble, and a little snow did manage to make it’s way over the top of her wellingtons, soaking the thick socks underneath, but it was clear that Matilda didn’t care a whit.

The bag, as it happened, had already left Matilda’s mind. Right now she was busier with far more important things - like snow. The absence of her parents left the little girl feeling a bit more free to really act her age.

Really? I’ve never done that before. Is it fun?

Simply hearing Matilda sound so excited had Rita smiling before the little girl had even reached her, and the expression only grew when she came to a bouncing halt in front of her. She opened her mouth to greet her, but was quickly cut off by a string of superlatives - and given how the little girl wasn’t exactly prone to exaggeration, Rita knew without even needing to as that she meant every single one of them.

She was quick to hug her back, holding her close as she finally managed to ask: “What’s happened, Matilda?”

I just finished my first day at school! Mum and dad finally let me go! Matilda had dreamed of this moment, and she wasn’t sure why her parents had suddenly had a kind of change of heart - she was certain that they must have their reasons beyond Matilda’s continual asking - but she couldn’t be happier either way. She was finally at school, and for the first time in her life, surrounded by people her own age.

I’ve already got lots of homework. Isn’t that fun? By the little girl’s standard - at least. Oh Rita, it’s so wonderful!”

The thing about Matilda was that she insisted on doing everything for herself and she could do a lot of it. And that was incredible. Evan admired that about her in a lot of ways. But whenever he saw her struggling rather than asking for help he couldn’t help but think it was because she came from a house where she had to learn to never expect any. That broke his heart, even if she was an amazingly strong and talented kid. She was still small, though, and the back pack heavy, and the snow was starting to pile up.
Evan tried to imagine exactly what a trolley looked like in this case if her brother had tried to use it as a sled, figuring it was a wagon of some kind. Either way, not important.
“Yeah, that’s, that’s true that it probably would, but why don’t you let me carry it anyway, Matilda? At least you know for a little ways.” She’d probably enjoy the snow more if she wasn’t weighed down, and judging from her smile that was saying something.

Matilda couldn’t remember the last time she asked her family for help. Frankly, she wasn’t entirely certain that her parents even possessed the ability to help anyone! Both of them were fans of themselves, with any help or favours for anyone else (besides their son, of course) being truly unheard of. So she looked after herself, just as she always had. And she didn’t mind, independence had plenty of benefits. But Matilda had never been above accepting help when offered.

However, it was a heavy backpack. And she didn’t really want to lay that burden on Evan. She stopped walking and played with the straps for a second until she reached the most fair conclusion she could think of. “Maybe we can take turns carrying it - so neither of us get too tired,” she smiled, shuffling the bag off of her back and holding it out as best she could with tiny arms.

Once free of it, her grin grew a little wider and Matilda jumped into a patch of perfect untouched snow with a giggle. “I love the snow - don’t you?”

@outofthelight didn’t ask for anything but here you go.

Bright yellow wellington boots plodded along with satisfying crunching noises through the fresh snow. Matilda couldn’t help the grin on her face with each step, having decided that she would take her time today and enjoy the walk back from the library. Particularly now that she had Evan’s company - which always made things feel an awful lot better. Her rucksack is particularly heavy today, with the slight fear of being snowed in and unable to go back to the library tomorrow.

It is so full, in fact, that Matilda does fear she’ll almost topple over with the weight of it, something not helped by the slightly slippy, snow covered ground. “Michal broke the trolley I use to carry my books when he used it as a sledge,” she explained, adjusting the straps to try and better balance herself. “I suppose this will make my muscles nice and strong though!”

@ritahanson liked the starter call!

Rita! Matilda’s voice was full to the brim with excitement as she all but sprinted to the woman, bouncing on her heels like a little ball of energy once she had come to a grinding halt.

Rita, something wonderful has happened! The most wonderful, amazing, unbelievable thing ever! (Well, perhaps not ever, but at least in Matilda’s short five years on this earth.) Her book bag was swung over one shoulder before she put her arms around Rita’s waist in a small squeeze --- because today, Matilda had decided, marks a special day, and one that should be celebrated with nice things like hugs.

a good thing to do when you’re feeling down is just close your eyes and picture the beauty of planets and moons out in space. no matter what happens here on earth, jupiter is still floating around looking gorgeous. saturns got a ring on it and its just peacefully skating through the universe. as far as we know, there are innumerable gorgeous worlds out there, pristine and peaceful. make them all your happy place
