Tbh some of u take romanticized writing way too literally and it is killing ur media literacy.

"Growled?! Like a dog?!?!" No like a human person making a low rumbling groan.

"Fanfiction writers overexagerate words too much." Do you not understand that fanfiction as a culture is deeply rooted in the romance genre? The entire basis of fanfiction was to romanticize Spirk.

Exagerated language is a huge part of romance as a genre. It's necessary to give the exagerated, romanticized feeling. It effectively serves as rose colored glasses. It helps build and maintain sexual tension. It's an incredibly useful tool in creating a visual image for the reader to follow.

Please stop looking at completely normal terminology and curling your lip in disgust. Just because its not the way you would tell that story doesn't mean the story is told wrong.

“genocides can’t be compared because each one is unique” as if literally anyone on planet earth making comparisons between genocides isn’t aware that history is more complicated than a set of infinitely repeating identical events. how fucking condescending can you get. the word genocide is a legal term that is meant to standardise our ability to identify a broad set of violent actions and behaviours as genocide even when they differ in the details, because the outcome is the same - a crime against humanity. if no genocide is comparable then genocide does not exist as a category of crime. to deny the comparability of genocides is tantamount to genocide denial

and like obviously when Zionists say you can’t compare the Palestinian genocide to the Holocaust that’s exactly what they’re doing, it’s very obvious they’re doing that, but in order to mount that argument (especially in the smug “I studied this in school so I know better than you” tones levied against Palestinians on here) you have to completely obliterate genocide as a coherent definition at all, leading to the inevitable conclusion of not just genocide denial in general but holocaust denial specifically, because it was the historical event that led to the creation of the word genocide in the first place

"For my first narrative book, more than twenty years ago, I researched the Bialystok Ghetto, and in particular, the life and thinking of my great-grandfather in this ghetto. It so happened that there was a fair amount of material: survivors had written memoirs; at least one young person had kept a journal throughout the existence of the ghetto; and a couple of survivors were still alive. My great-grandfather was a leader of the Judenrat. He was well-known, and people mentioned him in their recollections. Early on in the existence of the ghetto, he tried to make life in it liveable, as did others he worked with. Food needed to be brought in. Waste had to be taken out. Safety needed to be maintained. Early on, in the name of safety, my great-grandfather tried to stop young people in the ghetto from organizing a resistance. Closer to the end, in 1943, after the ghetto had been brutally and drastically reduced in physical size and population, my great-grandfather was using the food trucks he was in charge of to bring weapons into the ghetto. These were used during the Bialystok ghetto uprising.

What changed? His political position changed. His imagination changed. At the beginning, he didn’t know what was going to happen. He didn’t know that the Holocaust was possible.

We do. We are not any smarter, kinder, wiser, or more moral than people who lived ninety years ago. We are just as likely to needlessly give up our political power and to remain willfully ignorant of darkness as it’s dawning. But we know something they didn’t know: we know that the Holocaust is possible.

OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS, I have had lines from a novella by the Russian writer Valeria Narbikova, which I once translated, playing in my head. It’s a novella that is written as though the author were just learning to think, to recognize the world. Two recurrent phrases are: “If there is something, then what’s it like?”—a plea for a reference, a comparison—and another: “Something always precedes that which follows.” When we compare, we are also comparing contexts and histories, and making predictions. This is, of course, part of what makes Holocaust comparisons so fraught: they predict the worst. One important objection I have heard to comparing Gaza to the ghetto: but there are no death marches out of Gaza and no death camps waiting for its inhabitants.

And this is why we compare. To prevent what we know can happen from happening. To make “never again” a political project rather than a magic spell. And if we compare compellingly and bravely, then, in the best case scenario, the comparison is proven wrong."

more people would exercise if this culture didn't make it absolute hell

I teach martial arts. we play games with the little kids. they swordfight with noodles and throw foam balls at each other. in the summer, we take them out into the parking lot with water guns. in the winter, we have snowball fights.

the teenagers get swords and staffs and practice knives. we teach them moves from marvel movies that they ask about. they get squirt guns and snowball fights too. we let them goof off and climb the support beams and charge directly at each other in padded suits.

sometimes parents say they miss doing things like that. I tell them, "stay for an adult class. just try it out." we build obstacle courses and let them mess around with training rifles. they chat while sparring. we scream and cheer for them when they're in the middle of a circle. and then we send them out to the parking lot with squirt guns and snowballs.

it's exercise. it's healthy. it's an important life skill. and it's fun as fuck.

Anonymous asked:

Not to be That Person but isn't being concerned about birth defects ableist?

disabled pregnant, just like abled pregnant people, do not want a doctor to tell them at their checkup that their baby will be born without lungs.

From someone with a CHD that was diagnosed postnatally: as my mom puts it, it's an unimaginable horror when they take the baby for a quick X-ray and then send the head of cardiology into your recovery room

God. CF is... it's just cruel.

I get that some jackasses want to get rid of every deaf person or every person with autism, and that's gross, but "birth defects" covers everything from missing vital organs that will kill a baby immediately to grueling terminal disease that means they won't live to grow up, and their entire life will be a long series of increasingly horrible hospital stays.

No, it is not ableist to want to prevent those.

Wanting people to not be disabled is not the same thing as wanting disabled people to not exist. We can care for people with paralysis and also recommend parents have their children vaccinated against polio.

We can make buildings wheelchair accessible and also fund research in stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries.

We can celebrate Deaf culture and also support occupational safety legislation requiring employers to provide hearing protectors.

We can treat patients with congenital disorders with the same empathy and standard of care that we provide all patients, and also empower pregnant people to make informed choices through prenatal screening and genetic counselling.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!

If a website has a paywall, like New York Times, DO NOT use the ctrl+A shortcut then the ctrl+c shortcut as fast as you can because then you may accidentally copy the entire article before the paywall comes up. And definitely don't do ctrl+v into the next google doc or whatever you open because then you will accidentally paste the entire article into a google doc or something!!!! I repeat DO NOT do this because it is piracy which is absolutely totally wrong!!!

Also do NOT append "12ft.io/" before a URL ! Typing an URL like this https://12ft.io/<URL> will redirect to a site that would break the display of the page by removing the paywall !

cinoclexity

Honestly it's kind of prohibited to mash CTRL+P before some paywall windows can load in to get a PDF of the article. Really shouldn't be done tbh very dangerous🤷🏿‍♂️ ❌️

You also definitely don’t want to go to https://archive.ph/ and put the URL in even after the paywall loads, because that would both bypass the paywall AND archive the article so it could be referenced if the article later gets stealth edited or memory-holed

I’m just thinking about how many times I’ve heard my dad on a long call with an obvious scammer and I’ll start begging him to get off the phone because I always think he’s a very easy mark and he’ll just keep going and then after a while he’ll say something like “I died 20 years ago” and hang up.

Virgin Millennial Daughter with 20 hrs of screentime a day: Dad! They’re scamming you! Dad! Stop! They will take your savings and your identity! Hang up before they SWAT you!

Chad Boomer dad with a flip phone he has not recharged since 2014: Well gee I wish I could give you my bank account number after you spent all this time on the phone explaining this car deal with me but I don’t have access to my finances because I am in Rikers for felony murder.

its so fucked up how difficult it is to move to another country you shouldn’t need a reason or anything you should be able to show up at the border and be like “the vibes were off back home” and they should let you in

In mine and many other east Asian cultures, the dragon traditionally symbolises things like power, wealth and strength (imperial symbol and all)

I think we often forget that in the story of the Great Race, the dragon came in fifth because it'd stopped to give people rain. Then it'd stopped again to push a rabbit adrift on a log across the wide river so it reached the shore safely (that's why the Rabbit year comes before the Dragon).

Dragons aren't meant to just be powerful - they are meant to do good with such power, and to help those in need.

So in this lunar new year, I hope you gain more power, so that you might be able to help others. I pray you have abundant resources so you may give to yourself and those around you. I wish you courage, endurance, kindness and generosity, for yourself and your people.

I hope you, and I, will be rain givers, life preservers, joy bringers.

I hope we will be dragons.
