Danilo “Dani” Vitali | 27, died in 2001

Rebellious, that was how most people knew Danilo from a young age. If his mother had told him not to do one particular thing or another, he would deliberately do it instead. Admittedly, it was never done out of spite, but with a lack of a father figure, he wanted some kind of outlet for his pent up aggression. So breaking the rules seemed like the only thing that he could do to get such a weight off of his chest. Nobody really stopped him or convinced him that what he was doing wasn’t the right thing. If he was going to screw up his life, it was only going to be his fault. That being said, he never once let his mother worry; come rain or shine, he was always home before it got dark outside. If he ever had a pocket full of stolen jewelry, no one was any the wiser. His morality compass was very much skewed in the wrong direction.

Then he met Frey Turner, who was everything that he wasn’t embodied in a quiet soul. When he wasn’t breaking the law, he was spending a lot of time with him, very much aware of his friend’s shitty home life. Soon the two things started to overlap, with Danilo finding it difficult to keep many secrets from someone he was so close to. He knew it wasn’t right to drive their focus away from their education but every moment they spent together felt more valuable to him than time wasted in class. Everything he talked him into was for completely selfish reasons.

Danilo’s mother warned him about dragging anyone into his ‘ridiculous plans’, but once he realized how much of a key cog his friend was in his success, he couldn’t let him go. His devil-may-care attitude towards everything he did was easily balanced out by the logic and calm dictated to him by Frey, who seemed to have a sixth sense about whether a plan was due to fail or not. From that point on Dani considered him his ‘good luck charm’ and never really went anywhere without him. Especially when he brought in new recruits. They were tenacious and ambitious like him, but susceptible to betraying him in a heartbeat if it was power they really wanted from their alliance. Though a lot of them knew how to already, he taught them all how to fight if they ever got caught. He wanted them know how to make it alone, because deep down, he’d already started to suspect that the risks he was taking were going to be detrimental to his life expectancy.

Worries weighing heavy on his mind, he found himself getting closer to the only person who would listen to him: Frey.  At first things, started out as stolen moments, where the pair of them only sought to relieve the tensions that were building with their rivals. But when bruises started to appear on his friend that he didn’t recognize, the raw intensity started to seep into something more for Danilo. He cared. He could never confront anyone about the injuries that had been sustained, but from then onward, once harsh stolen moments turned into soft brushes of skin when they thought nobody was looking. The way he looked at each of the recruits after that challenged them to try again at their own personal risk. Only one guy named Rocco dared to hold his gaze and that was when Dani knew that he was in trouble.

That meant when things started turning south, the pressure sky rocketed. Every attempt to thwart the turncoat ended ultimately in failure. Which only made every job they did riskier; those he would otherwise avoid taking advantage of he had no choice but to do so. As the pressure to rise past Rocco built up, the more his relationship with Frey seemed to suffer. The tenderness they had become accustomed to was taking a running jump off the nearest pier. Every job the pair made it out of alive seemed to end with them sprawled out under the covers, bites marring one other’s necks.  Danilo always passed it off as the thrill of the job, and he knew his lover was convinced of that as time ticked forward.

He wished he’d taken his time with Frey. That was the only thing that went through his mind before and after his last job with him. Aside from the fact that he’d wished he’d kicked Rocco down a few more pegs. Everything about the robbery they were supposed to commit seemed completely kosher, but when the homeowner turned out to know exactly when to catch them out, Danilo’s entire life flashed before him. Terrified of being sent down or worse he found himself fighting back, and he regretted it the moment his lover decided to break them up. He didn’t know how to fight, and despite Dani’s protestations, he held their attacker off long enough for him to escape. When the morning broke and every news channel had Frey’s face plastered above their headlines, all hell broke loose.

Disbanding his recruits was the first sensible thing he did when he found out. Despite many quietly taking it on the chin, others chose to lash out at him. That was where everything really started to go bad for him. His once good memories of Frey became tainted by those who never liked him.  Never a violent person unless he had to be, it surprised Danilo that he found it so easy to violently lash out. Those that he used to ignore he beat to within an inch of their lives if they so much as mentioned his lover in a bad light. Numb from the guilt, hurting people that wronged him gave him something to do other than feel pity for himself. His off the wall methods soon started to push his mother away, too. The thought of her son being so utterly damaged by a person’s death had her worried as to what he was going to do when she died.

He never stopped hunting down Rocco over the years, his mind so focused and intent on getting payback that he never saw him coming. His once burgeoning empire, thought to have crumbled, had been rebuilt with Rocco at the forefront, and Danilo was in his sights. One missed confrontation too many and Dani thought he had the upper hand, his ‘screw it’ mentality truly coming to light. The one thing he didn’t expect was to be affected so badly by the mention of Frey. Years had passed and his name was still a catalyst. Full of fury, his frenzied attack on Rocco all but died, and all he could think of was a list of apologies he had in his head when the knife dug deep into his gut.

LIFE IN PURGATORY

Goliath — Frightened and alone, Danilo found himself lashing out at anyone and everyone he met in Goliath. Suffice to say it didn’t make a good first impression amongst the people that were already there, and he soon found himself toward the bottom of the food chain. He soon learned that rubbing people up the wrong way wasn’t going to get him anywhere, and has since tried to make friends with his fellow Goliath townspeople. But making a new life has sure as hell proved difficult for him, especially with nobody there to control his short and fast outbursts. It’s quite a rarity for him to go a week without upsetting one person or another. His violent tendencies did garner the attention of a few though, and soon it became obvious, if you needed someone to be intimidated then Danilo was your guy.

Traits: Selfish, Ambitious, Obnoxious Occupation: Freelance Enforcer Song: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Tears for Fears

Frey Turner — Nobody ever got to Danilo quite like Frey ever did, every fibre in his being ached after his death and he never quite got over it. Ever since arriving in Purgatory he set out to find his former lover, part of him wished that he was somewhere nicer but the selfish part of him hoped beyond anything that they could reunite. While their relationship was tumultuous at times it was the one thing that kept Danilo centred and distracted from everything else that was going on in his life. But in those 5 years apart a lot has changed drastically and it’s a real question as to whether the pair of them are even right for each other anymore.

Things seem less complicated when you’re up high. It’s not only cars and people that look smaller from this perspective. So do problems. Pain. Loss. Things shed some of their gravity. That’s me. Always trying to shed gravity.
