I know people use phrases like “he’s changing the game” and “nobody’s doing it like him” a lot for musicians, but I don’t think this is an exaggeration at all when talking about Lil Nas X.

When I first saw the music video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name), I just kept thinking about how I had never seen a music video like it, ESPECIALLY from such a well-known artist. I’ve seen plenty of videos where a man is being sexy, but never in the way that Lil Nas X does it in that video. He sings about riding dick while giving a lap dance. I’m sure there are so many music videos where a male singer does this, but I’ve never seen them because gay men who express their sexuality in that way are usually prevented from becoming household names.

And he is getting a lot of pushback for it. People are saying that he’s trying to indoctrinate children, that he’s pushing an agenda, that he’s part of the ruination of society. Gay men are seen as sex-crazy predators, and so are androgynous men. For him to make this video expressing himself and his sexuality in the way HE wanted to, knowing how people would take it, especially as a black man, and then attaching his real name to it?

It’s trending at #1 on youtube and there’s been a huge positive response to it, but he’s risking a lot by releasing this video. The whole theme of the video is religious persecution, and we’re seeing that exact thing happen to him in real time. He’s being called a sinner, he’s being told he’s going to hell, he’s being told that god doesn’t love him.

This song and video are resonating with SO MANY people. People who grew up with a religion that teaches that people like them are wrong, with parents who seek to destroy what they do not understand,  who have had a closeted partner who only told them they loved them in private, who told themselves that they would never come out to anyone, with people who have struggled with internalized homophobia.

Since the world already has their eyes on Lil Nas X, he’s decided to represent himself the way he wants to and tell the stories he wants to tell. From this video to wearing a bright pink leather harness on the red carpet to doing drag on halloween, he is showing everyone that he is not ashamed of who he is and he’s willing to put himself and his career at risk to be that person. By doing this, he’s showing others that people like him exist and it’s ok and it’s good.

Lil Nas X is changing the game. His success will open doors for more artists like him. I believe he’s going to help change the public perception of what hip-hop can be, and maybe even what a man can be.

I agree entirely with the above, but I think it’s important to remember that Lil Nas X was outed. I think it’s rrally important to this conversation that we remember that Lil Nas X released a song that made him popular in a mostly-white section of music, and somebody hated that so much that they outed him to try and derail his career.

When we talk about Lil Nas X, we talk as though this flamboyant gay man is what he set out to show us. But the truth is he was a closeted gay man who wanted to make music, and the same voices that object to him now are the ones who wouldn’t let him exist in their spaces when he was trying to be as accomodating to them as possible.

The fact that LNX has embraced their attack on him and turned it into his brand is a mark of his strength and courage, but it does not lessen their malice. And I think any conversation about how he chooses to perform should acknowledge that he was tormented by these people who are now so offended that he won’t respect them.

I honestly don’t understand why there aren’t more people who, when given the platform to discuss minimum wage, don’t simply distill it to the simplest of facts:

  • A forty hour work week is considered full time.
  • It’s considered as such because it takes up the amount of time we as a society have agreed should be considered the maximum work schedule required of an employee. (this, of course, does not always bear out practically, but just follow me here)
  • A person working the maximum amount of time required should earn enough for that labor to be able to survive. Phrased this way, I doubt even most conservatives could effectively argue against it, and out of the mouth of someone verbally deft enough to dance around the pathos-based jabs conservative pundits like to use to avoid actually debating, it could actually get opps thinking.
  • Therefore, if an employee is being paid less than [number of dollars needed for the post-tax total to pay for the basic necessities in a given area divided by forty] per hour, they are being ripped off and essentially having their labor, productivity, and profit generation value stolen by their employer.
  • Wages are a business expense, and if a company cannot afford to pay for its labor, it is by definition a failing business. A company stealing labor to stay afloat (without even touching those that do so simply to increase profit margins and/or management/executive pay/bonuses) is no more ethical than a failing construction company breaking into a lumber yard and stealing wood.
  • Our goal as a society should be to protect each other, especially those that most need protection, not to subsidize failing businesses whose owners could quite well subsidize them on their own.

THIS IS COMPLETELY THANKS TO THE ALASKAN NATIVE COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER AND PUT ALL OUR RESOURCES INTO FIGHTING COVID-19 FROM ALL FRONTS AND ITS NOT BEING TALKED ABOUT

We sent as many people home as we could while keeping our healthcare and essential community resources open, and by essential I mean essential (like detox facilities), we had mediatory policy changes happening before Trump even recognized Covid as a thing, our counselors and doctors and everyone we could feasibly get to do so has been working remotely from home or by themselves in office for anything non-emergency related

When shut down first started even being talked about we were all sent home an hour early(still paid for the hour) to make sure our company provided laptops worked and we could use them without hitch

When the vaccines came out we immediately set to work getting not just Native people but anyone who worked for us and their families/household members vaccinated, no cost

No one else in this state worked as hard or took Covid as seriously as the Alaskan Native community and their health centers

Do NOT let Dunleavy and his other bitch ass counterparts take credit for this!

I’ve been thinking about how much of certain movements are about “self-sufficiency”, which always makes me wonder how you can provide for everything you need. I don’t think you can. I think there are ways to be more independent and stable, but it always comes down to “well what about everyone else?”. Should we be talking about “community sufficiency” instead? Where everyone together joins to make sure everyone has what they need? Not only can you divide labor, but also you can specialize and have different skills.

I was literally just thinking about this, because of John Seymour’s unintentionally hilarious chapter on community building in “The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency: The classic guide for realists and dreamers.”

Seymour is considered the “founding father” of the self-sufficiency movement, but his stuff is highly specific to his time (1970s) and his place (the British Isles) so he may not be familiar outside of a certain context. His chapter on forming a mutual aid collective contains about a page of advice on selecting the right pub for the initial meetings, which is about as much space as he dedicates in other chapters to tasks like spinning flax and killing a pig: it’s that important to get the pub setting correct. He also felt it was important to script the whole process out carefully, as he appeared to intuit that everyone reading his book, and all of their potential community members, would certainly be as socially awkward as him. After advising us on How To Convince Strangers to Meet You In A Pub With An Eye To Becoming A Mutual Aid Collective, he then casually reminds us that we are all, after all, going to be insufferable assholes:

That’s rather nice, to know that even if you irritate John Seymour in a pub at your first meeting by being too opinionated about mangelwurzels or kicking off about craft beer, he’d still consider you to be (bizarre but valid) friend material. Relatable! But then:

I’M sOrrY sir ????

Anyway

If it helps you win any arguments

The “”“”“founding father”“”“” of self-sufficiency was very invested in the concept of community, collective action, etc, and it may amuse you to quote him on it.

Luke Skywalker + droids

When it comes down to it, Luke Skywalker is one of the only people in the ENTIRE Star Wars universe who instinctively treats droids like people. He talks to them (and not just when he wants something out of them, he jokes with them, he asks their opinion about things and listens to their advice.

… he refuses to have their memories erased…

owning them is still creepy though, even if it’s the only way to protect the droids.

It’s a real shame that no author other than Timothy Zahn seems particularly interested in exploring the subject of droid rights.

Anakin had a lot of similar behaviors.  He trusted R2 enough to send him on missions entirely by himself and a whole lot of the modifications he made to him which were seen as extreme and strange by others, had to do with giving R2 agency.  He could fight for himself, he could navigate spaces meant for humanoids much better than many other droids thanks to his jets and tools, he could hack, and he’s a bad-ass enough pilot to outfly separatist dogfighters even when those dogfighters were other droids.  Anakin refusing to wipe his memory in most circumstances  allowed him to build up a body of skill that empowered R2 as an individual.  It’s unfortunate that because of a lot of the choices Anakin made as he slid to the Dark Side he also treated R2 with less respect for his autonomy, but Skywalkers in general seem to have space in their hearts for droids that many others just don’t.

It’s heavily implied that sentience is an emergent characteristic in Star Wars droids — as long as they’re regularly wiped, they’re “just” a smart computer with limited emotional simulation to make it easier for humans to interact with them. They only develop functional sentience if they’re left for a long time.

We don't need more diverse Disney movies, we need Disney to be shut down and broken up so that it stops dominating entertainment and choking out smaller creators and studios.

THIS SHOW IS SO PURE!

It’s worth noting that Kenneth spent the entire episode making the game (and the subsequent fight) as inclusive as possible for JJ and his disabled friends (all of whom were played by disabled actors/actresses).
