Heaven Must Feel Like This

@tatpsy / tatpsy.tumblr.com

Welcome to my blog!
I'm Tat, Brazilian, psychologist, currently living in US. This blog is my escape valve, a place for me to talk about things that I want to talk about. I'm a person that is not afraid to be who I am. I don't pretend to be someone I'm not to please people. What you see it's what you get.
Despite of my layout can indicate, I'm NOT a Jonathan Groff blog. It just happens that I talk a LOT about him and that he's a person that I admire and respect. Either way, this blog is not entirely about him. I post whatever I feel like posting, most of the times about my favorite tv shows, movies, books, musicals... I also rant a lot. I'm a very opinionated person and I talk a lot about stuff that pisses me off too. It's my way to get things out of my chest.
If you come to my blog, there's one important thing that I want you to know. I don't post here to have people saying 'preach' to whatever I say. I don't want followers. I want you to be able to read what I post and take for you what you think it's valid and just ignore what you think it's nonsense. I don't expect anyone to agree with me all the time, but I do expect RESPECT from the people who follow this blog.
I love receiving messages, suggestions, scoops or whatever people want to say. If you keep respectful, I'll sure take your notes in consideration, though sometimes I may not agree with them. I try to answer the questions as much as possible.
Note: if you are a hardcore RL shipper or ships Finchel (Glee), you should be warned that both things are daily criticized here.
So, after such a long speech, I hope you enjoy the things I post here and that we can be friends. I met amazing people through tumblr and I'm hoping to meet many more!
That my madness can be forgiven, 'cause half of me is love, and the other half as well.

Dude had 9minutes on stage...he was good but Anthiny Should have Been the one nominate instead of Groff...Damn, have you even de the show? Because its weird he got a nom when blacks actors were desserving it more, but Wait he is the only white boy... So yeah it explain a lot... Sorry but true!!

First of all, yes I have seen the show live. I was just there last month. And I’ve been religiously watching it weekly on my computer. It’s pretty rude of you to assume that I haven’t seen the show just because I have a different opinion than yours.

That being said, I would like to point it out that the length of a performance is not a requirement for a Tony nomination. The only requirement is that the actor on the role stand out on his performance and Jonathan did that. On both times I was at the theater, the King, Leslie and Daveed was all people were talking about afterwards. Liking it or not, the role of King George makes a big impact on the audience, it’s an extremely entertaining role and Jon’s performance adds so much to it. So yes, he does make his character - even with so little time - stand out -> meaning he’s eligible for a Tony nomination.

If Jonathan was the first actor to be nominated for a short role on a Broadway production, then I would give you more credit on the “they only nominated him because he’s white” theory. But he’s not the first.

I’m not going to approach the merit of who deserved to be nominated or not (I don’t think Oak deserved a nomination and I don’t want people getting pissed at me), but I can try to rationalize the decision to nominate Jonathan over Anthony. Daveed, Oak and Anthony all have very similar roles in Hamilton (pay attention that I said SIMILAR) and it would make sense to choose the one that stands out the most between them instead of nominating all of them for roles so alike. So they went and nominated Daveed who, no doubt, had the most stellar performance of the three and nominated Christopher who also played a different role and Jonathan. The King, despise of other people’s opinion, has a important role in the show. It’s not by accident that the role is played by a white man and his tune is so different from the rest of the show. It’s a unique role in Hamilton and it shines.

I’m all for fighting for more inclusion in Hollywood and on Broadway and I believe that are fights worth fighting, but in this particular case I don’t believe it’s about race at all. Hamilton did a huge role in breaking this big issue and showing that you can cast a person of color in any role you want. That you don’t need to stick to only giving opportunities to white actors. Thanks to Hamilton this year’s Tony Awards is more inclusive.

If you want to assign blame for an obvious reason that made a real impact on Jonathan’s nomination, it’s the fact that he’s a Broadway favorite. The public loves him, he’s a household name on Broadway circles, it was his so awaited return to Broadway. And it’s normal (doesn’t mean it’s fair though) that the people with a bigger name on business get more attention and nominations than the newcomers. And that would explain nominating Jonathan over Oak and Anthony. You and I know that awards like this and the Oscars are more about the popularity and buzz than necessarily the actual talent (sometimes both go together like in Hamilton’s case and sometimes they don’t and it’s just the way the business works - either way Jonathan had the popularity, the buzz and the talent so it’s hard to fight on that). But definitely, I don’t believe that being white was that made the difference on the choice.

And just to quote you: “Sorry, but is true!” :) (lol what is the truth anyway? Who knows…)

Jonathan won 3 Broadway.com awards. Now wait to see his tag filled with posts "omg the only reason he won is because he is white" bullshit. Its's like that every.single.fucking.time. "Oh, Jonathan Groff is leaving Hamilton? You only care because he's white." "Oh, Jonathan Groff was nominated for a Tony? That's just because he's white." "Oh, Jonathan Groff is a Broadway fave? That's just because he's white." Like there's nothing else to him other than being white.

I’m so trilled for Jonathan being nominated for a Tony Awards! I think it was a huge compliment to how talented he is and that was them recognizing how he can make even a small role stand out.

That being said…no, I don’t believe that he has any real chances to win. Like I said, I think his nomination was a act of recognition (one that is so well deserved). And even though I’m one of his number one fans, I’ll totally be rooting for Daveed to win.

Still, Jonathan’s second show on Broadway (yeah, I’m totally ignoring IML) and he got nominated for both of them. Now imagine if he was playing a bigger role!

Feeling so proud of LMM, the cast and Jonathan! They so deserved this!!

Ps: Though I love LMM and everything he stands for, I'm totally rooting for Leslie to win.

Broadway and Bootlegs

There has been a lot of drama concerning bootlegs with Hamilton lately, so this will primarily be using that show as an example.

First of all, let me state that Lin Manuel Miranda has done so much to have as many people see Hamilton live from Ham4Ham to the Rockerfeller Foundation partnership for 20,000 students to see the show.

But Lin is only one man.

Doing all of this does not change the fact that Broadway is the most exclusive, inaccessible form of media. Broadway is made for the rich. Are you lucky enough to have 300$ ticket for a terrible balcony seat, alone, to a show that is sold out until next year? Good for you! Most people aren’t.

Lin should understand this as the kid who grew up only being able to listening to cast albums. He should understand that without bootlegs, thousands of people would never see Hamilton live, much less with the original cast.

I saw a few post about this that honestly made me sick. One of which said that “you are not entitled to Hamilton.” What makes me entitled then? Having a thousand dollars spare to see a show in New York? It is disgusting how classist and elitist theater is, and how that’s what a lot of people like about it. They call it the ‘integrity’ of theater because, God forbid, something so beautiful and inspiring be available to poor people without us being shamed for it.

The other post, which was not in reference to Hamilton, said  “In a society where worth is judged by price, for better or worse, what are you saying to someone when you won’t pay for the thing he’s crafted?” Is that really what determines how much something means to you, how inspirational and important it is to you? Do you love something more knowing it was more expensive? How materialistic and rich do I have to be to truly enjoy the arts?

One of the main reasons Broadway and theater has survived so long with the introduction of digital medias is bootlegs. Today, you can illegally download games, shows, and movies with no one batting an eye, but Broadway has always closed it’s doors to the public even though they do film every show for the library. Bootlegs are the only reason you have fans all across America and even world wide. Bootlegs are the only reason you have as many fans as you do because I can guarantee at least half of Broadway fans have never seen anything besides local theater and bootlegs.

“But Lin specifically asked us not to!”

As someone who loves and respects Lin and is an aspiring author, I understand that this show is his blood, sweat, and tears. I understand that he has worked his ass off for six years making this masterpiece, and I love and admire him for it. But again, none of this changes Broadway. None of this changes the thousands of theater fans in poverty and across the globe. Most artists discourage illegal downloads of their work. Do people listen to them?

I haven’t even seen the bootleg yet, because I do respect Lin so much and I am willing to wait until there are any updates on a pro shot version, but that was literally a year ago. Lin wanted to film In the Heights too, but that didn’t happen. I know that isn’t his fault, but I’m terrified that they will never release one for Hamilton either. Why release a video when the seats are sold out for God knows how long?

“You’re stealing his hard-earned money and work!”

Bootlegs don’t lose Broadway a damn cent. If anyone had the means to see a show live instead of a shaky, grainy bootleg, they would. The only people that watch bootlegs are people that cannot see it live. I would love to spend thousands on Hamilton because it deserves it! But I can’t even afford to buy merchandise from them. If I could, I would. But since I can’t, am I instantly less ‘entitled’ to see the show that has inspired me and means so much to me?

TLDR Stop pretending like bootlegs are the end of Broadway.

[ Please message me or send me an ask if you want to talk about this.]

Exactly how I feel. Bootlegs is what kept me going while I was in Brazil dreaming about one day traveling to NY to see a show live.

I watched Hamilton's bootleg and still payed a crazy amount of money to see it live, bought the soundtrack and probably will buy every single thing they throw my way.

Had the opportunity to see Hamilton last weekend

And it was even better than I thought it would be!

When I heard that Jonathan was leaving and I would be in DC, I decided to do something crazy and get on a bus to NY to spend a few hours in the city to watch Hamilton. Bought my very overpriced tickets on the bus there, it was expensive and exhausting but totally worth it.

I have no words to describe that show. Feels like something like I've never seen before and it just BLEW MY MIND.

I didn't realize how much the show relies on Leslie's talents and man! he kills it. "Wait for it" it's definitely my favorite song from the show. Daveed steals the scene every single time. And Jonathan....he spends 9 minutes on stage but he's all people talk about afterwards. I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to see him in the role of King George. Raul was playing Hamilton and omg he's just awesome.

Can't wait to see this show again. Just can't wait.
