I Pray: Gods Bless My Lord and Husband

@themerrywivesofcaesar-blog / themerrywivesofcaesar-blog.tumblr.com

Three women, all married to one man in their own time.  First, Cornelia- The Empress.  Next, Pompeia- The Traitor.  Finaly, Calpurnia- Strength. Each had their own idea of what kind of wife they would be, but in the end, they all failed him.  Independent Rome/Historical blog, new to this fandom, cautiously optimistic.

//I swear I am going to get things done here, this is just the craziest time of year at my work and I'm completely swamped. Things are drafted and I'll get to them soon.

Claudius folded his hands in thought, musing. He was a historian, and this part of history was extremely interesting to him. To talk with people who had witnessed the fall of the Republic, to their stories he could listen an eternity. He was calm now, less nervous, and perhaps he could speak this time without stammering.
I understand your reasoning, also I believe your late husband BEQUEATHED you a rather big amount of gold, yet you gave it to Mark Antony, why?

Calpurnia paused.  She knew the answer to this question, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted it out there for the whole world to hear.  In the end, she decided that she didn’t have anything to lose.

“I loved my husband, that I can’t make clear enough, but...he could be very selfish in his private life.  He never thought about how his actions affected me, even though I spent every moment of my life devoted to him.   He did some very hurtful things and in the end I decided that I didn’t want his money.  I knew that if I gave it to Mark Antony, it would be used to help Rome and her people, which is what he would have wanted, so I gave it to him.  My family was more than happy to take me back in and I lived a quiet life away from all the politics, which, in the end, was what I really wanted.”

I will not charge you for ADULTERY- I do not have the time to afford a trial while Hispania is waiting for me. I will tomorrow prepare the necessary documents for the DIVORCE and then you can leave.

Pompeia was upset, but it was more because of the damage that was about to be done to her reputation than the end of her marriage.  She was about to turn and walk away when another though occurred to her.  “Is this because we don’t have children?”

It wasn’t that she was against the idea of having children with Caesar, she always knew she would have to eventually, but he hadn’t pushed her to get pregnant and she hadn’t tried to make it happen herself, but she would have, eventually.  She just didn’t want there to be any confusion as to the father of her child and that meant she would have to end a few relationships before it would make sense to try with Caesar.  “If it is, we can try, I’m sure it wouldn’t take long.”  It was a last-ditch effort, and she didn’t really know if she wanted to be saddled with Caesar’s child for the rest of her life, but she had to at least try.

He nodded, gesturing to Polybius, who was busily scribbling down her words in the shorthand Marcus Tullius Tiro, freedman of the great Marcus Tullius Cicero once invented. Sharply inhaling air, he tried to calm himself, not to stammer - though he knew in his heart he would do so and hoped she would not mind.

Fo-forgive me if thi-this is too personal, bu-but why did you never remarry?❞

It wasn’t too personal, she had been asked this question many times, but the answer was always the same.  “How can one find another when they have been married to a god?  No one would ever be able to fill the space left by him, and at the end of the day, what value, could I, a woman who could not bear children, be to a man of Rome? They’re all looking for the young ones and it’s been quite some time since I was young.”

❝How do you explain to me then that Clodius was there? And like I told you earlier, Caesar’s wife must be above EVERY suspicion.

"You know as well as I do that Clodius doesn't like you, he's using me to try and hurt you. Everyone there saw what happened, he shocked us all. There's nothing I can do to change your mind, is there?"

Claudius shuffled nervously to the room where Calpurnia was waiting for him - he was planning to write a history of Rome, starting with Caesar’s dictatorship and ending with his own time. He had gotten permission from Livia, probably due to the reason she did not think about Calpurnia as important, and there would change nothing if he made a fool of himself. Struggling to not stumble, he sat in the chair, his slave Polybius standing next to him to take notes.

So, um, I-I-I wanted to a-a-ask you so-so-some questions about your late hu- hu- husband, the Di- di- divine Iulius. What was he like?

Try as she might, Calpurnia knew she would never put her late husband’s memory behind her, but she wasn’t entirely sure that she wanted to, and if she was going to talk about him, this man seemed to be someone who would be someone sensitive to her feelings on such a sensitive someone.”

“He was...he was hard to pin down.  Both hard as nails, but soft as a lullaby. He could tear you down with a word, if he wished to, but when he gave you his attention, it could make your heart soar.”  She paused, finding herself slightly overcome with emotion.  “To me, he was always very kind, very fair and quite loving, even though I was never the only woman in his heart, there was always something about him that kept me from being too angry.”

❝I am divorcing you and I do NOT care whether you slept with Clodius or not. Caesar’s wife MUST be above every suspicion.

“So it doesn’t matter at all what I have to say about this?  You’re going ruin my reputation without even hearing me out?  Because I knew nothing about this.”

There’s Nothing Wrong With Me (Closed)

At the other’s insistence on “giving a son” she nearly voiced the fact that it was the man’s duty to make that happen, but instead she stayed quiet and listened. It sounded as though he had been undeserving of her love, but that was the nature of love itself. It could not be controlled and it could not be given at will, not when the heart wanted someone so badly.

As her tears began to fall, the blonde could no longer contain herself. She didn’t care for the mortals rules, she was above that and she could only hope the other woman would accept her touch as she wrapped her arms around her in a careful embrace. “I cannot give you back time…and I cannot compensate for his love or what you lost..but I can offer you hope of a better future and an assurance that there are men out there who would fight a hundred wars for a woman like you. Also…you are not barren..please take my word for that..it takes two to make a child and…”

At this point, Calpurnia was so torn between all of her emotions, she could barely tell what she was feeling.  She was so angry, so full of grief and so full of regret that she hadn’t stopped him from leaving her that morning, she didn’t stop this strange woman from hugging her, though it was completely improper. In fact, she found the physical contact comforting, as no one else had dared to break custom before.

When she was able to get a hold of herself, Calpurnia wiped her tears away and gave the woman a strange look.  “I married my husband when I was 16 and I’m now past my 30th year, if I am not barren, why is it that was never able to bear my husband a son? He had other children, yet I was never able to give him even one.  I did everything I could and I never was able to carry a child.  There was one time...I was so sure, I could even feel my body changing, but our healers said I was never with child, it was all in my mind.  You may be a great healer in whatever land you hail from, but it seems you have much to learn.”

Caesar || Cornelia

“You look tired,” she said, knowing full well he looked much better than she probably did, as she could hardly keep her eyes open.  “You should let me cook for you, when I get up, that way I know you’ll be eating something that will be good for you.”  She knew they had slaves, but she enjoyed cooking for her husband, and it was the only way she could be sure he was actually eating.

“We take care of each other, that’s what being married is.  I take care of you, you take care of me, and we take care of our daughter.”  She smiled and kissed the tip of his nose.  “We’re a family now, the three of us, and soon there will be more, I promise.”

He nodded, smiling delighted at the idea of Cornelia’s cooking. In fact, he did not care much about food, but her dishes were delicious and though she did it mainly to ensure he actually ate, he enjoyed eating them, though he just wasn’t that big of an eater.

You do not need to promise anything, my Cornelia.

"I love you," she whispered, "and I'll always take care of you." She remembered how shocked she had been when she realized what terrible care her new husband took of himself, so she went out of her way to make sure she did what he wouldn't do. She fed him, made sure he slept, cared for him when he was ill, she did everything, so that he could focus on his goals, and she wanted to take over that position again, as soon as possible.

"I know I don't have to," she said, her eyes closing and not reopening, "but I will anyway. I know what's expected of me, and I'll do my duty. As soon as I wake up."

Caesar || Cornelia

Caesar kissed her hand softly, a smile on his face. He was not regretting staying with her, his beloved wife. There were no others more dear to him as her, Lucius Decumius, Aunt Julia and his mother. As she asked if he was taking care of himself, he smiled softly, knowing the truth was no, but to become Primus inter Pares, one had to work. Perhaps one day, he would become First Man of Rome WITHOUT equals.

❝I am fine, Cornelia. Don’t you worry about me. I am taking care of myself and my duty as husband is to take care of YOU.❞
