Pet owners: vets don't know anything about nutrition so Do YoUr OwN rEsEaRcH!!!!!!

What I've seen from pet owners "doing their own research"

- diet trial after diet trial completely ruined because people think feeding grain free is exactly the same - leaving the only food to use left to be the expensive hydrolysed diets

- horrible gastroenteritis caused by salmonella or campylobacter due to feeding raw food (either improperly made by owner or not stored correctly by owner)

- a well controlled IBD patient completely relapse because "grain free" is better than the strict diet worked out for them

- dogs with food intolerance relapsing with every "new" "natural" food their owner gets sold into trying

- taurine deficiencies in cats making a come back 😭😭😭😭

- metabolic bone diseases in large breed puppies making a come back 😭😭😭😭

- bones cracking teeth, getting stuck at various points in the gastrointestinal tract, causing pancreatitis, and causing horrid constipation

Feel free to add yours below!!

It is blowing my mind right now that pets can have IBD. Is it any animal? Only dogs and cats?

... who does the diagnostic colonoscopy?!?!?!

Cats and Dogs mostly, but technically anything with an intestine can get it.

A lot of the time they’re on the small side for endoscopy so we end up doing biopsies via laparotomy, if at all.

Because definitive diagnosis requires such an invasive test, a bunch of cases are left with a presumptive diagnosis of IBD. If they look like one, and respond to treatment like one, we kind of assume they are one until proven otherwise.

Cats are a particularly notable case as IBD and intestinal lymphoma exist on a spectrum for them, and it’s common. So you don’t know which one is which without a biopsy, and IBD will eventually turn into lymphoma, but if the cat survives for 3 months and looks good we tend to assume it wasn’t cancer... yet.

On the nutrition thing, I am also seeing more cases of ricketts in large breed puppies, and fainting dogs on vegan diets.

Ok so all of the above does happen or can happen if you arent diligent in your research and dont understand your own pets needs and dietary issues.

That being said: Vets STILL dont know anything about animal nutrition and want you to feed your dog overpriced corn and meat byproducts (not actually meat). So what do you reccomend people actually do?

You’re very funny, but nobody is applauding. Show yourself out.

Okay let’s take this from the top in case you’ve missed all the previous ‘actually we do know nutrition ffs’ discussions Vetblr has had over the last seven years.

  • We are taught nutrition for both the normal and unwell domestic species at university.
  • The people telling you ‘vets are not taught nutrition’ are people directly trying to sell you pet food or an alternative diet. They make money off selling you food.
  • Yes, there is food for sale in a vet clinic. Food to solve problems, because what we sell is solutions. Basic nutrition for someone in a hurry, medical diets for bladder stones, renal failure, dietary allergies, etc. Food as medicine.
  • That food comes with a recommended retail price. It’s the least profitable product in the building. Absolute, bottom line, least profitable. It’s barely worth stocking except we need it to keep certain patients well when nothing else will do.

I only make nutritional recommendations if there is a problem. Otherwise I couldn’t give a fat rat’s freckle what they’re feeding so long as it’s not going to turn into a problem they expect me to fix later.

We’re not actually in the business of selling you food. We’re tiny businesses, we can’t compete with pet store chains in that regard. We’re in the business of preventing illnesses.

I'm just gonna leave this here...

the most #UselessLesbian thing i have ever done was when i was trying to figure out if this girl liked me or not, just constantly arguing with myself about it, and after a couple, uh, months, of this, i was like, “god i wish i could just like… go to court and lay out all this evidence and have a couple lawyers argue over the TRUE MEANING of her text messages, and then a judge tells me if she likes me or not.” and then the proverbial lightbulb went off over my proverbial head, and i dug into my mock trial folder from high school and found the trial guidelines and i wrote out an entire trial transcript featuring a plaintiff (me), my attorney (my wildest hopes and dreams), a defense attorney (my worst fears and insecurities), and a judge (my desperate attempt at rationality). the final product was several thousand words long. it clarified nothing. at any point in this process did it occur to me to ask her how she felt about me? absolutely not. did i ever stop and think, “hey, maybe i should tell her that i like her?” absolutely not. that’s for people who take risks and i don’t take risks i take myself to court in my own head.

grade A romcom material here just picture the movie:

a harried law student meets a pretty girl (maybe she’s an artist or something else cheesy and romantic) the pretty girl flirts with her but she can’t decide if it’s just being friends or actually flirting

she gets together with her friends and over the course of a few days holds an epic mock trial that draws more and more of a crowd until the pretty girl finds out

at the last minute the pretty girl rushes into the courtroom shouting “i have new evidence to present to the court,” the mock judge asks her to step forward and she just kisses the law student

the courtroom cheers

case closed ruled in favor of the defendant

later after they graduate they get married at the courthouse
