you have to stay alive. you're going to be such a beautiful middle aged freak. young freaks will see you in the street and know that things can be okay.

To add to this as a middle aged freak: being a middle aged freak is AWESOME. I cannot overstate how much fun it is to go out visibly freakish, have enough life experience to not worry about it, and get heaps of compliments from everyone but ESPECIALLY the other freaks.

You're going to make it and it will be GREAT.

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this

I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that donโ€™t follow the logic and science of them makes me upset

What are the most common sins youโ€™ve seen relating to this? I wanna know

Mordor.

Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itโ€™s from a shield. If itโ€™s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.

And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnโ€™t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!

So what is a rain shadow?

Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.

Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.

May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as thereโ€™s no scale bar and itโ€™s all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. Iโ€™ve only just started playing with it but itโ€™s SO FUN.

Seeing these two posts back to back makes me wonder how long it'll be before Brennan attacks Sam with a halberd

Brennan comes in one day with a bunch of foam weapons he borrowed from larp camp and challenges that man to a duel

Horses just be standing around in fields naked eating some of that sweet sweet grass

What a life

Do centaurs graze

Can u just catch a centaur grabbing that green shit from the ground and shoving it into thier mouth hole

Avatar
bittertits

centaurs do not graze. their human faces are not designed for chomping cellulose all day. from this we can infer that they have an omnivorous digestive system to match, and thus a narrower abdomen than horses. centaurs are sleek, deadly consumers of everything but grass unless they have an extra horse head growing out the human tummy in which case all bets are off

actually, every single reply to this post is either wrong or a coward, so hereโ€™s my nuclear take

I have to double-check every blog name withย โ€œradโ€ orย โ€œradicalโ€, and I HATE IT, because rad/radical were some of my favorite words! people who donโ€™t respect trans men/women arenโ€™t radical, theyโ€™re tragical!!!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT HOMIE we gotta reclaim rad and radical as phrases only trans people can use forever now

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

Paraglider and black vulture chilling

I NEVER get tired of this video. It would be fantastic if the bird was just flying near him, but the fact it feels safe and comfortable enough to land ON his paraglider, isn't startled when he pets it, and is NIBBLING HIS SHOES... blessed moment, absolutely fabulous, 10/10 gold stars.

Okay but the bird isn't just nibbling

Note that it doesn't start nibbling until he starts smoothing its feathers.

They're grooming each other.

This is called parahawking! That vulture is tame -- itโ€™s wearing jesses (a leather tie around the leg that a falconer will use to hold a bird when itโ€™s on the glove). In fact that vulture is employed. Parahawking birds seek out thermals the same way they would naturally, allowing paragliders to follow them in the process.

Vultures are often used for parahawking both because of their attraction to thermals, and because vultures, as scavengers, are comparatively gentler and more sociable than birds of prey!

I literally love this.

I couldn't stop laughing for 20 minutes.

No joke.

This has the same energy as a writer desperately trying to make their insanely cool but devastatingly off the wall plot point work with the rest of the story

"Do you ever dream of land?" The whale asks the tuna.

"No." Says the tuna, "Do you?"

"I have never seen it." Says the whale, "but deep in my body, I remember it."

"Why do you care," says the tuna, "if you will never see it."

"There are bones in my body built to walk through the forests and the mountains." Says the whale.

"They will disappear." Says the tuna, "one day, your body will forget the forests and the mountains."

"Maybe I don't want to forget," Says the whale, "The forests were once my home."

"I have seen the forests." Whispers the salmon, almost to itself.

"Tell me what you have seen," says the whale.

"The forests spawned me." Says the salmon. "They sent me to the ocean to grow. When I am fat with the bounty of the ocean, I will bring it home."

"Why would the forests seek the bounty of the oceans?" Asks the whale. "They have bounty of their own."

"You forget," says the salmon, "That the oceans were once their home."

@bees-with-swords decided to do another pass at illustrating this two years later, your writing is so lovely

The fact that homelessness is controversial tells you everything you need to know about conservatives.

Ex foster kids, First Nations people and individuals with mental health issues. Homeless is a reflection of our failure as a society, not of individuals.
