“Today,”  Levi said, making it clear by the tone of his voice that Erwin couldn’t object. He leaned against the edge of the man’s desk and looked his shoulder at the papers the man had been engulfed in. “Maybe. I’m not going to tell you where, because that would ruin the element of surprise. And I know you hate surprises so this is going to be quite fun,”  the man spoke, slightly tilting his head as he gazed at Erwin. “I’m not going to let you work over hours on your birthday.”  

Erwin furrowed he brow slightly; he wasn't upset or anything that Levi insisted he left on time for once, more surprised anyone, not Levi in particular, was willing to be this insistent with him. He knew the other would tell him nothing of the restaurant if he wanted it to be surprise, the blond knew most of the places in the city that would be appropriate for this sort of dinner and all of them that Levi would be willing to take him to. “Fine, fine, if the campus burns to the ground becuase i left early, however, its now your fault.”

Finesse was normally something Erwin was quite good at but not so much when he was drunk. He tried to pet Levi’s hair but mostly accomplished messing it up before resting his hand on the other’s shoulder. “I missed you ” he repeated in person, the genuinely happy smile hadn’t left his face yet. With everything that had happened over the summer with him being away and the school being so hectic, all he wanted was to have some time to relax. “Thanks for coming by ” Mumbled the blond. His hand moved down to Levi’s back to pull him closer, resting his head against the man’s shoulder.

“Yeah, yeah, I missed you too,” Levi admitted, sounding lightheartedly but he did mean it. He let Erwin mess up his head and had to contain the urge to roll his eyes at the man. He was drunk and extra affectionate. Levi loosely hung his arms around Erwin’s neck and exhaled deeply. “Well, I had to make sure you wouldn’t do anything stupid. Since it was your brilliant idea to get drunk all alone. Aethelwulf was nudging Levi’s leg and he gave the dog a few pets. “However, I had planned on coming by anyway after I would be done with work. I wasn’t able to finish all my grading now, thanks to you,” Levi huffed, though he didn’t mind. He could finish it in the morning anyway. “You probably should take responsibility for that, old man.”

Erwin sighed softly and relaxed his shoulders. Lifting his head, he took a few moments to just look at the other man. The light from the living room was the only light he had bothered turning on before sitting down. He had decided it felt more peaceful that way. "You look more tired than usual" He broke the small silence, "and no one gets their grades done on time, it seems. You're fine" Aethelwulf laid down underneath the patio chair, waiting for Erwin to go inside and to bed. "Are you going to stay the night?"

Erwin sat back in one of the chairs in his small back garden. Aethelwulf had fallen asleep just inside the house while the man had sat in mostly silence, except for the buzz of the radio in the kitchen he could barely hear, and drank. When Levi walked through the sliding door, a grin crossed his face, “But I’m your idiot,” He slurred, trying to pull the other man onto his lap rather than get up.

If the empty alcohol bottles weren’t a sign of Erwin being drunk, it was most definitely the smell and the way the man grinned at him when he saw him. “Unfortunately you are,” Levi said. It was his intention to help Erwin get up, but with the swift and strong movement of his arm, the man found himself on Erwin’s lap. “Erwin…” His palms were pressed against Erwin’s chest and he looked at him. It had been a while since they had spent time with each other. The beginning of the school year had been a hectic one, especially since Levi now also took on the job of the football team’s coach.

“For fuck’s sake,” Levi sighed as he slipped his phone back into his pocket. He quickly shoved his paperwork into his bag and made his way out of the school building. He had worked until late again to catch up with some grading he still had to do. However, it wasn’t until he had received Erwin’s text message that he realized how late it had gotten. He was quick to make his way to his car and drove straightly to Erwin’s house. He just wanted to get there quickly before the man would do anything stupid. Levi parked his car in Erwin’s driveway and opened the front door with the spare key he had. He walked into the garden to find the man sitting there, empty bottles of alcohol next to his chair. “You’re an idiot, you know that?” Levi said, walking up to the man to give him a quick kiss on his forehead before trying to hoist him up to get him into bed.

Levi let Erwin kiss his cheek, looking up at his but his annoyance was still clear. He let the man in and closed the door behind him. “Not by me. Though Hanji, unsurprisingly, went insane with her experiments again. Though Moblit handled her shenanigans quite well,” Levi said, going to his kitchen. “Do you want some tea? You can tell me about your trip over a cup. Where did you go to, again?” 

Erwin stepped in, taking off his shoes before going over the the couch and picking up Kuro. “Sure,” The blond smiled. He let the cat jump from his arm and followed Levi into the kitchen to watch the other as he put on a kettle. “London then middle of nowhere Wales. One of my assistants neglected to tell me that I was to lead not one but three panels at some educational conference. Before I even left from there, I got call that one of my more distant cousin had passed and after the funeral, I ended sticking around at the request of some of my family to help settle things.” He sighed, still wishing he hadn’t been away for as long as he had been or at least have been easier to get a hold of. “What have you been doing with your summer? I’m not used to being so out of the loop around here.”

The face he was greeted with, while expected, was disappointing. He had at least hoped that Levi would be excited that he was home now but that wasn't the vibe he was getting. "I'm so sorry for leaving in such a rush. I've missed you" He smiled, a little unsure, before leaning down to kiss the other's cheek. "How's things been? Nothings burned down since I left?"
