'It's been a massive journey. It was like 15 years ago that I started. I was 21 when I flew out to New Zealand. Yeah, so it's kind of nuts to think that that has happened and that it won't happen again.' - Orlando Bloom

"I did… I didn’t mean to."

A quick study in facial expressions that collectively kill me. And you know what’s the worst? The moment you realize when realization seems to hit them. When Dean realizes he truly seems to have killed these people, that it wasn’t a nightmare. When Sam realizes that Dean is losing control and seemingly also his grip on reality. And when Cas remembers the promise Dean asked him to make.

I mean, how much do you want to bet that what is most probably going through Sam’s and Cas’ heads at the very same time is…

"…if I go darkside again, you gotta take me out."
"…I might have to kill my brother."

Just… nope. NOPE! *nopes into eternity*

Yes! When my queue just published this I spent like eight hours looking at their faces, as you do, and thinking about why exactly this exchange is my absolute favourite scene in the whole show, and it’s exactly because of that.

We have Dean being the most open he has ever been, about his feelings, about what he wants, to the point where even his body language reinforces the idea of him opening himself up and laying himself bare in front of Cas. And what he wants, what he’s showing him, is that he wants Cas by his side, because they are companions, they are each other’s support, and whatever horrible things want to come at them, are nothing if they have each other to face them together. He still uses the language of “need”, because he still hasn’t grown enough to let himself *want*, but the sentiment behind his words¿? That’s pure love, pure want, and there may be some desperation about it in that moment, but that’s not the place where it comes from—it comes from what really makes him happy, from what he would picture as his home if he allowed himself to do so.

"I prayed to you, Cas, every night!"

"We’re getting out of here, we’re going home.”

We ganked those bitches once before, we can do it again.”

"I’m not leaving here without you.”

And Cas, at the moment he may have been motivated by guilt and by misguided attempts at protection, but the moment Dean asks him to be with him, he follows. Even if he doesn’t think he deserves to get out, he helps Dean all the way to the exit, makes sure he gets there safe, as safe as he can be while travelling with a beacon. And he does what he thinks is best for him, which as I said is very misguided at the moment, because he doesn’t yet understand how big a part of Dean’s happiness he is, and just like Dean, he also has the stupid tendency to not let himself have what he wants because he deems himself unworthy.

And this is so important precisely because at the very beginning of Carver’s run, the characters told us what they wanted, what would make them happy and what their desired endgame would be. While Sam allowed himself to believe in the mirage of a happy white picket fence life with a dog, Dean allowed himself to try to keep Cas by his side, and Cas allowed himself to stay with Dean when he asked him to, even if it was just for a while. And then Sam’s mirage shattered to pieces, when Don and Dean showed up in his life and brought back all their issues with them, and Dean found himself back on earth without the person he had spent a whole year trying to bring back, and with all of his unresolved issues back on his shoulders, and Cas stopped following Dean to keep sinking in the waters of his guilt and all his issues too.

And since then, what Carver has been doing has been to sink them even deeper into their issues, so they can get to the bottom of them and open the drain, and finally make peace with them, be able to get to the surface and finally have what they wanted. And this scene right here¿? It stablished that what Dean and Cas want once their issues have been dealt with is to be with each other. And I can’t wait until they’re finally in the emotional place where this scene can pay off.

This is no new information, I was just having many feelings about it at the moment, and needed to write an ode to this absolutely wonderful scene :,)
