It’s understandable why more and more people are leaving certain circles of the roleplaying community, if not in general. It’s because of all the toxicity that permeates the airwaves like a virus. Seriously, you’d think we were all arguing religion and politics when really the basic concept of roleplaying is to portray fictional characters for a non-profit recreational hobby. Some of you seem to have forgotten what a hobby is. Allow me to educate you:
- Hobby (noun) - an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation.
The fact that some of you cannot behave in a civil manner in a community that is based around fictional characters is appalling. No one ever said this is a competition and no one should be demanding you of anything. This is not a job. Let me repeat that: This. Is. Not. A. Job. I cannot believe that something as simple as roleplaying has turned into a toxic and grueling environment that pushes others away.
Anonymous hate is vile: we are not a government or hierarchy and do not have any right to police or demand people into adhering to our whims. The jealousy and manipulative behavior that comes from doubles is unacceptable: so what if you play the same character as another person? You are not better than them, and they are not better than you. Each portrayal is different, so stop acting like a self-entitled 12 year old who just their favorite toy taken away.
When did this become middle school? All of this obnoxious behavior is completely unnecessary. Here’s a novel concept that is worth exploring. If someone is doing something you personally do not approve of, stay the hell away from them! Unfollow, the button is right here. Blacklist, another fabulous option to rid yourself of someone you do not want to associate with. X-Kit has a whole set of apps that prevent you from seeing misconduct you would rather not engage in. Staying away from someone is the easiest (and most relaxing) thing you can do. Do not acknowledge their behavior, do not explain yourself or waste your time, delete harmful messages, and stay wherever you feel content.
Roleplay. Is. A. Hobby.
