i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies it’’s sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and i’m not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home i’m talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because it’s literally not even that difficult and it matters so much

i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people can’t even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you don’t need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught… but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i don’t know. please learn how to cook for yourself if you’re able. i’m not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuber’s “best” recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get

Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook

not comprehensive but heres some:

internet shaquille’s basics but especially:

food safety + a recipe to demonstrate

how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)

basics with babish s1 & 2, but particularly:

  • freezer meals,
  • weeknight meals,
  • kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
  • kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)

and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:

again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics

Marcus Rashford may have missed a penalty, but thousands of children were fed during the pandemic because of him and I think that’s a far greater thing to be remembered for.

I’m so fucking sick of the expectation that liberals much be 100% factually correct 100% of the time, but right wing idiots can believe that the coronavirus is a hoax and spread dangerous misinformation because they simply can.

Recently I had a conversation with an American friend about college. He told me that he owes around 150k in student loans. Which baffled me greatly, because I am German and I studied in Germany.

University is free here. You pay around 200 to 300 Euros a semester for general admission, which more often than not includes a semester ticket with which you can use public transportation for the entire semester as well.

Books aren’t included, but you can generally buy them used from somebody else. In the three years I spent at college (2008-2011), I paid maybe 500 Euros in total for books.

Rent and food are cheap, because when you are in your early twenties you think that a dingy room in a shared apartment and deep dish pizza are the height of luxury. In the months I really lived it up, I spent like maybe 1000 Euros a month (including going out, drinking cheap beer, etc.).

So I had expenses of approximately 12600 Euros a year. Triple that, and I spent 37800 Euros in the three years it took for me to get my bachelor’s degree. At least half of that I earned through crappy part-time jobs like waitressing or DJing or babysitting. My parents helped with the rest.

So I got out of college with pretty much no debt at all. Just like everyone else I know here. Some people (because their parents couldn’t help out) applied for student loans, but in Germany you only have to pay them back partially.

Now I wonder, of course. Is this the best kept secret ever? Why aren’t more American students coming to Europe to study? There are tons of international subjects that are taught entirely in English. It is apparently not that hard to get a student visa, if you’re from the US (according to my American friend who did his master’s degree here) and most perfectly of all: you get to dazzle with an international study experience on your resume. That didn’t leave you in crushing debt! What a wild concept this is!

I think I might be able to explain some factors... though this isn’t a comprehensive answer by any means. Most high school guidance counselors do not promote non-US, non-UK schools. I wasn’t even introduced to ANY Canadian schools and some were closer to home than where I ended up going to undergrad.

A lot of this is based around classism and a constructed notion of “good schools”. There’s an undercurrent that more money= better education. Also there’s a prevalent myth that the name of the school won’t be recognized from a foreign university. For example, I had never heard of the Utrecht University, which is an excellent school. But the fear instilled in a lot of high school kids is that you’d graduate with a degree from a school that nobody recognizes. Would an employer prefer a student from Ohio State University or a university that they’d never heard of?

So a lot of high schoolers internalize the ignorant myths that the generations before us have created. And they are told that in order to succeed and be hired you should go to these schools.

Then there’s also the whole make profit off of college students thing... which is a whole other topic. In general though, students rely heavily on guidance counselors because looking into colleges is such a daunting task and a lot of these guidance counselors don’t look into other countries.

For anyone planning any type of school/community/club/activist event, or for any teachers/professors planning important in-class activities, here is the schedule of Jewish holidays this fall (2017):

Rosh Hashanah:  Evening of Wed 9/20, days of Thurs 9/21 and Fri 9/22

Yom Kippur:  Evening of Fri 9/29 and day of Sat 9/30

Most Jews won’t be able to attend events or classes on those holidays.  They’re the most important days of our year.  Please avoid scheduling important events or activities on them, just as it would be inappropriate to schedule important events or class activities on Christmas.

Please reblog, even if you’re not Jewish yourself!  Thank you <3

2018’s schedule is:

Rosh Hashanah: evening of 9/9, days of 9/10 and 9/11

Yom Kippur: evening of 9/18, day of 9/19

I would suggest that avoiding the evening of the 19th would be prudent, as well. Yom Kippur is a very intense experience, and we’ll be recovering from a 25-hour fast. Just wait til the 20th.

📂 for Tito/Barzy!

Avatar

The nights after parties always seem to carry late into the morning. Mat would never admit it, but sometimes he wonders what it would be like if he’d gone the college route instead. That’s sometimes how he and Tito end up going to parties at NYU, a friend of a friend goes there, and it’s discreet enough. They never stay the whole time, get buzzed just enough to forget that their hockey players for a moment, but around 1:30, they decide to head out, Tito a little more sensible than Mat. They never go straight home though, they usually stop at McDonald’s or sometimes, if they’ve sobered up, drive to an empty parking lot and just look up at the New York skyline. Sometimes they’ll sit in silence, sometimes they’ll make out, and sometimes they’ll just talk about everything and nothing until the sun comes up.

Thanks so much!!!

I see this scene reblogged a lot off the one Hiddleston blog I follow, but it almost always ends with Loki’s “There are no men like me” line, which is completely missing the fucking point of the scene. And I get that it’s about the Hiddleslove, which is great, but it’s completely missing the fucking point of the scene. And it is a very important point.

This is one of my favourite moments in the whole MCU because of its incredible power and strength. This is not Captain America with his super soldier serum juice standing up to a god. This isn’t even a young man who might think he’s somehow got a chance against the prick with the horns. This is an old, old man who knows, who knows, that he’s probably going to die because of what he’s doing, but he is not going to kneel to another man like Hitler.

Maybe he did, seventy years ago. Maybe that’s why he would rather die now than remain on his knees. Maybe he *didn’t*. Maybe he fought against his own countrymen, because he wouldn’t kneel to a man like this. Maybe he’s always been one to stand up. Maybe he lost everything once because of it. Everything except his integrity, and maybe he’s ready to die instead of risking losing that now, at the end of his life. Maybe his integrity cost him so fucking much seventy years ago that he hopes he’s going to die for it now because he almost wishes he’d have died for it then, but if he’s going to die for it, he’s goddamn well going to die with it.

Maybe he’s a Holocaust survivor. Maybe he’s Jewish. Maybe he’s gay. Maybe he’s Romani. We don’t know.

We don’t know anything about this man, except he’s the bravest goddamn person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And that’s why it bothers me every time I see this scene go by with his response cut from it. Because it’s missing. the. point.

I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-Nazi ones, which is great, but I felt like we needed one to show our support for the Jewish community.

all you goyim I follow - I see you reblogging this and it warms me.

do not reblog this unless you mean it. I have dealt with so much anti-semitism in my life and the number of times I get it from “open-minded liberals” is disturbing. Remember this summer when the Dyke Marches banned people for having a rainbow flag with a Star of David on it? I was accused of playing my “Jew card” too much when I tried to get my shitty goy roommate to stop making Auschwitz jokes.

Being anti-nazi does not equal support for the Jewish community. Do not claim you support Jews just because you recognize that Nazis are terrible. Surprise, we actually have more to us than the Holocaust!

If you DO support the Jewish community, reblog the crap out of this so people can feel safe!
