It’s just that if something funny happens on the way to the deli, you’ll only tell one person about it and that’ll be Patch and I’ll never hear about it.

Throwback Review: Dreamboat Annie by Heart (1975)

Duff’s Necessary Albums Review #26

As one of the first women in (hard) rock, Heart had a few quintessential hits in their catalogs. Considered their best album, Dreamboat Annie allows Ann and Nancy Wilson to try various styles in both the vocal and guitar department respectively. Nancy in particular plays flamenco style guitars on multiple tracks which give it a bit of a folky feel. Both sisters are tremendous at what they do and it is evident on the album. It lulls in a few places, but it is a great piece for feminist rock stars.

You know what I would say to people who say they “hate” Janis Joplin (her singing voice)?

That’s too bad, you know, because Janis’s singing is real. Nobody since her, I don’t think, has managed to sing with as real a voice as Janis. It may not always be so “pretty,” but feelings aren’t always so pretty, my friend, and that’s what Janis sang with. She even said: “All you really have that really matters are feelings. That’s what music is to me.”

The job of a good singer is to make their audience feel something. The thing is that, what contributes to that, is that the singer also has to be feeling what they’re singing; if they’re not living what they’re singing, the audience will remain unconvinced and it won’t be as enjoyable.

And god dammit, Janis Joplin outside of performing may not have appeared very real, but during her performances, you fucking saw it, you didn’t just hear it (though in just recordings I think you can, for sure). She was 100% real, though this also lends listeners to either be 100% with her or 100% against her, because not everybody’s comfortable with reality, isn’t that right?

Happy Birthday again Nancy Wilson, you gigantic liar...

When we last left our fibbing guitarist she was allegedly celebrating a birthday of an advanced age, and today, March 16th, she celebrates another.  Yes, this woman above claims to be 62 years old today.

Stop it, Nancy.  Seriously this shit, unlike your REAL age, is old.  You are not fooling anybody.  Women are supposed to lie about their age THE OTHER WAY.  You are supposed to claim you are YOUNGER.  62 years old?  Child, please.

Happy 46th birthday.

When the Men Call You “Crazy Girl”

Bite. Howl. Throw rocks at their useless windows,

their ugly houses.

Crack lobsters with your bare teeth

and swallow their softness

like the universe’s flesh itself.

Say I am a crazy girl.

Say it. Own it.

Say crazy means beautiful, means smart,

valid. Means not ruined.

Means you can’t do this to me,

and I won’t let you.

You are salt, breath-punch, knocking-the-wind-

out-of-stubborn-men.

Silly men.

They thought crazy meant lost.

They didn’t know it meant found.

SOME LEGIT MCLENNON QUOTES:

  • “One of my great memories from John is from when we were having some argument. I was disagreeing and we were calling each other names. We let it settle for a second and then he lowered his glasses and he said, ‘It’s only me…’ and then he put his glasses back on again. To me, that was John.” -Paul
  • “We were each other’s intimates.” -Paul, The Beatles: A Biography
  • “Paul and I know each other on a lot of different levels that very few people know about.” -John
  • Q Magazine - 1998  Q: “If John Lennon could come back for a day, how would you spend it with him?” Paul: “In bed.”
  • “I have had two companions in my life. Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono. That’s not bad” –John
  • Interview of 1975 for Hit parader Q: “Yeah, your friends…” John: “Yes, all your best friends let you know what’s going on. I was trying to put it ‘round that I was gay, you know– I thought that would throw them off… dancing at all the gay clubs in Los Angeles, flirting with the boys… but it never got off the ground.” Q: “I think I’ve only heard that lately about Paul.” John: “Oh, I’ve had him, he’s no good.” (laughter)
  • John talking about when Paul first joined The Quarry Men: “But he was good, he was worth having. He looked like Elvis. I dug him.”
  • “Whatever bad things John said about me, he would also slip his glasses down to the end of his nose and say, ’I love you’. That’s really what I hold on to. That’s what I believe. The rest is showing off.” -Paul
  •  “A song by an old estranged fiancee of mine called Paul” -John speaking of “I Saw Her Standing There”
  • “She (Yoko) recalls hearing people in the Apple office who called McCartney ‘John’s Princess.’” -Unknown (Cant find who said this but it was someone who worked at Apple)
  • “One time Paul had a chick in bed and John came in and got a pair of scissors and cut all her clothes into pieces calling her a whore and what not. He got like that occassionaly.”-George
  • “I just saw a girl who said she saw John Lennon walking down the street in New York wearing a button that said, “I love Paul.” she asked him, “Why are you wearing an ‘I love Paul’ button?” and he said, “Because I love Paul.”-Harry Nillson
  • “He was always saying, ‘I wonder what Paul is doing.’ When John and I were together, and this is about a week or two before our relationship ended, I remember him saying, ‘Do you think I should write with Paul again?’ I said, ‘Absolutely. You should because you want to. The two of you as solo performers are good, but together you can’t be beaten.” -May Pang
  • “We were recording the other night, and I just wasn’t there. Neither was Paul. We were like two robots going through the motions. We do need each other alot. When we used to get together after a month off, we used to be embarrassed about touching each other. We’d do an elaborate handshake just to hide the embarrassment… or we did mad dances. Then we got to hugging each other.” -John

Im just saying if they aren't your OTP they should at least be your BROTP because hell they loved each other SO fucking much and that is obvious. Even after the break-up of the Beatles when they both were so stubborn and angry with each other they still cared for each other so much. Their friendship is golden and a beautiful, beautiful thing.

About the “John’s Princess” quote, iy is briefly mentioned in the book “Apple To The Core”, by Peter McCabe & Robert Schonfeld, as some “understanding” that Yoko was…threatening to Paul: “With Yoko present, Paul McCartney’s reign as Lennon’s princess was doomed.”

And is also mentioned in the polemic “John Lennon: The Life” by Philip Norman, now from Yoko’s pov.  “Around Apple, in her (Yoko) hearing, Paul would sometimes be called John’s princess.“

So, it’s not one-sided.

Also, continuing in this quote in Norman’s book we can find:

“She had also once heard a rehearsal tape with John’s voice calling out  "Paul … Paul … “ in a strangely subservient, pleading way. ‘I knew there was something going on there,’ she remembers.”

And THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Yo, color me convinced.
