“How much?” you ask.

“Uh- it’s free for you-”

“No, Eddie.” you mumble, the soft tone in your voice gone “how much did you read?”

Eddie’s heart stops in his chest, a cold shudder rushes through him and all the color drains from his face as he turns back around, a guilty expression making it’s way on his face already as he finds himself staring at you holding your notebook. Your shoulders slumped in disappointment and your eyes flickering with both hurt and anger.

“Well?”

You wait for an answer, staring at him with an anxious and angry look in your eyes.

Eddie can see that you’re disappointed with him, that you’re angry and nervous. The softness and warmth in your eyes, gone. The smile on your lips turned into a scowl. Eddie can feel his heart beating against his ribcage. He is nervous, perhaps more nervous than he has ever felt before and he is also scared. Did he just ruin everything? Did he just break your trust? Did he push you away for good?

Returning to your apartment for uniforms was a little unnerving. It didn’t smell like home, look like home, feel like home. The absence of Eddie and Wayne was clearly evident as you scanned the frightfully bland living space. The thought crossed your mind to ask Eddie if he wanted to move in here with you, or if you should just sublet the apartment until your lease was up next august. The only thing that stopped you from just slowly leaving your stuff behind was the fact that Eddie himself didn’t bring it up. Staying a week to take care of him was different than permanently moving in. Besides, you had been reunited almost two months ago and not even married for three weeks. It seemed a little soon to just take that leap.

According to Wayne, the house had never been so quiet. When he came home from work the TV would be on as would Eddie’s stereo on full blast. When Eddie was out of the house and Wayne was home, he’d have to sleep through the booming voices of his neighbors and their children. But now, on an early Monday morning the only sound that filled the small trailer was Eddie’s heavy breathing and the ticking of the air conditioner.

He looked so pitiful in the recliner, wrapped up in a sling that made him look like he was partially robotic. His plump lips slightly parted and his face free of any mischief made him look much older somehow.

It was actually quite funny and Eddie was loving it. His friends gaping at him with wide eyes and open mouths, demanding to be filled in on what they everloving hell Henderson was on about. He couldn’t help but brag that he, their leader, was going to be a married man in two days.
