It really, REALLY bothers me when I hear people frame climate change and other environmental crises as something that everyday, average-ass people are responsible for, and not corporations and entire governments.

Like literally, how can a regular-ass person ~opt out~ of all damaging behaviors while still being able to function in society?

You literally can’t.

The future of our planet is not down to whether or not someone recycles their water bottle.

It’s down to whether or not governments and corporations decide to quit sucking up all our resources and poisoning the earth with reckless abandon.

I mean obviously people should still live as cleanly and as sustainably as they can manage where they are and with what they have, but like. THAT isn’t the major issue.

God bless this post this pisses me off so much Also this hyper-individualist shift of responsibility is largely an American thing and consumerism is framed as a solution- e.g., buy more shit that’s sustainable! That’ll fix the problem (buy a new, green water bottle! buy a new, green car! buy a new, green whatever-the-fuck that’ll just ultimately produce more waste)!

I took a course in sustainable engineering.

The professor mentioned that even if every private individual in the world were to conserve resources and the environment the ol’ Jimmy Carter way- by turning down the thermostat, recycling your glass and plastics and metals, cut down on luxuries, take shorter showers, etc., it would only get us 10% of the way to where we need to be in order to avoid global catastrophic climate change.

The vast majority of freshwater use is from industry and agriculture. http://www.worldometers.info/water/

The vast majority of CO2 emissions is from industrial and electrical generation sites and associated vehicles. http://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/gases/co2.html

Private individuals hardly make a dent, even in ideal conditions.

In this first installment of Stereotypology, Cristen unpacks the racist origin and Hollywood promotion of the “spicy” Latina stereotype.

Thoughts?

Also note, @reclaimingthelatinatag , that Carmen Miranda and Tropicalism in general HEAVILY appropriated afrolatinx fashion and music. Miranda was a white Portuguese woman whose signature look was directly appropriated from Black Brazilian women, particularly black bahianas.

Tongolele is another white woman (Spanish father y Swedish mother) who pops into my head when thinking of Tropicalism. Tongolele was featured in Mexican films during the early part of the 20th century; she rose to fame via the spicy latina stereotype. She did so by becoming the “sexy” face of rumba and other cuban dance/music. Those dances in particular were created by afro/mulata cubanas - the same women you RARELY saw associated/glamorized/featured in filmed performances. Do you note the lack of black and brown women (and men) in the above gifs of Miranda’s performances? Totally inappropriate for the type of music and dance being performed. They are HEAVILY African/black influenced (as is the majority of the music and dance in the Caribbean in particular).

So while the “spicy” latina stereotype has created racist pigeonholing of latinxs, especially women in general, black people (women!) of latin american descent also have the joy of knowing that our erasure is at the root of the phenomenon.

There’s levels to this shit.

This is a Sandra Bland dedication post.

This is in response to the recent failure (Dec. 22, 2015) to indict anyone for the murder of Sandra Bland. i’m sick and tired of being sick and tired of seeing videos of our people being mowed down every single time and get no fucking justice. i am traumatized. and the only healing is liberation. it’s time to organize for real friends.

feel free to reblog and keep adding photos or comments in commemoration of her life and willingness to fight for and with Black people. To all Black women out there, keep your spirits high. It’s what Sandra Bland would want.

Rest in power warrior. February 7, 1987 – July 13, 2015.

I’m so disgusted by Forever21. I don’t have many followers so I’m kinda showing this to all of the popular black blogs that I follow. I want awareness to spread. This is NO coincidence.

Black cartoonist Joshua Jackson posted a missive to Twitter on Friday appearing to show an administrator at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts dismissing their request for an application fee waiver by telling them they were likely too poor to attend the school anyhow. The school responded to Jackson Saturday with a tweet and email.

Fuck this school and any graduate school art program that isn’t capable of offering you a full ride.

Well, look where I’m not going to grad school.
