Happy International Women’s Day to all of the gorgeous, inspiring, amazing women in my life and all around the world. My own relationship to womanhood has always been complicated, but I’ve embraced it a bit more lately, partly because I am doing a project about women and it is empowering to be a strong female role model for my peers, students and audiences. (My pronouns are still they/them, though!) I regret that my illness today kept me from celebrating Women’s Day with my castmates at @ovate_company but I am so excited to bring this show to life for all of you. What I ultimately hope for is that women around the world can adopt our show into a piece that reflects their personal experiences - it would be such a joy to see a LGBT theatre pick it up and highlight queer and trans women’s stories, or a Black-owned theatre company talking about their stories, and the list goes on and on. Love this photo and how the light creates a halo around me and shines off of my clavicles. ☀️ Just a personal update on my life, since yesterday we moved into Pisces with the moon going completely dark around 11 PM last night. I spent Aquarius season in an emotionally shut-off state, feeling not only disconnected from myself and my own power, but also from those around me. It really put me in a funk, because I was feeling the negative affects of Aquarius and not able to fully realize the creative community aspects, which is something I always yearn to do. The new moon in Pisces is a time of month that marks new beginnings, and a time of year that marks the end of the zodiac calendar and an intense look inward and finding honesty and peace with one’s self, and I’m taking advantage of these confluences to do more work on my personal sense of spirituality. This morning I journaled and did a tarot card pull for the first time in a long time, and it was the upright Nine of Wands - an incredibly appropriate card for this time in my life. It’s all about overcoming adversity and finding the strength to keep fighting, but also about digging deep to find one’s character and willpower, setting boundaries and protecting one’s safety (which is something I desperately need to do more), and having faith. I’ve felt skeptical recently, out of faith, and it’s bled into all realms of my life. Skeptical that my work in music and theatre means anything, that my relationships are really worth the work I put into them, that I have any power to manifest a more fulfilling existence for myself. Skeptical of magic, period. It’s a crisis of belief in the unknown and as a person who usually has an intellectual and rational way of looking at things, it’s hard to nudge myself towards just… having faith. And especially practicing that faith in a way that feels deeply authentic and not performative. ONE MONTH FROM NOW! I’m so excited to announce my next theatrical project - and it’s a big one! This work is an original work comprised of scenes from Aeschylus’ Oresteia, as well as poetry and language written by the actors themselves. It is about women - not just now, but in Ancient Greece, and at the dawn of humanity, from the steppes of Mongolia to the streets of DC. It is about their hurt, their rage, their love, and their forgiveness. It is a deeply moving and personal piece, and I have thrown so much of myself into it, as have all of the people involved. It will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen in an Ojai theatre, and we hope to start a trend of more devised theatre being created with social activism as the goal. Wolf Moon in Cancer tonight: although the moon is in apogee (the furthest point away from us), she is powerful tonight as she reaches fullness in her home sign. The theme of my life right now is peace and trust. Last year was filled with a lot of turbulence and paranoia, and I’d like this year to feel safe and dependable. Glass Onion this, Glass Onion that… I lived through a murder mystery for six weeks this winter on the Orient Express! Now that everyone’s on a wacky ensemble cast mystery kick, I’ll feel less obnoxious sharing multiple posts about it (even though it’s kind of late). This show was such a spectacular way to end my 2022 personal theatrical season. I couldn’t have asked for a more hilarious and creative cast and a more giving and caring group of people with whom to share the stage. The amount of bits that developed both over the rehearsal process and the run were so inspiring to me, and it was such a joy to be directed by Rick Kuhlman and an honor to have him trust me with turning a monologue into a ridiculous comedic recitativo. First meal I cooked in 2023: donburi bowls with lime rice, sweet potato, broccoli, fried egg, cucumber salad, and sriracha mayo, and a cheddar corn bisque with fresh sourdough my dad got at the farmer’s market!
