Jodie Foster photographed by Daniel Jack Lyons for The Atlantic, 18 February 2024

She’d been looking around the room at the meticulously diverse group of women Elle had chosen to honor, and wondering to herself why she’d been included.

“Finally I realized, like, halfway through; I leaned over to Alex and was like”—her voice dropped to a whisper—“I’m the old queer one!”

“How does that feel?” I asked.

Her eyes were bright. “Feels good! I think it feels good.” .

Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2022 — Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC Dune (2021) Directed by Denis Villeneuve Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1

Desert colors dominate throughout the movie, but Fraser, [production designer Patrice] Vermette and costume designer Jacqueline West went to great lengths to imbue that palette with subtle and organic variations of color. “We worked very hard to make sure the world of Dune was not monochromatic,” Fraser says. “For example, Patrice worked veins of reds and blues into the sand walls. He — and Jacqueline, who built these subtle gradations of color into the costumes — both did wonderfully subtle work, and I had to make sure we were capturing those subtleties.“
“My approach was to pull as much color as possible out of non-colorful situations,” he continues. “It was all subtle differences, not necessarily bold color contrasts. Achieving bold color in film is super easy. Achieving depth [in the image while creating a natural-light look] when you’re working with a digital sensor and digital lights is harder than it might first appear.” — The American Society of Cinematographers, January 2022

Edward Hopper, a native New Yorker, was an avid theater-goer. These are some ticket stubs he saved between 1925 and 1936, with the names of the plays written on the back: Hamlet with Gielgud, Strange Interlude, Green Pastures, The Doctor's Dilemma, and six others. And the priciest was for Gielgud—$3.30 to sit in the orchestra.

Rewatched The Good Place for the first time since s4 dropped and. Oh my god. The Good Place said “people are a result of their environment but we always have a moral responsibility to be better” and The Good Place said “every day the world gets a little more complicated and it gets a little harder to be good” and The Good Place said “even in the face of total nihilism, when nothing you do will matter, you still have to at least try. Because trying is better than the alternative” and The Good Place said “if you have bills to pay and shit to deal with you don’t have time or energy to become a better person” and then The Good Place really said “people get better when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don’t ” and THEN The Good Place really said “no one is irredeemable. Everyone can try to be better today than they were yesterday” AND THEN! The Good Place said “Heaven is just enough time with the people that you love” OH MY FUCKING GOD.
