It doesn’t make him feel any less bad for it, but at the same time he’s aware that she’s right. With the work that he does, that’s she doesn’t even know about, it’s best for him to steer well clear.

❝ ♚ ❞ —— He was right. She needed to keep her job in order to keep her kids eating. Alek's time at school wasn't exactly cheap either. "I think my parents, or at least my mother might know someone we can hire." No doubt her mother would be ecstatic to here that she wanted help. More than likely she'd offer herself but Rico really couldn't handle having her mother live with them as well.
