yuuri shibuya is the straightest boy I have ever read about
Thoughts on the Pewdiepie thing? I honestly didn't feel like the guy was even a little bit racist until this latest controversy. I mean, no matter what way the "skeptics" try to spin it, he clearly used the N word with a negative connotation. I just don't see how anyone could do that and then claim they don't have negative biases about black people.
I don’t know Pewdiepie personally and I am not going to claim to know his innermost prejudices. But, I’ve watched PewDiePie a lot (I am actually a big fan of his) and I think it’s pretty clear that he’s not a bad person, and not some evil racist. Perhaps people who know him personally can give more insight.
Here’s a thing that is really hard for people on the internet to understand, especially progressives, people are complicated. Does he have negative biases about black people? Probably. Statistically, most people have negative biases about one group or another. Should he be condemned for his actions? Of course. If you do a shitty thing you should expect people to be upset about it.
But I can think about this in a personal way because I used to be pretty fond of the word “faggot”. Was this because I had negative biases towards gay people? I don’t know, maybe? But I can tell you that I didn’t hate gay people or harbor any conscious ill feelings toward them whatsoever. I just thought the word was funny. A basic way to make things funny is to use them out of place. One way to do that is to use inappropriately harsh words in unwarranted situations. So I understand why PewDiePie thinks dropping the N word is funny.
There’s a line in the movie Old School where the main character Mitch gets in a cab and his seatbelt is broken and he asks what the cab driver recommends he do about it. The driver responds, “I recommend you stop being such a faggot.” This is a pretty offensive joke, which probably wouldn’t find its way into a mainstream comedy movie today, but I think it’s hilarious because the drivers response was so outlandishly unwarranted. We can take the moral high ground or whatever but realistically sometimes offensive shit is funny. A lot of people say “it’s not funny” as if humor isn’t subjective, but “it’s not funny” isn’t a very good argument.
In real life, however (as opposed to a fictional movie), we must eventually come to the understanding that other people’s feelings matter. And it’s really hard to come to that conclusion when you have a narrow perspective.
I’ve met so many white people in my life who have spent so little time around non-white people that they just simply lack the perspective to avoid being constantly insensitive. And you might say, calling someone a nigger is a bit more than ‘insensitive’, but I related it back to my use of ‘faggot’. From my limited perspective, it wasn’t a big deal, because I do not experience the power of the word. I understood it was a ‘bad’ word, but for me it was no worse than another insult.
I don’t think I was a bad person, and I don’t think pewdiepie is a bad person. But good people can do shitty things. People are complicated. We like to villainize people and pretend the word can be split into sides with the decent folks on one side and evil monsters on the other side, but the world rarely works like that.
But I do think that PewDiePie is old enough, and should be socially conscious enough to understand that he shouldn’t have done that. If you’re 27, and especially if you’re fucking famous, there’s really no excuse for that.
And keep in mind, not sure if you know this, but this isn’t the first time he’s been caught dropping the N word. He’s just a privileged white kid that thinks edgy jokes are funny and has been constantly validated for his entire adult life so he never actually had to grow up. Or at least that’s my speculation.
literally nothing in life matters other than being kind and being funny
A Love Letter
For all its shortcomings towards the end of its run, xxxHOLiC still holds a special place in my heart.
If you’re not familiar with it, xxxHOLiC is a manga series written and illustrated by CLAMP, a prolific, all-female group of Japanese manga artists who have been creating since the mid-eighties. (Their body of work includes classics such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Angelic Layer, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle.)
The story follows Watanuki Kimihiro, a high school student who strikes a deal with a witch. If he becomes her assistant, she’ll take away the power that leaves him plagued with visions of ghosts and monsters. But because it’s such a big wish, he’ll have to work for her for…a while. Maybe forever. So he becomes the witch’s cook, maid, and errand-boy, all wrapped up in one.
Although it runs parallel to and intersects with other CLAMP stories, xxxHOLiC stands fully on its own as a horror story about desire and addiction. The series consists of short arcs and one-shots, each centering on a particular customer – both average humans and fantastic spirits. Like Watanuki, each has a wish. Like Watanuki, each must pay a price. Sometimes the cost is as simple as a lock of hair, but other times it wreaks catastrophe on the rest of their life. Thus each customer’s story becomes an exploration of different aspects of desire – addiction to social media, academic ambitions, the desire to see a loved one again – and the effects it can have on one’s life.
There are many lovely things about this manga: the gorgeous art style, Watanuki’s temper tantrums, the pervasive creepiness. But the best part is the witch, Yuuko. Not only is she a total troll with a wicked sense of style, she is constantly dropping truth bombs:
Yuuko and xxxHOLiC were hella formative for me.

Aphrodite and I
We aren’t friends.
She is the mother who wants to shape me,
Who wants to put me into shapes
I do not want to be shaped by.
Aphrodite stands with the back to me
Flowing silk reach until the ground,
Shining hair artfully twirled up,
And over her bare shoulders I see them:
Couples created after her ideal —
Lovers in love —
And I catch a glimpse
Of the love I cannot understand.
Aphrodite despises me,
For I,
I do not understand her love.
And her son, Amor, hates me
For every arrow breaks against my heart.
So Amor sits on my shoulder, like a watchdog sent by her
When I walk hand in hand with my best friend
And press a goodbye kiss to her cheek
Or when I run my hand through another friend’s hair
And Amor asks: Not more?
When Aphrodite blessed us with love,
Hestia cradled me in her arms too long
Showed me a home and
told me I was complete.
When Aphrodite split our hearts in half,
Artemis took me in before Aphrodite could,
And taught me how to love
with my heart intact.
Aphrodite and I.
We arent friends.
She is a monument of human desires
Created from the ideal of a tangible fantasy
Which promises a solution to the
Insecurities of life.
Love like I want you to, she says
And you will be happy.
Love like I have taught you to, she says
And you will be healed.
I know that love cannot heal.
Love cannot make me feel less broken for
She is the voice that tries to convince me
That I am broken,
That I am incomplete
She is the chain that wraps around my neck,
Delicate and beautiful,
And strangles me
For daring to be different,
For daring to think I am complete on my own.
She is the monster
That sharpens her claws on my heart,
Hoping for it to crack
And to break in half but instead,
Her claws turn dull,
For I,
I am not a child Aphrodite’s.
I was born from the warmth of Hestia’s hearth,
And raised with the faith of Artemis’ virgins.
Aphrodite and I.
We aren’t friends.
For I,
I do not need her.

Too nice not to reblog.
It’s not just the problem of rounded shoulders and chins jutting forward that you’d expect from staring at screens in every waking moment — posture affects your whole body. “When the whole top of the body is forward, the butt has to stick out, then the calves get tight, and you’re out of whack,” says Charleene O’Connor, a postural alignment and muscle biomechanics specialist. So, how can you whip yourself back into shape?
