Something huge is happening in Québec and it's going to impact all of Canada, as well as countless other places. Interligne, the country's only LGBTQ+ 24/7 hotline, with professional staff all around the clock, is facing a colossal defunding from the government, which will lead to the night service closing soon if nothing is done. The new Québec government decided to withdraw their funds a couple years back, because apparently Interligne is not a mental health service anymore, but a "sexuality and gender diversity" service -I don't think I need to comment on this distinction, specifically the fact that it lead to financial support being dropped.

I work at the hotline as a volunteer and let me tell you that people are going to die from this. Queer people need access to our services at night, when they are the most vulnerable. We get about 30 000 calls a year (we peaked at 50 000 in 2020, and we're projecting a 30% increase yearly from now on), which represents about 10% of the traffic that 811, the national info-social hotline gets (it's worth noting 811 keeps referring people to us because they don't have the resources to help queer people) -and they have teams in every province and territory. We only have the one. A third of these calls happen at night. Statistically, suicidal ideation, self-harm risks, domestic and sexual violence are more likely to happen at night: this is when people need us. We also get calls from all around the world, since we are one of the only queer hotlines with professionals available 24/7, especially through the online chat. In the time I've been there, I've talked to people from the rest of Canada, France, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Burundi. We've even recently started a partnership that will allow us to access translators when needed, so that we can serve more people who need it. For the international queer people who rely on us, it's crucial that we can be available around the clock. (I take this opportunity to say that please, don't hesitate to use Interligne if you need help.)

Basically, we're hoping to put pressure on the government by launching a mediatic campaign now, as people are preparing for the Québec elections. They are many ways you can help:

-By donating

-By ordering a very cool pin to help spread the word

-By leaving a message of support that might be displayed on our website to highlight the importance of the night service

-By spreading the word on social media

Here's the link: https://interligne (dot) co/en/interligne-saves-lives/

(Replaced the dot with (dot) just in case, if you can make the link clickable that'd be awesome).

If you live in Québec, don't forget to demand accountability from the party you vote for! They cannot keep denying their responsibility in this. If they refuse to take a stand, the blood of queer people will be on their hands.

Read this regarding the OSC ruling: "The decision still leaves the onus on an accused to come up with expert and other evidence to prove they were in a state of automatism to raise the intoxication defence successfully, Zwibel said. Simply claiming to have been drunk wouldn't cut it." from a cp24 article dated June 4th. Sharing this because I'm concerned about people experiencing stress and being re-traumatized over misunderstanding.

From a member of the Feminist NDP Facebook Group:

I’m sharing this information about the Chan / Sullivan decisions in hopes of clarifying some misinformation before this gets out of hand: Friends, a lot of you are very angry about this news. And you’d be right to… if any of it were true.

This is an example of outrageously unethical reporting by CP24, because this headline is NOT AT ALL what the Court of Appeal decision says. Intoxication is not a defense to violence. It wasn’t before, and this doesn’t change that. Both the Chan & Sullivan decisions are about situations where someone became intoxicated in a way that was not their fault (one guy took some prescription meds that affected him in a bad way, causing him to attack his family).

If you sexually assault someone while drunk, you’re still criminally responsible. This has not changed. The fact that CP24 makes it sound like this has somehow changed is an effort to make activists angry about something that isn’t even true. It’s wildly irresponsible reporting. (Shout-out to Windsor grad @Sara Little for her succinct tweets).

TORONTO — Jill Andrew, the Official Opposition Women’s Issues critic, is urging the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General to appeal an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that makes voluntary intoxication a legitimate defense in sexual assault and violent crime cases.
“It is already incredibly difficult for survivors of sexual assault to come forward, and to get the justice they deserve for the heinous crimes committed against them,” said Andrew. “Anything that makes it even more difficult for survivors of sexual assault and violent crimes to get that justice is a painful step backwards.”
Andrew said the Ontario Court of Appeal decision flies in the face of some of the progress made by the #MeToo movement.
“The NDP is strongly urging an appeal, so a higher court can weigh the impact this decision may have on the lives of women, trans women and sex workers, their bodies, and the justice they deserve after surviving sexual assault or violence.”

This account posted the same IG Live I posted that proved we got attacked at the protest for no reason. Translation:

“THIS IS PROOF THAT THE POLICE ATTACKED FIRST WITHOUT ANY REASON.

“WE ON THE FRONT WERE TRYING TO SPEAK TO THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO CLAIMED TO UNDERSTAND OUR CAUSE; WE ASKED THEM POLITELY TO KNEEL ON THE FLOOR AT THE SAME TIME AS US SO THEY COULD PROVE THEY WERE TRULY WITH US; UNFORTUNATELY, THEY REFUSED; THEY THEN PUT THEIR KNEES ON THE FLOOR; THEN WE CELEBRATED THEN WE RECEIVED TEAR GAS BOMBS; WE HAD IN NO WAY ATTACKED THE POLICE, WE WERE ATTACKED BY THEM, AND THE MEDIA HIDES IT, WE WANT PEACE AND ONLY PEACE.”

Please share this. Please don’t let Canadian and specifically Montreal police forces’ violence hide.

  1. brooklyn bail fund
  2. minnesota freedom fund
  3. atlanta action network
  4. columbus freedom fund
  5. louisville community bail fund
  6. chicago bond

turn off your adblocker and put the video on repeat. do not skip ads. let it play on loop whether you’re listening or not. mute the tab if you need to focus elsewhere. but let. it. play.
youtube will donate to blm for you.

please, please reblog. for people who don’t have money to spare, this is incredibly important information to have.

ways to help protestors if you are unable to protest

everybody has to do their part. as a reference, this was posted on 1 june 2020. if any links are broken or direct to a place they should not, please feel free to add on with corrections. if there is new information with better knowledge, please feel free to share. thank you.

1. donate

do not donate to shaun king. he has repeatedly collected money to “support” black people, but no one knows where the money is.

BAIL FUNDS (ALPHABETICAL ORDER; NOT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST)

note: washington dc and new jersey have cashless bail systems.
  1. bail fund google doc (also includes lawyers for protestors)
  2. national bail fund network (directory of community bail funds)
  3. community bail funds masterpost by @keplercryptids
  4. resistance funds (google sheets; lists bail funds around the country)
  5. nationwide bail funds (split a donation to the bail funds listed on the linked page with a single transaction)
  6. atlanta bail fund
  7. brooklyn bail fund
  8. colorado freedom fund
  9. columbus freedom fund
  10. houston chapter of black lives matter
  11. liberty fund (nyc based; focuses services on people from low-income communities)
  12. los angeles freedom fund
  13. louisville community fund
  14. massachusetts bail fund
  15. minnesota freedom fund (as of may 30, 2020, they are encouraging people to donate elsewhere since they have raised enough money; as of may 29, 2020, they do not have a venmo, as some fraudulent accounts have been claiming, source)
  16. philadelphia bail out fund
  17. richmond bail fund

MORE PLACES TO DONATE

note: more links are listed in the masterposts below.
  1. northstar health collective (healthcare and medical aid for people on the front lines)
  2. reclaim the block (aims to redistribute police funding to help the minneapolis community)
  3. twin cities dsa (provides fresh groceries and hot meals to people in minneapolis)

2. educate yourself

it isn’t enough to sign petitions and reblog/retweet/etc. nonblack people, including people of color, owe it to black people to educate themselves and correct themselves and the people around them on anti-blackness.

note: more links are in the masterposts linked below.
  1. resources and tools regarding racism and anti-blackness (google sheets compilation)
  2. readings on society, racism, the prison system, etc. (twitter thread)
  3. “where do we go after ferguson?” by michael eric dyson
  4. official black lives matter website

3. give out supplies to protestors

people need supplies to protest safely, and even if they bring supplies with them, they can often run out. if you’re able, stock up and hand them out to people protesting. for more supplies to donate, see the “george floyd action” google docs link in section 5.

  1. water bottles (dehydration and heatstroke are not things people should have to deal with alongside bastard cops. if the police in your area are particularly violent or known to use tear gas, get the ones with the sports cap/suction-thing/etc so people can use them as emergency eye-flushes.)
  2. snacks (make sure to take into account that people have allergies of all sorts. foods will have a little label that says “may contain” and then list any potential allergens. write the allergens on the ziploc (or any container you use) in permanent marker, or better yet, write the snacks included in the pack.)
  3. masks (don’t forget there’s still a pandemic going on. also it will aid in deterring facial recognition when the police try to track down protestors,  also part two, if the cops use tear gas, wearing a mask (with the combination of a scarf or bandana) will lessen the adverse effects. lessen, not stop.)
  4. bandanas, scarves, etc. and goggles (ski goggles, swimming goggles, etc.) (see above for explanation on the scarves. same goes for the goggles. anti–tear gas and anti–facial recognition.)
  5. clean shirts (for people who are heavily gassed. also helps deter recognition through clothing.)
  6. wound care supplies (band-aids, packets of neosporin packets or a similar antibiotic, alcohol wipes, etc.; if you can, decant bactine into those little travel bottles.)
  7. a sharpie or another type of marker (for writing bail numbers or emergency contacts on arms, hands, etc. it’s not enough to have your city’s bail fund number stored on your phone; the police won’t give it to you to look it up. give people a marker so they can write it down, preferably not washable so it isn’t easily removed.)

IMPORTANT: KNOWING FIRST AID

tear gas: if you’re hit, get out as fast and as soon as you can. take anyone you can with you. the longer you’re in the gas, the harder it will be for you to see, and it can irritate your airways, making it hard to breathe. if you’re hit, don’t run; it’ll only make things worse on your lungs. when you leave the area, take a cold shower. don’t use hot water (it will only reactivate the agent); don’t bathe (it will only spread the CS around). (source 1) (source 2) (cdc fact sheet on tear gas)

  1. move them to a clean and ventilated area where it’s as safe as possible.
  2. ask them if they’re wearing contact lenses. have them remove it. if they’re wearing glasses, rinse it with water.
  3. solution of half liquid antacid, half water. spray from the inside going out, with the head tilted back and slightly towards the side being rinsed. if they say it’s okay, open the eye slightly while doing this. (source)

bullet wounds: the most important thing is to stop the bleeding. be sure to check for an exit wound and cover that as well. treat both wounds, but treat the worse one first.

  1. stop the bleed (youtube video by uc san diego health)
  2. first aid in active shooting scenarios
  3. making a tourniquet (a commercial tourniquet is best, but improvised ones can work as well if done properly; the most important things to remember is that tourniquets are for limb injuries and are not meant for the head or torso and that they have to be very tightly wound on the injury.)
  4. how to apply pressure dressings

miscellaneous

  1. adult cpr tutorial (youtube video by cincinnati children’s; think of “staying alive” by the beegees or “uptown funk”)

4. be a source of information

be responsible with this. people’s lives are at stake. that being said, the media is a fucking joke and the best way to get accurate information in a grassroots rebellion is amongst ourselves. record everything, but if you are going to share any information at all, be sure to blur people’s faces.

  1. signal (encrypted messenger app; messages delete after x amount of time): app store | google play
  2. tool for scrubbing metadata from images and selectively blurring identifiable features
  3. tech tips to protect yourself while protesting (by rey.nbows on tiktok, via vicent_efl on twitter)
  4. cop spotting 101 (google docs)
  5. know your rights (by personachuu on twitter)

NUMBERS TO CALL FOR ARRESTED PROTESTORS (ALPHABETICAL ORDER; SOURCES LINKED TO THE NUMBER)

remember to keep phones OFF unless absolutely necessary. cell phone towers, stingrays, location notifs can all be used to track you and other protestors. don’t fuck around. if your phone must be on, keep it on airplane mode as often as possible and only communicate using encrypted methods. no, snapchat doesn’t count. (a twitter thread on stingrays, for those interested)

  1. masterpost of petitions to sign, numbers to call, places to donate, and more (carrd by dehyedration on twitter)
  2. #blacklivesmatter (google docs by ambivaIcnt on twitter; includes information on relevant events, other masterposts, lists of petitions and donation links, how to protest safely and protests to go to, and more)

While people are inclined to whip out their phones and film when they see something alarming happening, those videos are not always recorded in a way that can be used as evidence in a legal proceeding or to support advocacy tactics.

At the human rights organization WITNESS, where I work as the senior U.S. program coordinator, we’ve learned that video has a greater chance of making an impact when it’s filmed ethically and strategically, and released in coordination with advocacy and legal efforts. Using the camera in your pocket can be a valuable way to ensure the world bears witness to abusive policing and systemic racism, help hold authorities accountable, and advocate for the real safety of our communities.

Teen Vogue still hitting it out of the park, I see.

HOLY SHIT. This was extremely informative. Please everyone READ THIS!!!

PSAC’s bargaining teams are declaring impasse after the Liberal government failed to make substantial progress towards a new contract. Teams representing 90,000 public service workers met with government officials from April 30 to May 2.
“PSAC members are incredibly disappointed and frustrated that, after almost a year of talks, the government squandered this critical opportunity to negotiate a fair contract for public service workers before the House rises for the federal election,” said Chris Aylward, PSAC National President. “We’ve been left with no choice but to declare impasse and start the process that will lead to strike preparations.”
Rather than focusing on making quick progress at the table, the government waited two days to present what it claimed to be a comprehensive package of proposals. While some proposals, taken alone, leaned in the right direction, these were contingent on the union agreeing to unacceptable contract concessions.
After three years of the Phoenix nightmare, PSAC will not return to the table until the government shows a genuine willingness to deliver the fair deal our members deserve.
Falling short on pay and retro
The Trudeau government’s offer of 1.5 per cent in each year of four years falls well below the rate of inflation and short of the nearly 2 per cent pay raise given to Members of Parliament on May 1. Also, the government wants workers to wait for up to 18 months after the new contract is signed to receive retroactive pay. The current retro pay implementation period is 5 months.
Concessions on mental health and child care, resistance on breastfeeding breaks
The government is also insisting on dissolving the existing Memorandum of Understanding on mental health (MOU) and refusing the union’s proposals to replace it with an updated framework, putting at risk years of joint progress on this issue. Moreover, the government is refusing to implement recommendations stemming from a previous child care MOU, and is resisting our proposal to allow nursing women breastfeeding breaks. These positions are at odds with the Liberals’ claimed feminist agenda and the right to breastfeed in the Canada Labour Code.
“PSAC made it clear over the last few months that this bargaining session was Trudeau’s last chance to restore a respectful relationship with public service workers—as he promised to do back in 2015,” added Aylward. “If he’s not willing to make this right before the next election, I know PSAC members won’t forget it when they head to the ballot box.”
PSAC had previously declared bargaining impasse in December, following the government’s insulting offer of a two-year wage freeze but agreed to return to the table to give Trudeau ample opportunity to make things right.
PSAC remains committed to achieving a new contract that improves work-life balance, strengthens job security, closes wage gaps with the private sector, and ensures fair economic increases.
The bargaining sessions covered four bargaining units under Treasury Board: Program & Administrative Services (PA), Technical Services (TC), Operations Services (SV), and Education & Library Science (EB).

I think the important thing for Non-Canadians to know about Trudeau’s SNC Lavalain Scandal

Is that it by itself would not be enough to seriously damage Trudeau’s brand. I know I see some Americans going on that this scandal seems tame by comparison to what Trump is doing.

This ignores context.

The reason this scandal is hitting Trudeau so hard is because it is the final straw for a lot of people (and particularly progressives who voted for him because he campaigned on the left in the 2015 election) who have felt continually betrayed by his government. This government explicitly ran on a campaign in 2015 of avoiding the corruption and cronyism of the previous Conservative government.

This SNC Scandal does not exist in a vacuum, and this is not the only bad thing Trudeau has been doing. Its just that the American media has rarely reported on anything controversial this man has done in power over these past 4 years.

Since 2015, Justin Trudeau has claimed to be a climate leader while approving and buying oil pipelines, he has claimed to be an ally to Indigenous people while suing them in court and steam rolling over their rights with industrial projects, he claimed to want to fix Canada’s electoral system then at the last moment decided partisan politics was more important to him than a major promise he made, he said he would be on the side of Organized Labour and then he legislated Canada Post workers back to work and ignored pensioners who lost everything when Sears folded, He has claimed to be supportive of Human Rights but has defended selling billions of weapons to Saudi Arabia, he said he would be the ‘anti-Harper’ candidate than he maintained the Harper Government’s mandatory minimums, health care transfer cuts and weak climate targets.

And now with this SNC scandal it throws his entire 2015 election pitch that he would run an open, democratic government that would avoid corruption and the influence of giant corporation’s ability to lobby government’s, as has plagued both the Liberal and Conservative governments over the past couple of decades.

People really need to see the big picture here. This scandal paints Trudeau as no better than Harper or Chretien when it comes to appeasing corporations and the 1% over working people, and when compacted with his other questionable decisions over these 4 years invalidates his entire reason he ran for office in 2015. He has become the cynical politician who he campaigned against.

Winter has come early to Montreal, and the dropping temperatures have the city’s homeless shelters already at capacity.
The cold weather has prompted shelters to begin their winter protocol ahead of schedule, providing additional beds and staff to help with the influx of clients.
“We’re Montrealers. We know winter is coming, but it seems to have arrived earlier than we’re accustomed to,” Old Brewery Mission CEO Matthew Pearce said on CBC Montreal’s Daybreak.
The wind chill left the city feeling like –27 as the sun rose Thursday morning.
For those spending the night on the streets, the frigid weather can prove fatal.
The mission is seeking donations of warm clothing such as coats, boots, gloves, scarves and socks as well as cash donations which are eligible for tax receipts.
Clothing can be dropped off at the mission’s main pavilion. Cash donations can be made in person and online.

In a 1970s experiment, a Stanford psychologist and 7 other mentally healthy participants got themselves admitted to 12 different psychiatric hospitals across the US by pretending to hear voices. Once inside, they began acting normally, but all 12 hospitals diagnosed each of them with disorders, forced them to take drugs, and required them all to admit they had a disease before they could be released. This was the study ‘being sane in insane places’ by David Rosenhan. The purpose of the study was to determine whether or not the staff of asylums could truly determine a person’s sanity after being admitted.

Rosenhan ans his colleagues did not pretend to hear voices, they pretended to hear a ‘hollow thud’- something with no basis in psychology. From the get go they were offering the doctors and nurses a chance to deny them entry, but despite the fact that the thing they were faking wasn’t even a real symptom, they were all admitted.

That very day, the moment of their admission, they went back to acting normal. They went about their day as normally as possible, and waited to see if the staff of each hospital they were in would notice. They stopped reporting hearing the noise that got them admitted.

The staff never noticed.

Some of the patients did.

Despite this, all of them were eventually released, but none were declared sane on release. Some were in the hospital for 2 weeks, one remained for over 50 days.

What the study proved was that it became impossible to establish sane from insane in the setting of a mental hospital. To retest, after Rosenhan came forward with his findings, he told asylums all over the nation that they’d be doing the experiment again, but with more participants this time. After a certain period, he would ask the head doctors of the ‘targeted’ asylums which patients they believed were faking it.

All of the hospitals reported at least one person.

No one was actually sent in.

This reiterated the original claim, proving for all that the perception of sanity is reliant on location and societal standards.
