Vikings 5x09 (A Simple Story)

Thoughts.

The title of the episode is “A Simple Story”. Nah, it’s a damn mess of a story. Are they just trolling us with these titles? I’m not even joking. And the tagline for this mess of a half-season was “Who will rise?” But I think a better question is “Who will turn on who?” And another even better question is “who among us will still be watching for 5B?”

But we’re all here for now, for whatever reason, so let’s just jump in.

The Adventures of Bjorn Ironside: I haven’t heard his new wife speak since she threatened to chew his balls like a reindeer’s. Just an observation.

Somewhere in Norway: After the crushing defeat, Hvitserk has a plan! Ask Uncle Rollo for help. Ivar agrees and Hvitserk then teleports to Francia because by the next day he’s back with troops. What? If Odin walks around, announcing deaths, then Hvitserk can teleport. It’s not even the thing that makes the least amount of sense on this show.

In the background one can sense that Harald is regretting even letting Ivar sail into his harbor. Though he does seem pleased that the Franks will be coming to support them … even though he HATED ROLLO last season.

But details! As Ivar says, all this shit just suits everyone for now … for the moment … until it doesn’t … but for now it does. So yeah.

#teamlagertha: Somehow a shieldmaiden brings word that the Franks are joining with Ivar and Harald … and she didn’t even have to go through a horrifying sexual assault and pregnancy like her predecessor Astrid.

Elsewhere, Bishop Heahmund is just dying to switch sides. He flirts with Lagertha, and in many ways reminds me of how Ivar was taken in with him just a few episodes back. He says he thinks of her as an equal, wants to learn from her, is fascinated by her. His eyes light up at the sight of her. He seems grateful to be alive and Lagertha asks him why he wouldn’t rather be in heaven.

“I love god,” he says, “but i also love life.”

And you’ll forgive me if I get the next exchange wrong because I couldn’t stop laughing. HEAHMUND LOVES LIFE Y’ALL. Doesn’t he just … exude that? HEAHMUND LOVIN’ LIFE. Enjoying the little things. Like ridiculously attractive Vikings.

Lagertha seems amused. LAGERTHA IS US. She asks him what about life he loves so damn much … as he just seem like such a ray of sunshine.

“Its joy,” he replies. (HAHAHAHAHAHA) … “it’s pain,” he continues (okay, now THAT I believe).

When Lagertha asks him if he loves both men and women, Heahmund tells us once and for all that he LOVES WOMEN. And with his eyes he’s implying that he LOVES TO FUCK WOMEN.

Lagertha is like OH REALLY? It just so happens that our gods encourage loving each other.

And again, Heahmund is left with a question he’s been wondering aloud lately. “Why didn’t you kill me?”

Lagertha doesn’t really have an answer for him but I think it’s finally starting to dawn on Heahmund that people like to keep him around because he’s pretty. I’m not sure where the show is going with this, but the man did get on his knees and pledge his life to the queen. He claimed to know her all his life. She’s his moon and stars. And eventually all the eye-fucking seems to lead to actual fucking.

Awww.

I can’t imagine Ivar would be too happy about that. What with the whole “you can count on me, Ivar.”

But at this point, I really don’t care. I’m not sure what Ivar has done as of late to inspire anyone to stay loyal to him. And this is coming from an unabashed Ivar stan.

Also, Ubbe is so totally over Margrethe. He loves Torvi now, for reasons, I know not. He says he married too young, he didn’t know any better. To which I’m like, TOO YOUNG? LIKE A MAAAYBE A YEAR AGO? Seriously, is each episode a year? A month? I simply cannot gauge this by judging how long their voyages are, as they obviously apparate to different locals instantly. I do not understand. Ubbe is some seasoned love-veteran now?

And why is this sudden switch that Ubbe has to Torvi reminding me of when Bjorn did the exact some thing with her?

And finally, from Kattegat, Margrethe has reached full-on villain-status as she’s now intentionally being scary and cruel to children. What the fuck ever. Moving on.

#teamivar: Ivar’s plan is renewed with Rollo’s support. Somehow a Frankish army showed up (THEY APPARATED OKAY?) and Ivar and his bro have sudden command of a whole new army, free of charge, except one thing. Don’t kill Bjorn.

Ivar then tries to kills Bjorn and Harald is like NAH MAN THIS IS NOT OUR WAY WTF. And I’m like … really? Or has your character just been made more sympathetic this season? Because I remember you being kind of a sociopathic ruthless asshole up until very recently, but whatever. Sudden hidden depths, I guess.

Ivar is like … ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ fine. It was worth a try.

And I go cry over my WIP as my OC would have obviously dumped this guy weeks ago.

Spanglo-Saxons: In solitary contemplation, King Athewulf asks how he can deliver his people from the heathens. As a wasp stings him and dies on a page of a book depicting Mary, she silently says WELL YOU CAN DIE BRAH. A BEE ALLERGY IN THE MIDDLE AGES. So that your wise and pragmatic son can rule, as he’s the only one that can beat those dudes. A mind that can rival Ivar’s. Ragnar’s son, and Athelstan’s.

Man … can you imagine? Taken out by a bee.

And I mean, I know that actual history has never been especially respected around these parts but Aethelred abdicating to Alfred kind of made my mind explode a little.

Poor Aethelred. My heart went out to the guy. His mother basically told him he wasn’t fit to be king, conspired against him, offered Heahmund’s position to another dude and in the end, Aethelred was the one to make the final decision.

Aethered, sweetie, you deserved better.

How many people have I said that about on this show?

Meanwhile in Floki-land: You know, I can watch humans slaughter each other all day, but you show me an innocent animal being killed? Sacrificed for Thor?

I CANT.

You think Thor would want you to kill animals for him? Nah.

He’d basically tell everyone on this show …

And the very last scene that interwove the Cain/Abel moment on Ass-gard in Floki’s Eden, with Alfred being crowned and Heahmund being … I don’t know, Viking-knighted? It could have been a beautiful moment if everything leading up to it hadn’t been such a fucking mess.

The Vikings are being ripped apart internally while England seemingly comes together to crown a new king. But it’s brother against brother errrrrywhere. Bul the Dog and Abel, Ragnar’s sons, Aethelred and Alfred. And then there is a parting shot of Athelwulf watching over, the bee dying on the page while the Virgin Mary, Judith, and Lagertha, spin men’s fates.

Death predictions for mid-season finale: Athelwulf kinda surprised me. I knew he’d go, and soon, but it was still a surprise. So … well done, I guess. But I’m still betting on Gunther, Astrid, and Margrethe. Someone on #teamlagertha has to go down in order to get all those sad reaction shots from everyone in the previews. But I could be wrong!

Final thoughts: Sigh. I’ve watched this show from the beginning. There’s always been something compelling behind it even though there’s aspects that were … nonsensical. Problematic. But yet it was compelling. It had a formula that worked somehow, one of those things where the good outweighed the bad, well, most of the time. I stopped watching for awhile after Athelstan’s death but it wasn’t because it pissed me off, it was more like, after Athelstan was gone, I was bored. After this episode I feel kind of the same way. I’m not pissed off about Ragnar’s death, but the ghosts of better characters haunted this episode. Ragnar is always floating around, reminding us that Travis was able to save a lot of this show with his magnetism, Rollo haunted us by not even showing up. Ecbert haunted us with his empty crown set on a table, having never fit very well on the head of his son. Athelstan haunted us by winning the game of thrones in the afterlife as his son was finally declared king.

And I take a look at who’s left and I don’t even know. I’ve always loved Lagertha and I continue to, but in a lot of ways she’s tasked with carrying this show because everyone else from her day, even Floki, is gone. And it’s too great a burden to bear, especially with what’s being written for her. And then my other two favorites, ivar and Ubbe, I hate to admit it, but they’re just disappointing. Ubbe comes off as weak and Ivar comes off as a fucking brat. The strength and cunning that he had been building all season was completely undermined last week with his inexplicable lack of foresight. You could say that infatuation with Heahmund clouded his mind, or his hyper-fixation on killing Lagertha, or the fact that you can’t win them all, but it wasn’t actually any of that. It was only a tactic used to up the stakes for next week. That’s the only reason. And it’s so damn transparent. But that kind of thing only works when IT MAKES SENSE.

I’m guessing that next week SOMEONE will turn. It could be totally predictable. Or not. And if it’s not predictable, if it’s a surprise, I’m not confident that it’ll be because of brilliant writing, but because of something that doesn’t make any sense. Will it be Halfdan? Astrid? Hvitserk? Rollo? Heahmund? Or even Harald?

Someone is gonna switch but I can’t say I really care who rises.

I love this, in a beautiful way it’s only half there and kinda ethereal, which is as it should be since the legends and theories about Arthur are many but there’s not a lot of certainty.

Wasn’t quite such good weather the day I was there - which meant my photos have a very different atmosphere!

It’s not just that he is ethereal, but that he is a part of the land, and the land is part of him.

London's amazing underground infrastructure revealed in vintage cutaway maps

Londonist’s roundup of cutaway maps – many from the outstanding Transport Museum in Covent Garden – combines the nerdy excitement of hidden tunnels with the aesthetic pleasure of isomorophic cutaway art, along with some interesting commentary on both the development of subterranean tunnels and works and the history of representing the built environment underground in two-dimension artwork.

@isitandwonder   Tunnels! :))))

Oh these are wonderful!!

Austrian photographer Inge Prader recently recreated Gustav Klimt’s masterworks for Style Bible, a part of the Life Ball Charity Event in Vienna, Austria.  A team of over 50 professionals worked on the demanding photography project which raises funds to help those with HIV/AIDS.  Makeup artists, costume designers, set designers, lighting specialists and many others worked with models and fully ornamented props to bring to life the fascinating, erotically charged work that Klimt is known for during his “Golden Phase.”

Back in middle school, my friends and I used a very simple coded language for writing secret messages. I saw some posts about needing to hide one’s beliefs from partners/bosses/parents so I wanted to share it with you! These would also be great to incorporate into sigils since they are simple lines and dots.

confession: in the Russian alphabet, the letter х is pronounced like a hard h so whenever I see a phrase like “Sorry for your loss xoxo”, instead of hugs and kisses my brain always briefly interprets it as  "Sorry for your loss HOHOHO" like some jolly Santa Schadenfreude laughter there
