While he usually carries himself with grace at every crook and turn, it all falls to shambles as he notices the familiar green and yellow jacket of Chie Satonaka. He can hardly ever string together a coherent sentence without a hint of a stutter and he’s always so damned red in the face (it’s embarrassing, especially when people always point it out to him).

And today – of course – isn’t an exception much to his chagrin.

“Ch-Chie-san,” he takes a brief pause to suck in a breath and smile almost sheepishly, crossing his arms across his chest in attempt to look more confident than he feels. “What are you doing? Uh… training again?” How cool.

Chie didn’t often need a reason to train, but it helped that the weather was the perfect excuse for it. With the temperature rising and the days dragging out, to her, outside by the floodplains was the only place to be!

Gently tapping her toes against the grassy surface, she properly secures a loose shoe before leaning over to sweep up a bottle of chilled water. The girl’s long lost track of time, and yet can’t quite bring herself to check-- Too caught up in the moment to turn in whilst the sun’s still going strong. And on the way back up, her gaze is abruptly met with that of a familiar somebody. Inaba’s very own basketball hero. Though there’s a brief hint of surprise there, it’s a quick recovery on her part. “Yo, Ichijou-kun! Hey!”

Without a second thought, Chie’s gone ahead and pressed the bottle to her own cheek, welcoming the cooling sensation it provides. “Mhm, you bet...! You know, I really can’t stand being cooped up indoors, sooo... I guess I’m actually here a lot. Eheh-” She admits.

Image

“But, gosh, what a day, huh? I feel like I’m being slow cooked or somethin’. It’s good to see you, though! Meeting up with somebody?” Or... maybe that was a little on the nosy side. Whoops.

-]– ;; Those ill spoken words momentarily roused the fighter within. Stubbornly would his will bust away from the cold, unforgiving clutches of fear’s incarnate. This couldn’t be the way for their venture to end, it’s hardly been a solid five minutes after it began!

“Satonaka!!”

His booming tone would cascade the force of his vibrant persona. For a instant, those souls fouled by contempt and darkness wouldn’t be veering their ethereal hunger their direction.

“It’s all over once we allow those thoughts to consume our actions.”

Image

“To take this path, we’re going to have to grow like at extents we’ve never done before!” Triple the effort required on top of that, or else their spines would never stop shaking. In a world warped by their resolute spirits, momentarily did a emerald shine spark around the modern day samurai. “If we aim to seal these fears once and for all. To shoot cocky smiles right back at them, we’re going to need teamwork to draw this wish fromt he depths of desire, to reality!”

Plain and simple, Chie just wasn’t made for ghost hunting. These legs of steel were built purely for the purpose of kicking bad guys and defending the innocent, not for warding off evil spirits!

Every so often, her thoughts would turn to those who had exited the building before them, and how little their horrified expressions had inspired confidence. But Sanageyama was having none of that, apparently. He’s always been so good with words. Had a knack for driving a little encouragement into every one of them, when the time called for it. Chie knows he’s as stubborn as she is, and wouldn’t bet on him giving up for a second after a speech like that.

The cure for a fear: face it head on. Or so they say. Of course the Chariot pauses to consider what he’s getting at, but it’s just not as moving when you’re already neck deep in the fear itself. “Okay, okay! K-keep your voice down, will you? Who knows what’s listening in on us... Wait- What am I even saying!? There’s no one here but us, right? YEP! Sounds right to me!” A bout of nervous laughter spills from her.

image

“A-Anyway! The guy at the door said that there’s supposed to be, like, only one exit at the very end. Which means the more we talk, the longer we stay. S-so less talkin’ and more walkin’ already!”

✠ our muses watching the stars together

Finer details regarding Penny’s life before her visit remained a bit of a mystery to Chie. So it seemed that she had swooped in out of nowhere at times. Then again, a lot of people who’ve only ever known a life in Inaba must’ve felt that way whenever someone new passed through.

“I hope my parents aren’t too mad when I get back. They don’t usually like me staying out late, unless I’m safe and sound at Yukiko’s place.” She lifted her chin to admire the night sky, hands rubbing together for warmth. And soon memories of an earlier round of questions came flooding back. Not once had Chie met anyone so eager to learn more about this town. In fact, after a tempting taste of city life stories, most people here would search for opportunities elsewhere. Unlike them, however, she loved her life here, despite being quick to run out of things to list.

“Hmmm, well, there’s really nothing much to this place. But, I guess if I had to say something, then… There’s this one store that sells the most deeeeeelicious steak croquettes in the whole world-! Uh, actually, I dunno about the whole world, but it’s definitely delicious!”
“The people here are nice… And, umm, there’s the Amagi Inn, which is kind of a big deal. And something about pottery I think we’re supposed to be famous for. The stars are nice at night, too! So bright and amazing. I think that’s something a lot of people comment on. Like, the one difference between living in a big busy city and, well, someplace like this, I guess.”

Intrigued by it all, yet the stars were what lit up her friend’s whole face. It was only fair to comply with those wishes, when Penny asked to go stargazing.

“Oh, hey! Look at those-” Darting a hand upwards to point at a particular set, Chie dragged her finger through the air and drew invisible lines. “That kinda looks like a ball with legs, doesn’t it?”

Yosuke’s sure most girls his age wouldn’t hesitate to agree with him.  He has to wonder if they’re even looking at the same animal.  The dog was large enough to be a little intimidating, desperately in need of a bath, and noisy.  It even ate kind of loudly.

Image

“Only if you have a really strange definition of the word.  Look at it.  It slobbers when it eats.”

The dog doesn’t appear to have a collar, so it was impossible to tell if it had an owner or not.  With it being as cold as it is, he wonders if it’ll be ok outside.  He’d probably feel guilty if something bad happened to it.  However, he’s uninterested in taking the mutt with him (or even touch the thing), and he doubts that’ll go over well with his parents.

“If you’re really that worried about him, you could always take him.  Your folks like dogs.”

Yosuke’s not about to reject the invitation to go get something to eat even though he’s sure that he’ll end up footing the bill.  Then again, it seems like Chie’s in a good mood.  She didn’t hit him all that hard.

“I just came from there, so going back would be weird.  How about Souzai Daigaku?”

“Oh yeah? Well I’ll bet you’d be just as bad if you went without eating anything for a while.”

image

How very like Yosuke, she thought to herself. With him being such a hit with the ladies and all, of course the first thing he’d struggle to see past was the dog’s tattered appearance. UGH, BOYS.

“And duh. Like I haven’t thought about it... I don’t know. We do love dogs, but with Muku around...” She trailed off, the disappointment obvious in her tone. ”What about you, Mister Popular? Why don’t you take him home? Let’s be real, if you can handle Teddie, I’m pretty sure you could handle just about anything.” While the suggestion was somewhat serious, Chie wouldn’t be surprised if he dodged it like a bullet. No harm in trying, though... Or poking a little fun.

“I mean, would you look at that face! You can’t say no to that.” Chie leaned over, hands pressed to her knees to address the hound. “What do you say, doggy? You seem like a guy who knows his food! Souzai Daigaku sound good to you?” As if Yosuke needed confirmation. After all, ‘no’ had never been - and would likely never be - an answer when it involved food.

“Nothing, nothing.”

“Ch-Chie… Whatever you do. Don’t. Look. Behind you. There’s totally a ghost creeping out over there.”

"W-what’s with that face? Look, I know you’re joking! So you can stop trying to freak me out now--”

image

“...Y-Yosuke?” It’s tempting. That expression on his face made her itch for reassurance, to throw a cursory glance over a shoulder. But there’s no chance he’d be getting away with scaring her silly for a second time. "YOSUKE!” Driven by frustration, Chie opts for lunging forth to deliver a swift punch to his arm instead. “Snap out of it, you goof!”

-]– ;; “You’re sayin’ that as if I wanted to do that! You were practically a second from sending me to the next world!” Great. Who created midday spoke centers as if calling out a method of facing their fears? Already did it tempt regret to creep up his spine.

“Calm, collected! If we lose these sole weapons, we’re gonna come out of here as terrified noodles..”

“N-no way... No one’s making a noodle out of me!” Presses both hands together and draws them up at eye level. A moment of silence to compose herself, though it doesn’t appear to make a spot of difference.

“This was a terrible idea. I thought it wouldn’t be so bad, but now... Mmfff- I gotta get outta this creepy place!”

The apparent gratitude on her face was almost amusing. It was just a steak skewer after all – were people in this town so simple minded that they got that excited over steak? Sheesh. Talk about needing to get out more.

Regardless, Adachi kept his friendly demeanor. He even waved his free hand in front of him dismissively, laughing a bit nervously to himself to keep up appearances.

It’s really not a big deal. Really.

Image

“Don’t mention it.”  In all honesty these steak skewers were decent at best. Sure, it was probably the best one to get here in Inaba but man in other places this skewer wouldn’t even pale in comparison. Maybe Chie really did need to get out more, considering that many of the people who lived here seemed like they were stuck here. That must suck. Adachi really couldn’t imagine having to grow up in a place like this and stay here.

He watched as Chie wasted no time getting started on the steak skewer. This girl really loves her meat.

“Ah… I’m sure it was just a mistake. I think they thought I ordered two… Or… assumed that I did because they probably though Dojima-san was around too. Haha…” For some reason his hand sought the back of his neck for comfort when Chie called him lucky. “N-not really…. Still, it’s good to see a familiar face around that I could share it with.”

Image

He offered the other a smile. Although he had recognized her by her green jacket, Adachi had forgotten her name. Oops.

“S-sorry, what was your name again…?”

"Huh?” Being partners with Dojima made it seem like he’d be on good terms with the small family -and by extension- Yu. It made sense, since Adachi had no issues approaching the Investigation Team to engage in conversation. Although most of what he had to say was followed by apologies and a plea for them to pay no mind to his babbling. That aside, Chie and Adachi never spoke at all beyond the odd greeting. But she thought he might’ve at least known her name with it being such a small town.

Regardless, she didn’t take it to heart. Some people were forgetful, and to some extent, Chie could relate... But mostly only when it involved schoolwork and studying for exams. Hardly a fair comparison, she supposed. Instead, Chie could only quietly assume that this was the result of years of working on the force. Constantly being exposed to the hidden dangers that went unnoticed by the rest of them-- That had to leave a lot of room for the mind to wander and forget.

image

“Uhm, It’s Chie. Chie Satonaka.” She reminded, a small smile spread across her lips. “I’m friends with Yu-kun, remember?”
