I kind of love that D&D’s most iconic monster is this giant floating ball of eyes and teeth from a realm of inchoate madness beyond time and space that brings low entire kingdoms with its merest gaze, but rather than being unfathomably alien in its mentality, it’s just really racist. It’s like the game’s designers came up with the most Lovecraftian monster they could possibly imagine, then gave it the personality of the actual H P Lovecraft.

people with only passing knowlege of D&D might not be aware- yeah, one of the defining traits about beholders is they’re so xenophobic they are unable to form alliances with other beholders because theyre racist to each other to the point any beholder that does not look nearly identical to themselves is considered an inferior breed. and thats on top of seeing all non-beholders as vermin. and their problematic trait that if they dream about a beholder it physically creates the beholder they dreamed about so they typically create clones of people they hate they dont trust each other, they dont trust their own henchmen, they could easily turn entire continents into a pile of stone statues and ash but instead they primarily lurk in a cave alone wearing a tinfoil hat making elaborate doomsday prepper plans that go nowhere because their genius level intellect is primarily devoted to second guessing itself
