The older I get the more I sympathize with Bones in the first AOS film. 28 year old buddies, me and him.

mini-story-time. I had a dental cleaning. The hygienist was younger than me. Noticeably. And then i realized everyone in the office was. I think everyone who worked there was younger than me.

And I just can’t stop thinking about the whole fleet being drawn into an attack and you’re on the bridge with a 25 year old nut-job-genius in the captain’s chair and a half-Vulcan somewhere on the ship you need to figure out how to do a psych eval on mid-combat because Jesus he’s strong, a medbay you’ve left in the hands of a group that are all younger than you, because everyone else besides Jim and Bones is a bunch of what, 21/22 year olds? And you’re all trying to figure out what to do together, and a plan gets suggested, but the kid who comes up, he’s a baby and god, you have to ask-

And he says seventeen-

That mild panic in his voice is a new sound I could not hear until now.

This man is done and it’s everything because I am too 😂

And y’know why we’re done? Cuz these kids are smart.

Also, 28 is really damn young to be the CMO, especially on the Flagship, especially in the middle of a massive crisis.

And then to add onto that, somehow you are not only the senior medical officer, but the oldest senior officer on the bridge.

So he's not only panicking that everyone's younger than him, but that he's the only actual adult about! Because yeah, Jim's the Captain, but he's been Jim's responsible adult for years now... which makes him the responsible adult for the entire ship.

And 28 is far too young to be a Real Grownup

i'm thinking about the parallels in aos1 of "i might throw up on you" first being said when bones is mid-panic attack, practically hyperventilating over the idea of flying, vs it being said the second time by jim when bones is not only calm, but he's so fascinated by the view out the window that he tells jim to look at it too!

thinking about academy era mckirk bonding as jim tries to help bones get over his fear of flying, and that trip to the enterprise is the fruits of all that labor

The more despair I endure in life, the more I love Frodo. I'm just. I'm so glad that Tolkien wrote him like that. He was a hero and it broke him. He was given too much to carry. The circumstances were dire, everyone was doing the best they could, and Frodo tried so hard, for such a good cause, and he...broke. And the narrative has pity for him, the characters show him kindness. Even after victory, his hurts did not heal, and it isn't considered his fault. He must go to the undying lands, to seek out peace there. In universe, he is forgiven for being human - don't be pedantic - and his great torment is recognized. He fell. He could not have done it alone. He is still a hero.

And, I think that's important.
