Highlight’s Son Dongwoon has shared a sweet handwritten letter to say goodbye to fans before his upcoming military enlistment on May 9.

His letter reads as follows:

To: Light

Hello. This is Son Dongwoon. It’s been a while since I’ve written a handwritten letter. I’m not sure how I should start [this letter]. It’s already been almost 10 years since we’ve been together, and by the time you read this letter, I’m sure the absolute, momentary goodbye will have started. Each and every moment was enjoyable, and I was happy. There were countless good things, but it’s unfortunate that the feelings from those times, and the feelings from that air are slowly becoming blurred. However, when this time passes, I’m sure that new moments will be created. If you spend day after day with the memories we’ve had up until now, the day in which we meet again will come quickly.

Another thing that’s regrettable is that for the time being, I won’t be able to comfort you all, who laughed and cried and felt consoled after watching us and listening to our music, through new things. After returning, I’ll comfort you all a lot more. There’s still a lot of time left, but I’m laughing as I imagine joking around by saying things like, ‘Back in my days~ I heard the military is a lot easier now~’ in front of you all. Up until now, I was grateful (+ currently grateful) because you all were with me whether the wind was blowing or the warm sun was shining. I’ll continue to be thankful from now on as well. Take care, and I’ll see you soon.

Hello, this is Son Dongwoon, training soldier number nine in the twenty-third regiment, first education center, second company, first platoon, and first squad.

Today is Saturday, the third day since I enlisted. I took a picture after changing into the combat training uniform. By the time you see this letter, you probably all saw the picture. I am finding my own happiness and fun in this place. For example, in the fact that my favorite number nine became my training soldier number, the fact that I’m sleeping on the window side and not in the middle, and that I look forward to today’s menu. I realize once again that I am surrounded by these small bits of happiness. Although you may not have the happiness relating to Highlight for a short time, I hope you don’t miss the small bits of happiness you experience in your everyday life.

I have become the training platoon leader of the first platoon in the twenty-third regiment just like Yoseob hyung. I am the oldest out of everyone in our platoon. The other squad members are at least six and up to eight years younger than I am. They are trying hard to follow my lead, and I am trying hard to lead them well. Also, I am doing well because the squad leader and even the platoon leader are such great people. I think I’ll be able to complete this well. I will now conclude this letter as I have to go eat lunch. I will write again. Don’t catch a cold. Salute!

After sending the first letter (the first one was sent this morning) there were left some lingering feelings so, i guess ill send you this one as well. During the religious activity today, I met Gikwang hyung. We spoke for long time, thanks to nice squad leaders, and also talked about receiving the internet letter etc. I, also will receive everyone’s letters by next week, right?

There’s a lot of personal reorganization time so i wanted to read a book, but I can’t as i’m really sleepy. That’s why I feel that everyone’s letters will be a form of happiness to me. Ah! I will be thankful if you guys look at the photos uploaded of our trainings. I have a lot of favors to ask from everyone even when i’m in the army. I can’t ask for food so, i’m asking for letters!!

It’s time to sleep now ,but i’m writing this letter diligently. I will start training officially tomorrow. Here, there are a lot of things that make me smile widely and there are lot of things that give me happiness. I pray for everyone to have happy things in their lives everyday as well. I did the headcount and led for first time today. (platoon leader job) I think i was cool..

It’s confusing at things we do, everyone doing them almost the same, but there’s so many details.. I may have mentioned things, others have mentioned about before!! I’ll write a letter soon!!
