James Monroe’s Monument, Hollywood Cemetery, Richmind, VA
This gothic revival monument, nicknamed “the birdcage” was designed by architect Albert Lybrock in 1859. James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States between 1817 and 1825 and he died in 1831. Originally he was buried in New York where he died, but in 1858 a motion was passed to reinter him in Hollywood Cemetery. The architect, Albert Lybrock, was born in Germany but did most of his work in the antebellum building boom of the 1850s.
