Tony Gum Wins the Miami Beach 2017 PULSE PRIZE

PULSE Miami Beach is thrilled to announce Tony Gum as the winner of the 2017 PULSE PRIZE. This jury-awarded cash grant has been given directly to an artist of distinction exhibiting within a solo presentation booth at every edition of PULSE since 2006.

Represented by the South African-based Christopher Moller Gallery, Gum offers considered perspectives to the meta-narratives of an ever-changing world through the series of five large portraits shown in her booth. Aptly entitled ‘Ode to She’, the artist’s latest work explores, and encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a Xhosa woman, a human expression of 'womanhood'. “Through this work, I want to re-iterate the power and representation of each woman, acknowledging all the women I have encountered throughout my journey,” explains Gum. “I needed it to be a ‘poem’, a ‘song’, ‘a letter to she' … and I don’t mean ‘SHE’ in the gender confined or prescriptive sense. I speak of SHE, the Being, who understands HE/SHE to be a FORCE, like nature, a person who has been beaten, battered but is still able to rise.”

Gum was selected by a jury of expert curators that lead a strong force within the art world and beyond, including Lolita Cros, Independent Curator; Kathryn Mikesell, Founder of the Fountainhead Residency;Tommy Ralph Pace, Associate Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Roya Sachs, Curator of Lever House Art Collection and Artistic Director of Spring Place; and Piper Marshall, Curator and PhD student at Columbia University. “PULSE Art Fair’s commitment to presenting solo artist projects provides critical exposure for young and under-recognized artists. It was an honor to work with this year’s jury to select the 2017 PULSE PRIZE winner,” Pace stated. Mikesell continued, “I was very happy to see the tremendous diversity in the artists represented and the mediums in which they worked.” Marshall added, “PULSE continues to be a laboratory of ideas.”

PULSE PERSPECTIVES: CAROLINA GARCIA JAYARAM

PERSPECTIVES is a platform for the exploration of themes and issues within the contemporary art market. For the Miami Beach 2017 edition, PULSE partnered with the New York Film Academy in Miami Beach to present the PERSPECTIVES of three PULSE participants. In this installment, we the National YoungArts Foundation in Miami, FL and hear from its President and CEO, Carolina García Jayaram and the booth YoungArts will present at PULSE.

PULSE PERSPECTIVES: MINDY SOLOMON

PERSPECTIVES is a platform for the exploration of themes and issues within the contemporary art market. For the Miami Beach 2017 edition, PULSE partnered with the New York Film Academy in Miami Beach to present the PERSPECTIVES of three PULSE participants. In this installment, we visit Mindy Solomon Gallery and hear from Mindy herself, as well as Alejandro Contreras, an artist Mindy will show in her booth at PULSE Miami Beach 2017.

PERSPECTIVES is a platform for the exploration of themes and issues within the contemporary art market. For the Miami Beach 2017 edition, PULSE partnered with the New York Film Academy in Miami Beach to present the PERSPECTIVES of three PULSE participants. In this installment, we visit the studio of artist Donna Ruff, whose work will be presented by Rick Wester Fine Art at PULSE.

PROJECTS Special Commission Recipient Héctor Arce-Espasas

PULSE Miami Beach is pleased to announce Héctor Arce-Espasas as the recipient of this year's PROJECTS Special Commission. Visitors to the fair's South Tent will be greeted by Arce-Espasas’ sculptural installation Ode to Paradise (Dancers), a series of his iconic ceramics positioned within a new environment created specifically for PULSE. The ceramic vessels featured in Ode to Paradise (Dancers) are reminiscent of the overflowing fruit bowls popular in 17th century Europe, which served as symbols of wealth and social class. Here, ripe fruit and tropical imagery coalesce with the body to create a visual meditation on the idea of the tropical paradise, encouraging visitors to imagine new realities, or rather, new fantasies.

About Héctor Arce-Espasas Arce-Espasas was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1982. He received an MFA from Hunter College in 2011 and a BFA from SAIC in 2005. Arce-Espasas was nominated for the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Emerging Artist’s Grant, was a recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship, and has participated in residencies such as the ISCP Residency, the AIM Program at The Bronx Museum, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Residency. Arce-Espasas hosts D’marquesina, a New York based Latin party. 

Announcing the PULSE Miami Beach 2017 Exhibitors

\We are delighted to announce the exhibitors for the 13th edition of PULSE Miami Beach! The fair returns this December to its oceanfront home at Indian Beach Park, opening on Thursday, December 7 and closing on Sunday, December 10, 2017. PULSE will present over 70 galleries and 200 artists from around the world across its two spacious tents. By mixing returning galleries with new exhibitors from countries such as Peru, France, and The Netherlands, PULSE continues to provide a dynamic overview of the contemporary art being produced today.

We are thrilled to announce the works selected for PLAY Miami Beach 2017. Each of the nine works chosen by curators Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Pauline Jampol relates to this edition’s theme of POWER, a theme the curators chose to define in a broad sense, inviting artists to explore the multiple iterations of the word, it’s definitions, and the myriad of ways to interpret and contextualize power.

“By the time it reached its half-life, the year 2017 had witnessed the gamut of powerful events, powerful people, powerful movements, and powerful paradigm shifts. In feeling the impact of overwhelming examples of social, political, ecological, civil, economic, and even personal power (or lack thereof), we decided to address these moments through the PULSE PLAY program,” say curators Wahi and Jampol.

“The nine videos that we picked include works that contend with the stripping away of power through the lens of the oppressed or expose the dynamics of political dominance through the perspective of the spectator. Others intend to ameliorate the negative impacts of history, validate the power of personal achievement or emphasize the crippling impact of cultural power paradigms on the masses. Each of the videos selected are intended to illicit a visceral response and may be difficult to watch; a few may make you weep, gasp in shock, laugh with an unexplained sense of victory, or sigh with relief. It is our hope that this collection stirs you, and that you feel the full impact of our idea of power.”

The selected works will be shown at PULSE Miami Beach 2017 as well as in a pre-fair, month-long exhibition at Project For Empty Space. Join us in celebrating the artists at the opening at Project For Empty Space on Tuesday October 10 from 5pm - 7pm.

PLAY UPDATE: The Deadline For Submissions Is Extended Through September 5, 2017

At the request of the many artists seeking additional time to prepare work for PLAY, we have extended the deadline for submissions through Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The PULSE team and PLAY curators Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Pauline Jampol look forward to receiving your submissions. Works selected for PLAY will be exhibited onsite at PULSE Miami Beach 2017 and in a month-long exhibition in October at Project For Empty Space. PLAY is PULSE's dedicated showcase for video and new media, serving as a platform to encourage discovery within the digital realm. Announcing An Open Call For PLAY And The Return of Jasmine Wahi And Rebecca Pauline Jampol As Curators

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is thrilled to announce an open call for submissions for PLAY at Miami Beach 2017. PLAY is PULSE’s dedicated showcase for video and new media, serving as a platform at the fair to encourage discovery within the digital realm. Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Pauline Jampol, Co-Founders and Directors of Project For Empty Space, will return as this year's curators. In October, Wahi and Jampol will host a month-long collaborative exhibition at Project for Empty Space showcasing the 2017 PLAY selections. This exhibition underscores PULSE’s longstanding commitment to exploration both inside and beyond the fair setting, and creates an additional platform from which the selected works can be viewed.

As selected by the curators, the theme for PLAY 2017 is “POWER," wherein artists are invited to explore the multiple iterations of the word, and the myriad of ways to interpret and contextualize power. The curators have determined to use the following definition of power as a jumping point of inquiry into this complex topic;

Submissions for PLAY are now being accepted through Submittable. All submissions must include one video or new media piece running no longer than 15 minutes. Submissions should also include the artist’s bio and/or CV, an artwork statement, a supporting still of the submitted work, and the $50 application fee. All entries are due by August 2, 2017 and final selections will be announced in September. Selections will be shown onsite for the duration of PULSE Miami Beach 2017, in an exhibition in October at Project For Empty Space, and will enjoy additional promotion through PULSE's website and social media.

KATELIJNE DE BACKER APPOINTED NEW DIRECTOR OF PULSE ART FAIR

Join us in welcoming Katelijne De Backer to the PULSE team! After three and a half years at the helm of PULSE, Helen Toomer is resigning to focus on launching an artist residency in upstate New York and developing educational and arts related projects. Toomer will join the PULSE Advisory Committee who, along with the rest of the PULSE team, welcomes Katelijne De Backer as the new Director next month. 

"Joining the PULSE team and following in the footsteps of Helen Toomer as Director is a wonderful opportunity to further develop PULSE Miami Beach and the year-round program, PULSE360," says De Backer. "Connecting collectors with galleries at PULSE Miami Beach and engaging them in a larger conversation with a program that extends beyond the busy fair weeks, was a smart and innovative move Helen took. I look forward to using my extensive art fair and gallery experience to continue to improve and develop PULSE, and to working with the extraordinary exhibitors, many of them old friends." Katelijne De Backer was recently the Director of Art New York and Aqua Art Miami. Prior to that she served as Managing Director for top contemporary art gallery Lehmann Maupin, where she oversaw several teams with locations in New York's Chelsea neighborhood and the Lower East Side as well as in Hong Kong. She spent over a decade as the Executive Director of The Armory Show, where she was instrumental in transforming the bohemian-style fair of 75 galleries to a world-renowned exhibition of more than 200 galleries. De Backer and PULSE Contemporary Art Fair are looking forward to continuing the growth of PULSE360 and PULSE Miami Beach in the coming months. We are thrilled to announce the finalists for PLAY Miami Beach 2016, presented by guest curators Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Jampol. PLAY, a platform for the discovery of digital and new media works, will be exhibited onsite at PULSE Miami Beach from Thursday, December 1 through Sunday, December 4 and in a pre-fair collaborative exhibition at Gateway Project Spaces on October 26 from 6pm - 9pm. This Miami Beach iteration of PLAY marks the first time in PULSE’s twelve-year history the call for submissions was extended to the public. Curators Wahi and Jampol selected 10 video works, from the 800 submissions received, and in the process developed the thesis of "Body As..." investigating the human body's relationship to social constructs and self-determination.
