Not Yours | ONE SHOT ft. Kai
cnsarangkiseu asked: finish the scenario about kai showing mixed signals to you and then you confront him / angst? friendship?
Jongin put on his best puppy face as he reached from the other side of the restaurant table, yearning for the drink you had just ordered. You hadn’t even had a sip yet and there he was, wanting to be the first.
You were pretty sure that he had just ordered his own, so why was he taking yours?
“Mm. Fine. It’s not like you’ve got germs or whatever” You let him take a sip as you watched his lips touch the straw that was meant to be yours. Sigh.
It was Baekhyun’s girlfriend’s birthday and the entire group of guys and girls headed out for dinner. You had been friends with everyone for at least five years, with some, like Jongin, Tiffany and Taeyeon, who’ve you’ve known for almost ten.
If it were ten years ago, you would have probably melted into a pool of mush knowing that your first ever high school crush was sharing your drink with you. You would’ve almost fainted at the thought of an ‘indirect kiss’, as Jongin took a good long sip of your tall drink.
But this was ten years later, and rather than melting in your seat, you could only sigh to yourself from your seat away from Jongin, cringing at the thought of any possible germs that he could have lingering on your straw. You would’ve wiped it clean, but you didn’t want to be rude.
“Happy Birthday dear Taeyeooooon! Happy Birthday to you~”
With a single huff, Baekhyun’s girlfriend blew out the candles on her birthday cake that he had been brought to the dinner table at the restaurant. Gathering for a group photo, you quickly ducked out as you weren’t the photo type. Either you were taking the photo or you were no where to be found in them.
Escaping through the back of the restaurant where the restrooms were, to the back of the building where a couple of crates were sprawled, you sat upon them and shook off the feelings you were harbouring that night.
You didn’t understand why Jongin was so, well, affectionate towards you. For the longest time, the two of you were good friends in a great circle of people; why’d he have to do things that made everything just so complicated?
Apart from him taking a sip of your drink, Jongin spent the night making sure you always had your bowl of rice brimming with samgyupsal fresh from the grill. Even more, he suggested that the two of you shared a dessert.
Understandable if he was like this with Tiffany or with Seulgi. But he wasn’t. It was only to you and it didn’t make sense. He had a girlfriend, Krystal, who wasn’t as close to the group of friends. But regardless of that, just because she wasn’t there, it didn’t mean that he could send mixed signals- especially when you couldn’t understand them.
“Hiding from the cameras, huh?”
Jongin kicked one of the crates till it met the one you were seated on and joined you in the quiet alleyway. Why did he have to find you during the exact moment you were reeling in your thoughts about him?
“More like, hiding from you”
You were honest, and you had to be. You had to confront these weird emotions and feelings that you had attached to Jongin. Being friends with him wouldn’t work if it was always eating you up.
“Wait, what?” He chuckled before placing his hand on your right knee, “Ah, you’re funny, _____”
“No, Jongin. It’s you, who’s funny”
Except there was not a single tone in your voice that indicated that you found anything funny and he noticed that very fact. Realising the mood, Jongin withdrew his hand and tried to comprehend the situation.
“No, listen” You had to get your point across regardless of his confusion. “It’s funny how you’re dating Krystal but during this entire evening, you’ve done nothing but send me mixed signals. You take a sip of my drink, you cook my meat for me, you repeatedly nudged your leg with mine and you even wanted to share a patbingsu! Tell me, isn’t that funny?”
Realising your frustration, Jongin sighed before looking you straight in the eyes. He seemed apologetic.
“I want to say that I can explain it, but I can’t” He admitted, appearing crestfallen. “It’s just, something when I’m with you. Like, the feelings I never confessed, the feelings I never took action for all those years- they call come out at once when I see you. Like the missed opportunity is back again”
“You shouldn’t have those feelings”
Deep down inside, you were just the smallest fraction of a bit flattered that once upon a time, Jongin felt the same way that you once did about him. But at the same time, this was the present and that was the past- those feelings are worth nothing now.
“I know you love Krystal and you have to carry that with you everywhere- even when she’s not there, and even when you’re here with me.”
“I love Krystal, I do” Jongin raked his fingers through his hair before clearing his throat. He didn’t think that it would take that much effort to say the truth beneath it all.
“I’m not yours, Jongin. Never have, and well, it looks like I won’t ever be” You clutched onto your purse before rising from your seat on the crate, about to head back to the rest of your friends and the celebrations that you had momentarily left behind.
“Just like you were never mine”
